Ok so- epiphany.

Jyn’s being stupidly courageous by having some tea with Papa Erso up on this platform^^ when Cassian gets contacted by K2 with the knowledge that Alliance is sending in support. While his response is interesting (and as a RebelCaptain, heartwarming) what makes me intrigued the most is this:

Cassian says to K2:

“No, no, no—tell them to hold up! Jyn’s on that platform!”

What K2 says to Alliance:

“Captain Andor requesting a delay on squadron support. Alliance forces onsite. Please confirm.”

Ok, ok, it might just be the difference because of protocol. (No names over unsecured channels) However, K2 doesn’t like Jyn. It’s not like he really cares to save her.

My theory: K2 is covering for Cassian. First off, had Cassian had a straight line to the Alliance, his comment would have been exactly what he said to K2. That wouldn’t have mattered to Draven if Jyn was alive or atomized. So by calling her ‘Alliance forces’ he’s protecting both Cassian’s reputation and assuaging any guilt that the Captain might be feeling over his latest assassination ( remember, K would assume that Cassian would have gone through with it.)

Anyway that’s just something my benedryl-addled brain came up with. No guaranteeing that it makes any sense. If you have anything that proves/disproves my thoughts, let me know!

So tldr: K2 is Cassian’s bff. K2 is best bff a lonely pitiful distraught gray character could ask for.

“Jyn had turned to him from the control panel looking like the last survivor of a war, and she’d smiled in a way he’d never seen before. It hadn’t been a smile predicated on anticipation or courage, or one touched by sadness or doubt; just a smile so ordinary it seemed to change Jyn from a hero out of myth into a woman he might have known and understood. He hadn’t known her, didn’t know her, of course. There wasn’t the time.” - Alexander Freed, Rogue One: A Star Wars Story.

[x]Trust Goes Both Ways

So apparently I fractured my ankle yesterday. I can’t get into the orthopedist for at least 2 days (thanks to the weekend).

What a lovely start to the holiday season.

At least I’ve got enforced time on my butt to write and maybe get my RCNSS gift finished early.

Hello,@youkailuvr! I’m your secret santa, a lot more than fashionably late with the first half of your gift, I’m so sorry! I had an unexpectedly hard time getting back into the swing of in-universe fic, but I hope you’ll like it anyway! Expect the other half within the next week, I’ll try to make it soon :) Happy new year!

Cold Comfort

Bad timing. That was what it came down to, she thought, tapping her fingers gently on the edge of the console and staring through the shuttle’s front window without really seeing anything. It was just really shit timing –

Not that time had everbeen on her side, neither generally nor where Cassian was concerned –

No, that wasn’t fair. Time had been on their side when it counted. It had got them off Scarif in one piece. All those other times, those painful little missed opportunities, interrupted conversations, not working up the nerve to say something in time… maybe those were just the price they paid for that one stroke of luck.

Still, there was no denying that after all this time – almost a year – they had picked the worst possible moment to finally take a step. Bodhi had always theorised that only a life-threatening amount of alcohol could ever get Cassian to respond to Jyn’s needling (nobody in their right mind could call it flirting, and she certainly wasn’t going to) with anything more than a lingering look, or to get Jyn to make herself vulnerable enough to step through one of the doors that he left ever so slightly ajar for her. Solo had offered “help” more than once, usually some variant of offering to shut them both into a supply closet for a few hours, until Jyn had detailed which body parts she would relieve him of the next time he made these suggestions. He was one to talk, really – and besides, even an insensitive nerf herder like Solo couldn’t possibly think it would be thateasy. If all they were after was a quick fuck on a dirty storage crate, they’d have got the whole thing over with a long time ago. She was determined and resourceful, and Cassian was ten times the strategical thinker Solo was. It was downright insultingto suggest they couldn’t have worked out the logistics of a one-night-stand for a whole year.

RebelCaptain Secret Santa 2021

Hi@sadieandor! I’m your RebelCaptain Network Secret Santa!

I sincerely hope you like this - it ended up being different than I had planned in my head, but I think it still works. It’s titled Not Exactlyand is also posted on AO3.

