#the simpsons
Quick post. I’m sad about last night’s Simpsons episode, which addressed the film The Problem With Apu in a weak, self-serving way. I won’t add to the pile of thinkpieces that came out today (The AV Club has a good one if you are curious), except to say: I think that as a TV show moves from being new and edgy to being very big, the dominant paradigm… its humor should soften. More views should be invited in; more seats should become available at the (writers’) table. The Simpsons had recently started to open up in new ways that I hadn’t thought possible, and it impressed me; now that progress has been undone. I’m a lifelong Simpsons fan and it feels terrible.
Which brings me to MASH! I’m struck anew by how the changes in that show reflected its own growth. It became softer, less of a boys’ club, kinder and more forgiving when it came to human relationships. After Vietnam ended it continued to address the inhumanity of war, in ever more conscientious ways. Eleven seasons is different from thirty seasons, but it’s still an enormous run—I find myself appreciating more than ever how good their choices were.
My brain seems to have decided that I’ve Got the Power would mash-up perfectly with It’s Peanut Butter Jelly Time, because I’ve been experiencing a nonstop loop, stuck in my head of:
It’s getting kinda hectic with a baseball bat!
Another earworm mashup, for all you parents out there:
Thomas – he’s the cheeky one!
James – he’s vain but lots of fun!
Lisa can philosophize
Bart’s adept at spinning lies….
