“But NORMAL People’s Bodies Didn’t Look Like That!” …right?

Some of you may have seen my post about Baroque artists and their realistic depictions of human bodies as having skin and fat.

I’ve had a lot of negative and frankly fatphobic comments on that post, calling the people in the paintings “fat” and “obese,” mostly along the lines of this:

“It’s because the artists are depicting rich people, who were fat and lazy. Normal people didn’t look like that!”

The idea, of course, is that these artists wouldn’t have ever drawn bodies that looked like those in the Baroque paintings, if they weren’t painting super-rich people that stuffed themselves with food all day.

Supposedly. We’ll see how well that holds up.

Today I was in the library looking at a collection of drawings by Albrecht Dürer, and learned that in the early 1500’s, Dürer tried to put together essentially a “how-to-draw” book, showing how to draw people. His work was controversial, because of his technique of “constructing” figures using rules about proportions. (A quick and easy method of inventing realistically proportioned bodies out of thin air? Cheating!!)

However, in his “constructed” drawings, Dürer had to figure out how to handle the range of variety in bodies, and ended up breaking down how to create a variety of body types in correct proportions.

I’m showing the women, to contrast with the post on Baroque paintings. Here are some of his drawings that I thought y'all should take a look at.

These are a couple of his more “average” women—the one on the left is from his drawing book, and the one on the right is one of his drawings.

Here’s a “strong woman” and “A very strong, stout woman”

This is what he refers to as a “stout woman.”

Here’s where it gets interesting: this is what Albrecht Dürer refers to as a “peasant-type” woman

^That. That’s what a “peasant” body type looks like.

He labeled this one “A peasant woman of 7 head lengths”

in case you missed it: this figure drawing by a guy in the 1500’s is literally labeled as being of a peasant woman! this is what a “peasant woman” body type looks like!

He did draw similar amounts of thinner figures, but they’re not particularly emphasized over the “Strong” and “Stout” figures. Nor is there exactly a “default” figure. He’s just…going over the range of variations that there are?

Here’s another “stout woman,” covered in notes on how to draw the proportions:

now that’s too technical for me to make any sense of but

this was in the 16th century!! This body type was apparently not incredibly rare in the 16th century. This body type was important enough for you to be able to draw, as an artist, in the 16th century to be handled in detail in a 16th century artist’s drawing advice

In conclusion: yes this is just what people look like, yes it’s important to know how to draw fat bodies, even this dude from the early 1500’s is telling you so, Die Mad About It

all of this is from “The complete drawings of Albrecht Dürer” by Walter L. Strauss

The case for sharks in Minecraft

Mojang has reportedly said that “realistic” sharks will not be included in Minecraft because hostile mobs have to be imaginary creatures. Sure! That makes sense! But listen…there’s an obvious solution.

DON’T MAKE SHARKS HOSTILE MOBS

They don’t have to be bloodthirsty enemies and assuming so is to unnecessarily demonize an animal that is an essential part of the ecosystem.

Instead, make them neutral mobs. They will attack only if you’re holding meat or rotten flesh in your hand, or if you get REALLY close to one, and they generally avoid the player so it’s on you if you try to harass the shark.

Here are some other things sharks could do that are based on reality:

  • Sharks have been found with all sorts of junk in their stomachs. So, you should be able to throw a shark a potion (either a weakness potion or a new one) and make them cough up a variety of junk, including bones, tridents, potentially enchanted books, tools, or….a live chicken.
  • If you row directly above a shark in a boat, it might bite your boat and cause it to drop as an item.
  • If a shark bites a hard block like stone, iron, obsidian etc. it will drop shark teeth
  • Finally:Sharks attack Drowned. The Drowned are made of rotting flesh! A shark would smell that and be drawn to it. So you’d want to have them around to keep the Drowned population down

