Mormon Ladies In Idaho?
Are there any LDS ladies in Idaho that would like to talk? Maybe eventually meet up? Just looking to be naughty with a like minded individual. ;)
Happy 100th Birthday, Gail Halvorsen - 10/10/20
Gail was a Mormon farm boy from Utah who joined the Army Air Forces during World War 2. In 1948, he was one of many pilots in the Berlin Air Lift: West Berlin, occupied by British, French and American forces had its ground routes cut off by the Soviet Union, so for nearly a year, West Berlin was supplied entirely by air.
During some time on the ground, he talked to some children that were watching the planes take off and land. He had two sticks of Doublemint gum that he gave to them, which they shared between them. Touched, he promised he’d drop off some more next time he landed. When asked how they’d know it was him, he said he’d wiggle his wings. He became known as Uncle Wiggly Wings. And he did drop off candy from his cockpit, on parachutes made of handkerchiefs.
This was found out by the chain of command, and established Operation Little Vittles (the main airlift was called Operation Vittles). Manufacturers donated sweets which were distributed to the children of Berlin. Halvorsen became known as the Rosinenbomber or Raisin Bomber.
To this day, he is such a beloved figure in Berlin that his visits there are considered newsworthy.
While his actions were used as pro American PR, Halvorsen himself was a guy who wanted to be kind to children.
He’s still around, and on October 10, 2020, he’ll be 100 years old. I hope he has a wonderful birthday with his loved ones.
I regret to inform that Gail Halvorsen passed away yesterday, February 16, 2022, at age 101.
He devoted much of his life to bring kindness to children. That is a glorious legacy.
Rest in peace.
I didn’t want to hijack that great post about trek with my own opinions that would have diverted from the very important main topic of that post. So I thought I’d do my own.
Trek is stupid and bad.
My great-great-grandfather was part of the doomed Willie handcart company in 1856. He was 23 years old. 68 out of 404 people died on the way. That’s one out of six people.
To try and replicate a G-rated version of that as a “faith promoting experience” is an obscenity and an insult to the memory of all those who suffered through it.