The summary is below; full fic below the cut.

*****

Jyn looked up, into Cassian’s eyes, and oh…he was close, awfully close. As in, he was close enough for her to count his eyelashes, beautiful things they were. They hadn’t been this close since…well, since the elevator ride on Scarif.

He leaned his head down toward her as she leaned forward slightly…they really didn’t need to move much. Jyn closed her eyes. Tilted her head, just a little….

Cassian knocked on the door to Draven’s temporary office aboard the current Rebellion flagship.

“Enter,” came the commander’s voice and the door slid open, allowing Cassian to step inside.

“You wanted to see me, sir?”

Draven looked up from where he was reviewing reports on data pads and handed on to Cassian.

“Yes, I have your next assignment.  There’s some concern about another intel agent – Tristan Hollis.  He was sent undercover with a group on Joralla, but has missed his last several check-ins.  The group and their leader, a man named Sacker, claim to be against the Empire, but recent reports about their movements have us concerned.  I want you to go check it out.”

Cassian glanced at the data pad.  “A missing agent, sir?  If I may ask, why choose me for this?”

Draven stood.  “To be frank, I want to be sure you’re field ready after Scarif.  And I’m not sending you alone – Erso will be joining you.”

Cassian blinked.  “Jyn?”

“She’s the only Erso we have, so yes.  If she is to stay, we need to figure out where to place her.  Ready your supplies and you’ll set off in the morning.”

“Yes, sir,” Cassian said, before turning and leaving the commander’s office.

Planet Joralla, mid-morning

“So, we’re just checking on this Hollis?  And this group?  To see what they’re really doing?”

Cassian turned to Jyn as they walked out of the shuttle.  “Exactly.  Draven thinks it will be a good measure of my recovery.”

Jyn shifted the strap of the pack she was carrying and looked at their surroundings.  The tiny shuttle they had taken would be well hidden among a dense patch of trees, but their way forward would be through a fair bit of hills and hardwood trees.

The day was mild, but the briefing had noted the planet’s predisposition towards sudden weather changes; their waterproof packs held a few essential supplies – thermal blankets, rations, a med kit, and the like.  Luckily, the planet wasn’t home to any large animal predators; according to the briefing, the native fauna consisted largely of avian and insect species.

“And we’re supposed to be…journalists?  If this group is like it sounded in the brief, I doubt they’ll take kindly to that.”

Cassian nodded his agreement, adjusting the strap of his own pack as he answered.  “They may not, but it’s a start.  If not, we’ll improvise.  The rumors of their true intentions are too dangerous to ignore.”

After another ten minutes of walking, they came upon the first set of bent branches – the sort left behind by brush speeders – and the tracks became more numerous as they kept following.

After a time, they heard the tell-tale whine of an approaching speeder and stopped walking, ducking behind a large nearby tree.  The speeder zipped past them and turned, slowing down as it made a return pass.  Three men in military fatigues stood near the controls.

“You there!  Come out where we can see you!”

Cassian and Jyn exchanged glances before stepping out on opposite sides of their tree, hands held in front of them.

The same man who had spoken addressed them again.  “Why are you here?”

Cassian stepped forward.  The other two men immediately drew their weapons and aimed.  Cassian’s face held no trace of the soldier underneath, only bland geniality.

“Ah, myself and my partner here,” he said, indicating Jyn with a tilt of his head, “We’re reporters with the Uprising – a new, underground periodical dedicated to connecting those who do not agree with the Empire’s ways.  We’ve heard of your work and we wanted to meet you, maybe do a piece on your group for our premiere issue.”

The first man spoke again.  “Your names?”

“I am Casimiro and she is Lia.  If we could just meet with whomever is in charge, we could further explain.”

The first man looked them over once more before motioning to the other two.  “Take them.  Sacker can decide what to do with them.”

The other two soldiers jumped down off the speeder; Cassian and Jyn did not resist as they were forced on to the speeder.  One of the soldiers caught Cassian’s eye.

