Castiel had built stars by hand, put them in their places and created constellations, dusted the galaxy with cosmic fire of every color. He’d watched trickles and streams grow and burst into great, sweeping oceans. He’d seen saplings born into a teeming nursery and witnessed as they grew over hundreds of years into mighty giants, the centers of their world, giving life and homes to all sorts of living things.
And yet for the first time in his existence, he found himself lost in a natural beauty, without hold on himself. He stared, lost, into deep green eyes, shining with defiance and a trembling hope. Somehow, hope.
It caught him by surprise the first time. And the second. Third, fourth, fifth. Maybe he’d never get used to this feeling, terrifying and wonderful.
Castiel had held Dean Winchester’s soul and felt awe at something other than God.
