Currently enjoying: This house is haunted by John Boyne. This one is set in 1867 in a mansion and that atmosphere lends itself to romantic creepiness. And there are secrets and a ghost that is trying to kill Eliza. It’s a nicely eerie book.

Currently enjoying: Horns by Joe Hill. This book. This has such a unique premise. I would never want anyone to tell me all their truths and innermost thoughts. That would be scary and uncomfortable as hell. But it’s useful when you’re looking for a murderer.

Currently enjoying:Drawing Bloodby Poppy Z. Brite. I’ve reread this one a lot, because I like coming back to Missing Mile. I adore Trevor and Zach and love a good haunted house story, and this one is excellent.

The Dead Circle by Keith Varney

I was tricked into reading another zombie book. What’s the adage? “Trick me once, shame on you, trick me twice, shame on me for not giving zombie books a chance?”  I read The Dead Circle in 48 hours and spent the next week attempting to reconcile my inability to stomach cannibalism (yes, I went there) with my desire to share the best page-turners with my fellow bibliophiles.

Of all of the books that I’ve read about supernatural post-apocalyptic infestations, this book serves as the most practical guide to how my spouse and I could survive the apocalypse.  And perhaps that’s what makes it the most disturbing zombie selection: it could possibly be recategorized amidst “non-fiction” or “survival guides” sometime in the future.

Until now, I thought a layperson like myself would be among the first to fall in the zombie apocalypse, but this book gives me hope. So many times, the people that survive are strikingly attractive, never need to go to the bathroom, and are facile with a semi-automatic. I am none of these.

The Dead Circle is gruesome, quirky, familiar, and terrifying. Don’t eat while reading. That’s all I’m saying. Probably avoid drinking as well.

I’ll admit, there was a moment about two-thirds of the way through when I thought, Maybe it’d be better to turn into a zombie so I wouldn’t be eaten by one. That’s a truth I didn’t want face.

I’m not sure if Varney is planning a sequel, but based on the unconventional ending of the first, I’d pick it up tomorrow. In the meantime, I’ll keep this title on my nightstand in case I need some undead tips – and I plan on stocking up on bottled water tomorrow.

It Came From Beneath the Sink has a great title, a solid concept, and a unique monster. Unfortunately, it never managed to raise the stakes high enough for any of that to really matter. The characters are fine, the plot is technically fine, and it doesn’t rely on faulty villain logic to explain itself. Kudos to Stine for another great dog name; the cocker spaniel named Killer was a great touch. The book’s biggest crime is that it was boring. Stine had the opportunity here to get real weird and he didn’t take it. The Grool was gross and creepy, but it could have been way more powerful and menacing. I honestly think this concept had the potential to reach One Day at Horrorland orWelcome to Camp Nightmare levels of weird and fun, but it just kinda got stuck in the first act. It needed to do more than bring bad luck, or the bad luck needed to be way worse than it was. It Came From Beneath the Sink had all of the elements needed to make a greatGoosebumps book, but it ultimately fell short.

I first read Road to Nowhere when I was 10, and oh boy was I way too young to handle significant parts of this subject matter. I just remember seeing an awesome book cover on a classmate’s desk and seeking it out at the library. I was thrilled when I came across the (very minor) swearing. All of that context aside, this is a really good book and one of Christopher Pike’s best. It’s a bit of a slow mover, but the ending is more than worth it. I really liked all of the main characters, both the ones in the car and the ones in the stories they were telling. The “campfire” style of the narrative allowed for each story to take its time and resonate. There was also a really powerful message here aimed at the teenage target audience that I think was tastefully done. I appreciated that it wasn’t too heavy-handed with themes that could easily get sappy and sanctimonious. In total, Road to Nowhere scratched my nostalgic itch, turned out better than I had remembered, and made me want to dive even deeper into Christopher Pike’s twisted canon.

Score: 5

Yay, evil moons and horror! This is the book cover I made for the children’s illustrated horror novel No escuches a la luna (Don’t listen to the moon) by Marina Tena Tena, soon to be published by Literup. Only in Spanish so far, sorry. And yes, I’ll be making the illustrations (maniacal laughter).

“Horror’s not a symptom, it’s a love affair!”

I finished Stephen Graham Jones’ novel, “My Heart is a Chainsaw” about a week ago and I still have a lot of feelings about it. I like horror but I’ve never really enjoyed slashers and to read a slasher instead of watching one I think is what made this book so captivating. It’s dark, and beautiful, and heartbreaking. the main character, Jade, is one of a handful of main characters I’ve ever loved unapologetically in my life. Hot damn, Stephen Graham Jones just understood what it’s like to be weird, neurodivergent teen goth in a small town.
