Prompt 3 - Coffee

Takes place after Fade into the Night and Louder than Thunder

“Kagami.”

He stirred a little bit, letting out a faint noise of discontent. He was warm and comfortable, a pleasant scent filling his nose every time he breathed in. He was just so tired, he didn’t want to leave the warm comfort of the -

Of the bed he’d fallen asleep in -

Kagami’s eyes snapped open and he jerked up into a seated position, the room spinning.

Tobirama’s bed he’d fallen asleep in-

Kagami looked up with wide eyes at the Senju looming above him, two steaming mugs in hand, staring down at him with an elegant silver brow quirked. Embarrassment surged through him, causing his face to flush a bright red, and Kagami stammered, “S-sen - Sensei, this isn’t-”

“You’re fine, Kagami.” Tobirama hummed and pressed one of the mugs into Kagami’s hands. The Uchiha was forced to grab a hold lest the liquid spill all over his lap - and the bed - Tobirama’s bed - “You haven’t been sleeping well, yes? You’re fully welcome to rest here if need be.”

Yeah, sure - rest within the home of his Sensei and former Hokage and not the Uchiha compound where everyone keeps staring at him and whispering behind his back for going out of his way like he was-

He shook his head, gathering his nerves, and looked up at Tobirama with a weary smile. “A-ah, yeah. Right. Thank you, Sensei. I just… didn’t want to impose-”

“It is no imposition.” Tobirama said with a blunt honesty and took a seat next to him with a sigh. “I will keep saying you are welcome here for as long as it takes to cement in your mind. As I do with my reminders that I am no longer your sensei - nor your Hokage. You can just call me Tobirama, Kagami.”

Kagami felt hyper-aware of Tobirama’s body mere inches away from him. Watched as the Senju bent down to press a gentle glowing hand to his leg, as the tightness on his brow seemed to ease, and a soft exhale escaped him as whatever tension he was carrying drained away. The collar of his shirt had fallen open, mess stretching tantalising across his broad chest-

Kagami coughed and quickly brought the cup to his mouth, downing a mouthful without tasting - and then doubletaked and took another, actually tasting it this time, and it was enough to drive away the impure thoughts that started creeping through his mind. Tobirama always made the best coffee, and knew just how Kagami liked it without kicking up a judgemental fuss.

A healthy dash of cream and an unhealthy amount of sugar.

It was one of the scents - the tastes, even - that Kagami couldn’t help but associate Tobirama with, especially after the Senju’s forced retirement. Ink, paper, the heavy taste of ozone that tended to permeate Tobirama’s lab - and coffee.

Coffee was probably the only consumable thing he could make and have it still be palatable. The man couldn’t cook for the life of him, and would probably subsist on ration pills alone if Kagami didn’t make them proper food to eat. Kagami wasn’t the greatest cook himself, but at least he could make a pot of rice without burning it to the bottom. 

Kagami had no doubt that Tobirama would be very lost if he didn’t come around as often as he did. Kagami was the reason Tobirama left his lab for more than ten minutes at a time. Kagami was the reason that Tobirama showered frequently. Kagami was the reason Tobirama slept in a proper bed, the reason he ate a proper meal, the reason he got a breath of fresh air and interacted with other people.

Tobirama didn’t have anyone else. 

( Hiruzen, Danzo, Homura, Koharu, they were all busy with their own responsibilities to pay their former teacher and leader a modicum of attention, and if Kagami was allowed to dwell on that for too long something dark, all consuming, and angry gnawed at the corners of his mind - and that scared him-)

“You’re too kind to me, S- Tobirama.” He corrected, the back of his neck feeling overly warm. “Here I am invading your private spaces all the time - don’t you find it… annoying?”

Don’t you find me annoying? You weren’t receptive at all in the beginning, I know, but…

Tobirama quirked a brow as he sipped at his mug - black as the night with no additives - and shook his head. “You’re only concerning yourself with this now ?”

The heat crept over Kagami’s face and he let out a faint laugh. “Well, you know. I wasn’t sleeping in your bed before, was I?”

And sage, the implications someone could get from that .

“I don’t mind.” Tobirama said - apparently not getting those implications at all. “Kagami, you…”

Kagami looked at him, a faint frown creasing his face at the serious note in Tobirama’s voice. “Tobirama?”

The Senju met his eyes for a moment, before glancing away. “I know I have thanked you before, but I feel I need to say it again. Thank you. For your patience with me. For all you have done for me.”

Kagami’s mouth went dry, and his heart in his chest gave an odd flutter. “Sensei, I…”

Tobirama cleared his throat and stood. “I need to get back to my lab, there’s something I need to do. You’re free to rest some more.”

And then he was gone out the door, leaving Kagami to clutch his mug, with something that felt like anxiety suddenly curling through his gut.

Why did that feel… Almost like a goodbye?

He emerged when he could no longer hold his breath and was witness to Madara struggling over a particularly stubborn knot and cursing up a storm, so Tobirama finally decided to take pity on him. He fished up the oil and a comb and waded over, noting the way Madara stiffened but didn’t pull away. He looked at Tobirama with dark eyes, lips pursed, hair sticking to his skin and covered in suds - appearance the definition of a drowned rat.

Tobirama valiantly didn’t laugh - but he couldn’t stop the way his lips quirked into a smirk. “Allow me?”

Madara let out a faint ‘tch’, and then turned his back to Tobirama, resting his elbows on the stone. A wordless invitation.

One that had Tobirama’s breath stalling.
