thinking about that hc about how Mirabel and Camilo were once called the “twins” by the villagers because they were not only inseparable as little kids but also closest in age, and Camilo would often shapeshift into Mirabel after getting his gift.
But what if they’re no longer as close because when Mirabel didn’t get a gift, she was so distraught for months that when Camilo attempted to cheer her up by shapeshifting into her, she cried and lashed out at him instead, having assumed he was mocking her. both were so hurt that Camilo never shapeshifted into her again and they stopped calling themselves the twins. eventually the villagers stopped calling them that too.
while they didn’t actively avoid each other, they grew distant and didn’t address that night ever again. Mirabel began to grow close to Dolores over the years, with Camilo and her only really conversing when around their other family members. then his baby bro was born and Mirabel grew even closer to Antonio. Camilo wasn’t very jealous or angry at all, but it stung. He saw her every day yet still missed his favorite cousin; missed being “twins” and was still unsure how to approach her on his own without a silly joke she typically ignored or shrugged off. but now that she’s brought their tío Bruno back to the family, maybe it’s time for them both to genuinely reach out and make some amends of their own?
