The film finds Thor on a journey unlike anything he’s ever faced — a quest for inner peace. But his retirement is interrupted by a galactic killer known as Gorr the God Butcher, who seeks the extinction of the gods. To combat the threat, Thor enlists the help of King Valkyrie, Korg, and ex-girlfriend Jane Foster, who — to Thor’s surprise — inexplicably wields his magical hammer, Mjolnir, as the Mighty Thor. Together, they embark upon a harrowing cosmic adventure to uncover the mystery of the God Butcher’s vengeance and stop him before it’s too late.

Top Gun: Maverick

“Top Gun: Maverick” has earned my love, respect, and praise.

Pete ‘Maverick’ Mitchell is still a U.S. Navy test pilot because flying is his passion. He’s brought back to TOPGUN to train the best pilots in the world for a highly dangerous mission. An unsanctioned uranium enrichment plant threatens the national security of the United States and it’s up to the students at TOPGUN to take it down. To pull off the mission, they need to master almost impossible maneuvers and pray they get two miracles. The problem is, one of Maverick’s students is the son of his late friend, Goose.

I am so pumped after watching this movie. The IMAX experience is well worth it and I think it’s probably the best IMAX experience I’ve ever had. I have so much to gush about this film, so let’s get started. Tom Cruise is amazing in this movie. His character, Maverick, truly feels like the authentic older version of himself in the original movie. He’s a lot older and wiser, but still retains his rebellious spirit. Tom Cruise’s performance makes it feel like Maverick never left. I also know that Tom Cruise was reportedly a perfectionist when it came to this movie and I’m so glad he was. I believe that it was through his guidance that this movie came out as good as it did. It was well worth the thirty-six year wait. I commented about how the dogfight scenes were some of my least favorite parts of the original movie. That was because it was hard to make out what was going on and who was who. With the technological advancements we made in the past few decades, the new dogfight scenes are gripping and exciting due to crystal clear visual clarity. Every action scene is shot with purpose and thought. I forgot how to breathe in those scenes because I was right there in the cockpit with the pilots. There’s also a lot of creative maneuvers that just flat out impressed the hell out of me. Even with all this praise, I still believe that the characters are the best part of this movie. Miles Teller’s Rooster was the main reason why I wanted to see this movie. I wanted to see how the dynamic would work between him and Maverick and boy did this movie deliver. Every scene with the two of them together were electrifying. I could really feel the torment in Maverick’s heart from the weight he’s been bearing for all those years. The complexity of his situation was eating away at his soul and all of it was up for display behind Maverick’s eyes. The chemistry between all the students of TOPGUN was so much fun to watch. They have great banter with each other, but still feel like family. I know that they have each others’ backs whether it’s hundreds of meters in the air or at the bottom of a glass at the bar. The comedy landed every time, which was probably helped by Maverick’s lack of singing in this movie. The thing is, the drama was so strong that within certain scenes, I’d be laughing from a joke and suffering from the whiplash of a heavy comment. Then the next scene, I’d be gripping onto my movie theater recliner for dear life. This movie is phenomenal on its own. It’s a great theater experience that utilized the IMAX format to its fullest potential. It’s also a phenomenal sequel that builds upon the last movie in interesting ways. This is the summer blockbuster that I’ve been waiting on for a very long time.

The Incredible Hulk

“The Incredible Hulk” is a surprisingly great film and the fact that no one really talks about this film is a shame.

Bruce Banner is a scientist who, after a freak accident, is cursed with the power of transforming into a giant green beast, called The Hulk, whenever his heart rate gets too high. The military, led by General Ross, wants to dissect Bruce to study his power and use it as a weapon. Bruce decides to lay low and try to get rid of his powers through any means necessary. After he’s exhausted all his resources and options, he gets discovered and must now be on the move. With the help of Betty Ross, Bruce must get rid of the potential danger being the Hulk comes with before it falls into the corrupt hands of the government.

I know that traditionally, in the comics, Bruce transforms into the Hulk whenever he gets too angry. This film did follow that loosely, but mainly stuck with the heart rate being the cause of his transformation. I personally like the heart rate choice a bit better because it’s easier to quantify what causes his transformation and the heart rate monitor watch on his wrist was an excellent visual gauge of when he’s close to changing. This whole films is injected with style and grit. Showing the audience how many days until the last incident really made me feel as if Bruce’s transformations had some gravity in terms of consequence. Edward Norton is a phenomenal actor and it’s sad to see such talent not being in the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War”. It’s not that I don’t like Mark Ruffalo. It’s just I like Edward Norton as Bruce Banner a bit better. I know that it’s extremely difficult to write a story for a character that is virtually indestructible, but I feel that the choice of focusing more on Bruce Banner rather than Hulk actually worked in this film’s favor. It made the story more compelling and it humanized a side of Hulk that we don’t really get to see in current Marvel films. Most Marvel films now are riddled with comedy, which isn’t inherently a bad thing, but I miss those days when comic book movies had a bit more of a serious tone to them. All in all, “The Incredible Hulk” is a refreshing and nostalgic film to watch in preparation for the upcoming “Avengers: Infinity War”. The Hulk never got any sequels, so it’s really the only isolated look into the personality of Bruce Banner and it’s a damn good look at that too.
