Meet my own interpretation of Thumbelina! A little warrioress (because being so tiny really must forge the character of a girl), Inspired by tulips and all kinds of small things!
So my friend @sweeping-the-clouds-away and I were watching the Don Bluth Thumbelina movie one night, and I was inspired to draw Katie in Thumbelina’s outfit. Then I figured I’d pull Papyrus into the mix and make it a couple’s cosplay. And then I resulted with this.
This time I’ll try to do the inktober thingie! My theme? Characters that I love & are usually ignored/underrated.
Just cos I think they are awesome and need more love! And who is best to start than our favorite French birdie! ^_^ I wanted him to look like a real swallow for once! I hope I’ve achieved that.

Thumbelina is a story that I will probably revisit in another larger illustration that will more completely document her journey. I think it would be simply delightful to make a more detailed and large-scale work based on her story because there are so many interesting characters, strange circumstances, and strong visual elements and patterns woven into this tale that I think that putting everything in one big tableau would look quite spectacular.
As I was drawing and painting Thumbelina, certain themes began to surface and speak to me. She was treated as a commodity by almost everyone around her, and she didn’t have much control over her journey or her fate. Most of her saviours turned into captors. She kept moving forward, willingly or not, without the certainty of whether she’d be in a beter place but knowing for sure that she couldn’t remain where she was.
Although in the beginning of the story, she seemed too naïve and airheaded for my taste, I realize that she was really just a kid when she first started her journey, and that we were all too in the beginning of ours, and it’s a reminder to my cynical and worldly self to have a bit more compassion and empathy for this type of character.
In this scene, Thumbelina is about to be wed to a mole and to be forever homed underground, never to see the sun again. Even as the mole grasps her with his claws, she looks away towards the azure wings of her swallow friend who has come to take her away to her final destination.