Instead of assuming sharks would have to be hostile, create gameplay that shows them as creatures that have the right to exist and rewards the player for respecting them

tonight’s round of h/c aesthetics

  • heavy gray skies outside the window, rain sputtering against the roof, wet coat flung dripping across the tiled floor, boots askew and shedding puddles, chattering teeth, stocking feet tucked around a chair rung, faded quilts around their shoulders and a teakettle whistling on the stove
  • a smell of smoke on the stiff wind, ash dancing like tiny flies in the air, the uneven light of distant flames in the dusk, hoarse breaths and hacking coughs, shuddering away from helping hands, cold water dripping out over their trembling lips and making runnels down their dirty shirt-front
  • the pale strange green of potions in dull glass vials, sheathed weapons tossed aside on the ground, old cloth splitting at a knife-point for makeshift bandages, gold afternoon sun brilliant in wincing sensitive eyes, the prickle of dry grass against skin
  • two candles burning on a table cluttered with medicines, a half-full basin of water with a cloth draped over the rim, curtains fluttering in the hint of the night wind, whispered words exchanged just out of hearing, blankets disarranged by restless thrashing trailing on the floorboards
  • circles of light on dirty pavement beneath each streetlamp, crickets in the shadowy bushes singing a relentless chorus, dark splashes of blood on concrete, unsteady steps and hitched breathing and a pinched face, eyes widening in sudden exhausted delight at a familiar figure hurrying towards them

if you GENUINELY care for male victims, at least famous ones, you’d make some noise about these cases. however, these past few months, i have hardly seen a bolstering of these cases. instead i see a campaign of inappropriate memes and edits being made. is that your way to show you “care about male victims” lmao?? by making a mockery of a case discussing dv topics?? i think people like to hide behind the guise of caring about male victims when it’s really just an excuse to engage in inappropriate, obscene behaviors.

Sapnap is exactly who Tommy needs right now, in more ways than one.

While it’s nice he knows there are people in Tommy’s corner (like Quackity and to a certain extent, Phil and Sam) it’s even better for him to have someone at his side and matching his pace. He needs someone who sees how strong he is without forcing everything onto his shoulders. Sapnap is the perfect person for this role.

It’s said multiple times, they teamed up and won against Dream before. They’ve been on opposite sides before and each view the other as a strong opponent and acknowledge each other’s individual PVP skills. This is good for their longterm goal, but there’s something even more important than just the fight. It’s how much Sapnap cares for Tommy as a person, and understands who he is beyond the battles.

The reason Sapnap checked on Tommy in the first place was because Tommy had been talking to himself in the house rather loudly and Sapnap was concerned. {32:28 - SAPNAP: “Dude I was just walking around and I heard you freaking out in here. What’s up with you?} This line partnered with his protectiveness of Tommy during the actual breakout really pushes the fact that he’s well aware of how much danger Tommy is currently in, even if he doesn’t know everything Dream did during exile.

When asked to take off his armor to prove Tommy could trust him, Sapnap didn’t hesitate. He took his armor off and kept his weapons away and stayed level-headed as tommy panicked and shouted. He listened to Tommy’s rambling story and assured him he wasn’t crazy and opened up about his own interaction with Dream in Snowchester.

34:00-
SAPNAP: Tommy, Tommy chill. I believe you dude, okay? I saw Dream also, after he got out. I took his armor.

TOMMY: What happened? What- you did?

SAPNAP: I took his armor, you know his old armor he used to wear? I took em- I took his armor… he came to me.. he just tried to act like we were just friends again.
(…)
TOMMY: What did you do?

SAPNAP: I didn’t give it to him! I refused, Tommy. And you know what he did? He started threatening me.

Sapnap didn’t trust Dream’s “I’m gonna run off and hide away and not bother anyone” idea, and in the end he got to see Dream’s true intentions. He’s well aware of the threat Dream poses now, not just to Tommy but to the entire server.

Sapnap, still remaining under control and keeping Tommy relaxed, once again makes it clear he believes what Tommy is saying about Dream and that they’re on the same page.

Tommy recognizes he has a solid ally and uses plural terms when talking about Tubbo’s old house. Saying “our safehouse” and immediately opening up and entrusting someone else after realizing theyre on the same page. He even thanks Sapnap for believing him.

Sapnap sets a goal, telling Tommy about the vow he made to kill Dream. But he doesn’t push to include Tommy in that right away, he makes sure Tommy is up to the task before anything.

37:04-
TOMMY: …all this exile stuff I’m so nearly done with. I’ve got my hotel, it’s going great- *snaps* just like that. I’m fucking- it’s all gone.

SAPNAP: Look Tommy, even if you’re not up to it-

TOMMY: No Sapnap this isn’t just your- this is us alright? This is our mission.

SAPNAP: Alright, okay. I’m just making sure you’re up for it.

