Top Gun: Maverick

“Top Gun: Maverick” has earned my love, respect, and praise.

Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is still a U.S. Navy test pilot because flying is his passion. He’s brought back to TOPGUN to train the best pilots in the world for a highly dangerous mission. An unsanctioned uranium enrichment plant threatens the national security of the United States and it’s up to the students at TOPGUN to take it down. To pull off the mission, they need to master almost impossible maneuvers and pray they get two miracles. The problem is, one of Maverick’s students is the son of his late friend, Goose.

I am so pumped after watching this movie. The IMAX experience is well worth it and I think it’s probably the best IMAX experience I’ve ever had. I have so much to gush about this film, so let’s get started. Tom Cruise is amazing in this movie. His character, Maverick, truly feels like the authentic older version of himself in the original movie. He’s a lot older and wiser, but still retains his rebellious spirit. Tom Cruise’s performance makes it feel like Maverick never left. I also know that Tom Cruise was reportedly a perfectionist when it came to this movie and I’m so glad he was. I believe that it was through his guidance that this movie came out as good as it did. It was well worth the thirty-six year wait. I commented about how the dogfight scenes were some of my least favorite parts of the original movie. That was because it was hard to make out what was going on and who was who. With the technological advancements we made in the past few decades, the new dogfight scenes are gripping and exciting due to crystal clear visual clarity. Every action scene is shot with purpose and thought. I forgot how to breathe in those scenes because I was right there in the cockpit with the pilots. There’s also a lot of creative maneuvers that just flat out impressed the hell out of me. Even with all this praise, I still believe that the characters are the best part of this movie. Miles Teller’s Rooster was the main reason why I wanted to see this movie. I wanted to see how the dynamic would work between him and Maverick and boy did this movie deliver. Every scene with the two of them together were electrifying. I could really feel the torment in Maverick’s heart from the weight he’s been bearing for all those years. The complexity of his situation was eating away at his soul and all of it was up for display behind Maverick’s eyes. The chemistry between all the students of TOPGUN was so much fun to watch. They have great banter with each other, but still feel like family. I know that they have each others’ backs whether it’s hundreds of meters in the air or at the bottom of a glass at the bar. The comedy landed every time, which was probably helped by Maverick’s lack of singing in this movie. The thing is, the drama was so strong that within certain scenes, I’d be laughing from a joke and suffering from the whiplash of a heavy comment. Then the next scene, I’d be gripping onto my movie theater recliner for dear life. This movie is phenomenal on its own. It’s a great theater experience that utilized the IMAX format to its fullest potential. It’s also a phenomenal sequel that builds upon the last movie in interesting ways. This is the summer blockbuster that I’ve been waiting on for a very long time.