“It’s a great day out, isn’t it?” Cassian asked, bringing Jyn’s attention to him and the soldier.  The soldier was none other than Hollis, the agent they had been sent to find.

Hollis didn’t respond, merely shoved Cassian a little further onto the speeder.

“No small talk?  Oh well,” Cassian shrugged, bracing himself to keep steady as the speeder took off.

~RC~RC~

Planet Joralla, mid-day

After nearly an hour spent in complete silence, the speeder finally reached a small group of buildings that resembled a mid-sized military base, though many generations out of date.  Cassian and Jyn were forced off the speeder and marched into the biggest building in sight, situated on one side of a large open area between several buildings.  The moment the door opened, they came face-to-face with an unassuming human male, seated behind an old wooden desk.

“Mister Sacker, sir,” said the man who had spoken with Cassian, “These two were in the woods.  They say they’re journalists, want to do an article or something on us.”

The man at the desk – Sacker – looked up from his papers.  “Journalists?  With what publication?”

Cassian spoke.  “If I may, we’re with a new periodical – Uprising.  We wanted to start off with a bang, and what better place to start than with you and your group.  We’ve heard great things –”

“I don’t believe you,” Sacker interrupted, “There is no such publication.”

Jyn tried this time.  “As my partner said, we are a new –”

“Enough,” Sacker said, interrupting again.  He motioned to the soldiers behind Cassian and Jyn.  “Search them and place them in holding until I decide what to do with them.”

~RC~RC~

Five minutes later, Jyn and Cassian had been pushed into another building, stripped of their packs and jackets, then placed in a holding cell behind an old, metal-barred door.

“Well, that was…not unexpected,” Jyn deadpanned, leaning on her forearms against one of the crossbars in the cell door.  “That was Hollis, wasn’t it?”

Cassian nodded, coming to stand next to her.  “I’m sure of it, but he didn’t respond to the recognition phrase, so I don’t know what’s wrong.  He may be too embedded.  Or maybe his just forgot the phrases.”

Jyn leaned forward as far as she could, trying to look at the door lock.  “This thing’s ancient; no electronics to it at all.  My picks will be too flimsy for it; do you have anything stronger?”

Cassian opened his mouth to respond, but the outer door of the building opened.  He and Jyn jumped back from the cell door and watched as Hollis stepped through.  The undercover agent strode quickly to the cell.

“What’s the big idea?” he hissed, keeping his voice low.  “Why’d they send another agent after me?”

Cassian’s voice was carefully modulated as he replied.  “We were sent to check on you; you’ve missed several check-ins and we’ve gotten word that some of the things this group is planning aren’t exactly anti-Empire.”

Hollis rolled his eyes.  “I haven’t hit my check-ins because I’ve been too busy making myself invaluable to Sacker and the others.  There’s something big going down, and soon, but I haven’t been able to completely figure out what it is.  All I know is that Sacker’s stock-piling weaponry.  Big stuff, too – even a couple of turbo-lasers.  Enough to take down ships in orbit from here on the ground.”

“Can you get us out of here?” Cassian asked.  Hollis shook his head.

“Sorry, I can’t.  Not right now, anyway.  It’d be too suspicious if you were to be released right after I spoke to you.  I can try later, maybe.”

Faint shouts could be heard outside the building.  “That’s my cue,” said Hollis, “I gotta go.”

“Wait,” Cassian started, but Hollis was already out of the door.  He slammed his fist against one of the cell door bars.  “Damn it.”

Jyn looked down, as disappointed as Cassian was, and froze.  “Cassian,” she said, nudging him with her elbow before pointing to the ground near where Hollis had been standing.  “Look.”

There, on the ground, was a single folding multitool.

~RC~RC~

An hour later, however, and the slim glimmer of a chance the tool had provided was becoming more of a frustration.  The tool was just out of their reach – mere inches away.  A search of their cell for anything to extend their reach had shown nothing but a simple cot with a wooden stand and thin blanket.

