#tuesdays with morrie
Today is Tuesday. A perfect day to read Tuesdays with Morrie by Mitch Albom. It was a nice small book I could take with me while I waited to see the dentist. I finished the whole book. Although I tried not to cry in front of the other people in the waiting room, Morrie made me feel like it would be okay to let it out and allow my emotions to penetrate me, as he says, fully. Then the hygienist called my name and I had to detach myself…
I love some of Morrie’s aphorisms, like “when you’re in bed, you’re dead,” but above all, his in-depth conversations with Mitch will stay with me for many Tuesdays. Here are two insightful lines that really stuck with me before and after I sat in that dreadful dentist chair with my mouth hanging open and my heart pounding as usual:
“Do the kinds of things that come from the heart. When you do, you won’t be dissatisfied, you won’t be envious, you won’t be longing for somebody else’s things. On the contrary, you’ll be overwhelmed with what comes back.”
And we can’t forget: “The truth is, Mitch,” he said, “once you learn how to die you learn how to live.”
This book told me things I feel like I already knew but needed to hear again. In the wise words of Morrie (and W.H. Auden), “Love or perish.”
