k but there was NO reason for them to have that “into battle” line so serious, with the sombre music and all. like benedict definitely could have played sherlock as a ‘oh i’m so antisocial, ew people, can’t believe i’m going to have to go to a wedding’ type thing but he said the words with such gravity, such depth, a man making sacrifices for love, and they kept it while playing music you would play for someone going to their death.

I confess at first I didn’t realize he was asking me. When finally I understood, I expressed to him that I was both flattered and…surprised. I explained to him that I’d never expected this request and I was a little daunted in the face of it. I nonetheless promised I would do my very best to accomplish a task which was, for me, as demanding and difficult as any I had ever contemplated. Additionally, I thanked him for the trust he placed in me and indicated that I was, in some ways, very close to being…moved by it.
It later transpired that I’d said none of this out loud.

In the sign of three, while Sherlock tries to solve the problem in his mind palace with his version of Mycroft

we see a fine example of the Socratic method.

It is a form of cooperative argumentative dialogue between individuals, based on asking and answering questions to stimulate critical thinking and to draw out ideas and underlying presuppositions.

The Socratic method is a method of hypothesis elimination, in that better hypotheses are found by steadily identifying and eliminating those that lead to contradictions.

The Art of Socratic Questioning describes 3 types of questions that, when used strategically by the questioner, can aid students in regulating their own thoughts. These questions are categorized as those of procedure, preference, and judgement. It is in the third type of question,  where the Socratic definition of critical thinking can be found, as these types of questions are those with “best” answers.

Therefore, critical thinking within a Socratic paradigm might be described as the application and analysis of information requiring clarity, logical consistency, and self-regulation.

If as a teacher someone uses the Socratic method they don’t give a direct answer. They offer a new question instead of answer. They help students see that there is not one correct answer unless all other answers have been ruled out.

Interesting how in Sherlock’s mind, Mycroft is the teacher. He’s even in the podium of the amphitheatre, Or, 100% expected, tbh.