Jyn sat back down on the cot, letting Cassian futilely try to reach just that tiny bit farther.  As she sat, the stand creaked.  Standing, she lifted the thin pallet that comprised the bedding of the cot.  Underneath were thin wooden support slats, held in place with small pieces of rope.  Jyn glanced between the slats and the blanket and back again, an idea forming.

Moments later, Jyn had one of the wooden slats broken free and a torn strip of material from the blanket.  She tied one end of the fabric strip to the slat and walked the few steps over to Cassian.  “Here, try this,” she said.

With a few swings of the makeshift tool, Cassian was able to snag the multitool and drag it close enough for him to grab.

“Yes!” he said, smiling back at Jyn, “Now, we’re out of here.”

The multitool attachments were strong enough to let them pick the lock on the cell door.  Carefully, they eased open the outer door.  Cassian peaked his head out.  “Coast is clear – let’s go.”

They dashed out of the building and headed for a speeder parked on the other side of the open area.  Just as Jyn jumped inside, they heard running footsteps coming their way.  Cassian, not quite inside the speeder yet, changed direction and dove under the speeder to reach cover the other side; Jyn ducked down onto the floor of the speeder.

“Sacker, sir,” they heard a man call, “Those reporters – they’re gone!”

“I knew it!” Sacker replied, his voice filled with satisfaction at being proven right, “Find them and bring them to me!”

Jyn eased herself up enough to quickly peer over the side of the speeder.  She had enough time to see that she and Cassian were out-numbered at least five to one before she ducked back down.  As she looked around the speeder, she saw that she was right next to a control panel.  She eased off the cover and grinned.

The soldiers all startled in surprise as the speeder roared to life.  They turned just in time to see Cassian jump into the speeder before Jyn threw the speeder into high gear and took off, leaving a cloud of dust in their wake.

The momentary elation at having escaped and speeding away from their captors faded quickly as said captors gave chase in speeders of their own and had no qualms about firing weapons at them.

Moments later, one of the soldiers landed a lucky shot and hit the propulsion drive of the speeder.  Cassian and Jyn jumped free of the speeder just before it crashed at the top of a hill above a small river.  They tumbled down the incline before landing in the water.

Their pursuers caught up to them before they could recover.

~RC~RC~

Planet Joralla, dusk

A short time later, Jyn and Cassian found themselves back in their cell, this time with river-soaked clothes and their hands bound behind their backs.  Jyn sank down on the cot.

“Well, that went well.”

Cassian huffed in agreement.  “Are you hurt?”

“A few bruises,” Jyn answered.  “Landed on my left knee harder than I meant to.  You?”

He shook his head.  “A couple scrapes, nothing more.”

“Well, it seems to me that we aren’t getti–"

Jyn was interrupted by the outer door opening as Hollis stepped through.  With a quick glance behind him, the undercover agent closed the door before coming to stand in front of their cell.

“I finally figured out what Sacker’s up to.  Somehow, he got a hold of the current flight plan for the flagship.  Or, at least, he thinks he has it – I’m not up to date on the fleet’s movements.  Anyway, he plans to use those lasers to take down the flagship as it passes by us.  I don’t know if he’s truly an Imp or not, but either way, he’s not on our side.”

Cassian and Jyn exchanged looks.  “The fleet did have plans to come near here, though that may not still be the plan.  Do you know when?” Cassian asked.

Hollis shook his head.  “No, I hadn’t found that yet.  And besides, we don’t have time.  Sacker wants you two gone.  He–”

This time, Hollis was interrupted by the door opening.  Sacker entered with four men behind him.  He raised one eyebrow at Hollis.

“Hollis?  What are you doing here?”

Hollis snapped to attention.  “Sacker, sir.  Since these two have already escaped once, I figured it couldn’t hurt to come keep an eye on them.”

Sacker seemed to consider that for a moment before speaking again.  “Thank you for your initiative, Hollis.  These two are trouble.  And I don’t like trouble in my camp.”  He gestured to the men flanking him.

“Take them.”

