Up until this point pretty much all of my exams have been in English. My Spanish got a bit rusty and it concerns me a little.
Three words that Polish borrowed from Spanish for some reason:
- bailando (dancing) -> bailando/bajlando - in Polish slang this means “a party”
- mañana (tomorrow/morning) -> odwalać manianę - to do dumb things, to be irresponsible/lazy (I guess it makes sense when talking about laziness because you always want to do stuff “tomorrow”)
- cojones (balls) -> mieć cojones - to have balls (we have our own way of saying that, so I have no clue why this happened)
See, the thing about subtitles is that you don’t necessarily have to read really fast to catch everything. There are actual limitations imposed on the translators. No matter what happens, they can’t exceed a certain number of characters per second and characters per line (dots, commas and spaces also count as characters). Everything is calculated so that the majority of the viewers can keep up without getting distracted by the text. If a subtitle is displayed for too long, people have the tendency to come back and reread it and translators also have to take that into account. So if you don’t have any conditions affecting your attention span or the ability to focus on reading and watching at the same time, you should be fine. Even if you don’t read regularly. For Polish, the average speed of reading is 15 characters/second, but during my classes we try to make it 12 c/s whenever we can just to be sure.
