Rūrangi (2020).

A trans man reunites with his ex-boyfriend. ID in alt.

For a review of Rūrangi, see this link. It’s a movie about being trans, being Māori, discovering your sexuality, being exhausted by activism, and reconnecting with family. It was originally released as a series, but was re-released as a feature film later.

Caz, the trans protagonist, is played by a trans male actor (Elz Carrad). All trans characters are played by trans actors. The writer (Cole Meyers) is trans. Tweedie Waititi, Taika Waititi’s sister, was brought in as a consultant to develop the film’s Māori storylines.

I highly recommend this film.

literally my favourite short series. please watch it if you haven’t

Because I failed to include this in the original post, here’s where you can access it!

SBS On Demand:

  • Free!
  • Movie version.
  • Requires Australian VPN if you’re elsewhere.

Hulu:

  • Free trial.
  • Episode version.
  • Requires Australian VPN if you’re elsewhere.

NEON:

  • Free trial.
  • Movie version.
  • Requires New Zealand VPN if you’re elsewhere.

Apple TV/iTunes:

  • £9.99.
  • Movie version.
  • Depends on location, may require VPN.

I would personally recommend accessing Rūrangi through legal means (purchasing it or watching it through a streaming subscription), because it deserves your money and clicks. Not only was a trans man cast in the central role, but 59% of the cast and crew were non-binary, and the motto of the film is “by us and about us”. If anything deserves your hard-earned dollars, it’s Rūrangi. They set out to make a good movie, and they managed to do that while employing members of our community. Beyond the groundbreaking representation and behind-the-scenes inclusivity, it’s just… a genuinely touching, watchable production.

But! I know that not everybody can afford to pay for media. If you can, please do ❤️