Cassian and Jyn were pulled out of their cell, then hustled onto the back of a large speeder truck with a cabin in front for the waiting driver and a large empty cargo bed behind.  Their hands were momentarily uncuffed from behind them, but quickly bound again, this time to each other – Cassian’s left hand to Jyn’s right and their free hands to a support beam on the back of the cabin.  The cuffs were metal and purely mechanical, much like the lock on the cell door.

Sacker stood below them and looked up as Hollis walked around and got into the passenger seat.  “I’m sorry, but I can’t have anyone sniffing around where they shouldn’t be.”  He turned to the driver.  “Take them into the woods and get rid of them.”

~RC~RC~

The speeder zipped along in the fading light.  Jyn leaned toward Cassian.

“I don’t suppose you still have that multitool, do you?”

He shook his head grimly.  “No – lost it in the crash.“

“Kriff.”

Cassian opened his mouth to agree, but the speeder suddenly jolted and stopped with a jerk, knocking both of them to their knees.  They heard the sounds of a scuffle inside the cabin before Hollis opened his door and stepped out.  The other agent jumped in the back of the speeder beside them.

“Dammit,” he cursed, “I don’t have the key to these cuffs.”

Jyn pulled on her left hand, testing the cuff’s connection to the support.  The support held, as it did for Cassian when he pulled on his right.

“I have an idea,” Cassian said, looking at Hollis.  “Hand me your blaster.”

Hollis did so and, with two quick blasts, Cassian had himself and Jyn free from their connection to the cabin.  When he tried to use the same method to separate the two of them, however, the blaster sputtered and died.

Cassian cursed under his breath and handed the weapon back to Hollis.  “Do you have another?”

Hollis shook his head.  “Look, Sacker definitely wants you dead.  I can give you a chance to get back to your ship – I assume you have a ship?”

At Jyn’s nod, he continued.

“I’ll let you go here, then return to Sacker – I’ll say you broke free and knocked out both me and the other guy.  It won’t be much of a head start, but it’s better than nothing.”

Cassian and Jyn exchanged looks again, silently agreeing to the fact that this was the best they had.

“You’ll have to be convincing,” said Jyn, before punching Hollis solidly in the jaw.  Hollis reeled back, holding a hand to his reddening jaw.

“Not bad,” he said.  “Now go!”

They wasted no time in jumping down off the speeder and taking off into the woods.

~RC~RC~

Planet Joralla, thirty minutes after night fall.

Jyn and Cassian dashed quickly through the forest, trying to cover as much ground as they could for as long as they had light to see by.  As best as they could determine before they lost all daylight, Hollis had set them free on the opposite side of the group’s camp from where they had left the shuttle.

This meant that they would have to go either straight back and through the camp – which wouldn’t work for obvious reasons – or take a much longer route and circumvent the camp.

The weather had turned yet again; the air temperature had dropped significantly, and they could soon see their own breaths.  That, combined with their still wet clothes and Jyn’s aching knee, meant that they had to find shelter, and soon.

Unfortunately, the ground was not cooperating.  Around them were trees, all with branches too high to be considered for cover.  All the debris under the trees offered plenty of fuel for a fire, but they didn’t dare risk one, for fear of the smoke attracting attention.

As they came to a stop at the edge of a clearing, Jyn turned to Cassian.  “We need to find somewhere to rest.  It’s too cold and dark to keep going much longer.”

Cassian nodded.  “Agreed.  Let’s go a little farther, first.”

Cassian’s desire to go farther proved fruitful, as they came across a depression under a tree that would do for a makeshift cubby for them to rest in.  Standing over it, Jyn raised an eyebrow at Cassian.  “It’ll be a little snug.”

He shrugged.  “Better than out in the open.  Let’s gather some of these fallen leaves; we can add them to what’s already here and use them as insulation.”

With a few fumbles – they were still tied together – they scraped some of the nearby branches and fallen debris up to the edge of the depression.  Cassian grinned at Jyn.  “Ladies first?”

Jyn rolled her eyes, but stepped down first anyway.  Cassian stepped down behind her and they eased down to settle in the hollow.  They lay side-by-side and used their free arms to drag their gathered debris on top of themselves.

Jyn looked up at Cassian.  “Okay?”