He’s assuring that he’ll go through with the plan no matter what but continues to make sure that mentally Tommy is prepared for what they’re going to be doing. They find their footing and Tommy’s in a clearer mindset to actually start planning things rather than just panic hiding in obsidian.

At this point Tommy is genuinely smiling, he feels safe and is gleefully reminiscing over the past. His demeanor has totally shifted from when he first went into the house.

Tommy doesn’t need people cheering for him from the sidelines or promising to be there when he asks, he needs someone who is going to be right at his side with no hesitation. At the end of the day, Sapnap is the best fit for that roll.

Sapnap already had his mind set on killing Dream. He’s not joining Tommy just because he feels obligated, but because they have a shared goal and strongly understand each other’s reasonings.

Sapnap grounds Tommy, and Tommy gives Sapnap a purpose. If Tommy is going to run head-first into danger he needs someone who won’t hold him back but will still check on him and make sure the plan is finished even if he has to step out. He needs as an ally like Sapnap now more than he ever has.

cheesy rant here but bungie is rlly giving us “season of the slapping toxic masculinity in the face” & im living for it. Outright stating that Crow was crying! giving us a character as strong and aloof as Zavala, then showing him experiencing grief that is too much for him, displaying very real emotions in a fictional setting. the fact that eris outright encourages him to tell our player character how he feels is SO important- how many “male” centered games do that???? The fact that zavala is facing something purely within himself, something that is not solved by shooting at things or blowing shit up but instead with compassion, friendship, and being vulnerable with those close to you. The fact that he didnt succeed in this week’s story and is very clearly going to have to learn and exercise that vulnerability to complete his sever mission. It’s something SO important that I hope every impressionable person playing resonates with! Idc if “it’s not that deep”, I rlly think these are messages that people should hear more often

there are no words to describe how disgusted i am by the fact that netflix would cancel the get down, a show featuring a cast and production crew made up almost entirely of poc that contained lgbt representation and an incredibly intriguing plotline, yet renew 13 reasons why, which was nothing more than a disgustingly inaccurate portrayal of mental illness that doesn’t even have anywhere to go in terms of a storyline. the get down included so much positive representation of so many groups and brought genuine happiness to people who watched it and saw characters that were like them. 13 reasons why was unbelievably negative and inaccurate in the way it handled mental illness and suicide, which were supposed to be its main topics, and did nothing but make people who suffered from depression feel alienated and hurt.

this is an injustice that has no acceptable explanation.

eventually you realize you don’t want to die. you just don’t want to live the life you’re living. and slowly you try to create a life you want to live. just gotta start there.

no one needs to add “sounds fake but ok”, “no”, “well, not me”, “impossible”, etc. to this post. and i’d rather you not.

one day you think: I want to die.

and then you think, very quietly: actually. actually. I think I want a coffee. a nap. a sandwich. a book.

andI want to die turns day by day into I want to go home, I want to walk in the woods, I want to see my friend, I want to sit in the sun

I want a cleaner kitchen

I want a better job

I want to live somewhere else

Giving nurses tiktok was a mistake

“our days are so tough” okay tell me how come ur posts aren’t like “my labour is super exploited” how come all of em are like “this guy has a weird penis lol”? We have channels to talk about what our work is like and how were treated. Making memes like “when ur pt rings the bell too much” or “remember I get to choose the needle gauge” doesn’t actually address any of it it’s just an abuse of ur inherent power over patients.

Every single nurse called out for being a cunt online flies immediately towards guilt tripping ppl into feeling bad for em but it’s a fundamental misunderstanding of how health care power structures work to act like mistreatment from patients is because we are below them in that heirarchy. We are in a position of power over them by virtue of our knowledge and involvement in their care. The fact that clients can be as shitty as they want to u is because ur employers don’t protect u. It’s cuz ur work is devalued and incompatible with capitalism. It’s cuz you’re guilt tripped out of demanding any sort of basic workers rights. None of that is the fault of patients and none of it can be solved by sharing personal embarassing health details abt them on tiktok.

Honestly, some people really need to learn to separate proselytism from just talking about religion. People are allowed to be religious. Talking about religion is not evil. I fully understand some people have religious trauma and stuff but y'all really need to learn to recognize it enough to know the difference between someone just existing and being religious (Especially non xtian faiths) is not a direct attack on you. Some folks just live lives.