“Yeah,” Cassian said, “We can rest for a few hours, alternate watches.  We’ll head out back to the shuttle at first light.”

Jyn nodded, then shivered.  The temperature just kept dropping and their blanket of leaves, while better than nothing, provided only minimal warmth when combined with their already damp clothes.

“Cold?” Cassian asked, looking down at Jyn.  “Here – I have an idea.”

He lifted their bound hands up and over Jyn’s head, so her right arm laid across her torso and his left arm was around her shoulders.  He pulled her close.  “There, we can use our body heat to help keep warm.”

Jyn nodded her head against where it lay on his shoulder.  “This works,” she said, her voice soft.

They lay in silence for a few moments before Cassian shifted.  “Are you okay?” Jyn asked, lifting herself off of him as much as she could.

“A rock, I think,” he winced, “I must have laid on one – it’s digging into my back.”

Jyn reached down with her free left arm and pushed herself up a little further as Cassian started to move himself over enough to avoid the offending stone.

“Is that enough room?”

“I think, yeah, just move a little to the right.”

“Okay, like this?”  Jyn pushed against the side of their hollow more with her left hand.

“Yeah, that works.  Just one more second….”

As Cassian eased himself back down, Jyn’s left hand slipped, sending her crashing down on top of Cassian.  He let out a little huff of air as she landed.

Jyn looked up, into Cassian’s eyes, and oh…he was close, awfullyclose.

Tilted her head, just a little.

.

.

.

The call of some nocturnal bird pierced the night, breaking the moment.

Cassian cleared his throat.  “Well, yes, as I was saying, this position is good.  No rocks over here.  Why don’t you rest now?  I’ll take first watch.”

Jyn swallowed and nodded.  “Yes.  Wake me when you need to sleep.”

She settled back down next to him with her head on his shoulder.  Somehow, she didn’t think she’d be getting much sleep.

~RC~RC~

Planet Joralla, just before daybreak

The increasing whine of a speeder woke Jyn from her doze.  She nudged Cassian.  His eyes snapped open.  Without a word, they eased up from their hollow.  The temperature difference was striking; their little nest, while it couldn’t be considered truly warm, had definitely done it’s job of insulating them from the worse of the overnight cold.

As they took their first shivering steps out of the hollow, Jyn’s injured knee buckled and she stumbled.  Cassian gripped her elbow to steady her.  “Are you alright?” he asked, voice pitched low enough that only she could hear him.

She nodded and responded in kind.  “I’ll have to be.  Let’s go before they get any closer.”

Cassian slipped his arm around her waist and they continued on their path from the previous night.

Within ten minutes, the leading edge of the planet’s sun was visible on the horizon, giving Jyn and Cassian a better idea of the direction they needed to go.

That light, however, also helped the searching speeders, and the sounds of their engines grew closer and closer.  After a few more moments, it became clear that they wouldn’t escape their pursuers on foot.  Cassian stopped near a good-sized tree trunk – just large enough for one person to hide behind.

“I have an idea,” he said.

~RC~RC~

The oncoming brush speeder bike slowed to a stop in front of their tree.  The single driver had obviously seen Cassian – he had hardly made himself difficult to see, standing beside the tree.

The driver spoke harshly as he jumped off his speeder.  “You there!  Don’t move!”

Cassian held his ground as the driver stepped directly in front of him.

“Where’s the other one?”

Cassian pointed behind the man with his free right hand.  “Right there.”

The soldier turned in confusion just in time for the rock in Jyn’s hand to catch him under the chin and he collapsed in a heap to the forest floor.

“Good job,” Cassian said, dropping to a knee beside the fallen man as Jyn limped back around the tree to his side.  He held up the man’s blaster.  “Want that chain gone?”

Less than a minute later, their connected hands were freed from their chains and Jyn sat behind Cassian on their newly acquired speeder.

“We’ll have to double back.  Sacker’s information wasn’t entirely wrong.  There was a plan to pass by here at one point.  The route has since been changed, but we can’t let him keep those weapons.  If we can find out how he knew in the first place, that would be even better.”

Jyn nodded and Cassian kicked the speeder into gear.

~RC~RC~

They ditched the speeder in a brush pile on the outer edge of the camp and proceeded inside, ducking between buildings as they went.  It was eerily silent compared to the bustle of earlier.

“I don’t like this,” Jyn whispered.

“Agreed.”

“Wait – look there.”  Jyn pointed to a lump of rags laying outside one of the buildings.

They crept over to the pile, which turned out to be not rags at all, but the beaten and broken body of Hollis.  Cassian grimaced when they turned him over to see the man’s bloody face.

“Kriff…Sacker must’ve found out, but where is he?”

Jyn looked around, noticing a nearby door, slightly ajar.  She brought it to Cassian’s attention; he nodded.  They quickly made their way to the door and pushed it open, covering each other.  No one was there, however, only a desk covered in papers and a map flickering on the wall.

Cassian went straight for the papers while Jyn made her way over to the map.

“This is what we needed.  Sacker is definitely on the Empire’s side,” said Cassian, tucking the most important bits inside his shirt.  “But where is he?”

“Cassian,” Jyn called.  “Look here.”

He turned to join her at the map.  “These hills here,” she said, pointing at a grouping of five marks on the right side of the map, “They’re all marked with cross-marks.”  She pointed to another, single circle around yet another hill.  “But this one, it’s a circle.  Could that be where he is?”

Cassian shrugged.  “It’s the best lead we’ve got.  Come on.”

They quickly and quietly returned to their speeder.  Moments later, they were parking it again near the hill that had been circled on the map.  Cassian drew his blaster before sliding off the seat.  Jyn followed close behind.

When they had reached the base of the hill, they spotted a large laser cannon sitting at it’s top.  Sacker stood next to it, adjusting the angle of the firing barrel.  Cassian and Jyn exchanged glances before he broke away and crept up the hill.

A single well-aimed shot from Cassian’s blaster dropped Sacker like a bag of rocks.  Another well placed shot destroyed the control panel of the cannon, sending out a burst of sparks.

Cassian returned to Jyn’s side.  “We have the intel he had.  Sacker’s gone and there’s nothing more we can do for Hollis.  Let’s go.  Draven can decide if we’re to take out the rest of this group.”

A half-hour later, Cassian was helping Jyn up the ramp into their shuttle.  Her knee had started to swell in the time it had taken them to make their way back and it was growing difficult to walk on.  With his help, Jyn settled herself in the miniscule cargo area in back of the shuttle while Cassian completely the take-off procedures.

Once he made the jump to hyperspeed and set the autopilot, Cassian returned to her side with a small bacta bandage in hand.  “We’ll rendezvous with the nearest medic ship in about twenty minutes or so, but we can put this on your knee in the meantime.”

~RC~RC~

Rebellion Medic Ship

A few hours and a bacta treatment later on the medic ship, Jyn’s leg felt much better.  The only thing that she wanted to do right now, however, is eat, shower, and take a nap.  She left the medbay, intent on finding a set of unused quarters to do all that in, and ran into Cassian as he walked around the corner.

Cassian instinctively caught and steadied her.  “Are you feeling better?”

“Definitely,” she responded.  “Now all I want to do is sleep.  Do you know which quarters we’ve been assigned here?”

He nodded.  “I’ll show you the way,” he offered.

Soon enough, they were at the door of a small room – a bunk, a desk, and an even smaller privy.

“I’ll leave you to it, then,” Cassian said, “I need to go finish the preliminary report for Draven.”

“Okay,” Jyn said, and made to step inside the room.

“Jyn?”

She turned back to face Cassian, still standing next to her.

“About last night…it was just two cold people, seeking a little warmth, right?”

Jyn thought for a moment.  She leaned close, nearly as close as they had been last night, and smirked slightly.

“Not exactly,” she said before abruptly turning on her heel and closing the door to her room.

Cassian stood in stunned silence for a moment.  Then he smiled to himself and left her door, heading for his own, two doors down.

That would not be going in his report, he mused.  There were some things that even Draven didn’t need to know.
