Violence: A Writer’s Guide This is not about writing technique. It is an introduction to the world of violence. To the parts that people don’t understand. The parts that books and movies get wrong. Not just the mechanics, but how people who live in a violent world think and feel about what they do and what they see done.

Hurting Your Characters:HURTING YOUR CHARACTERS discusses the immediate effect of trauma on the body, its physiologic response, including the types of nerve fibers and the sensations they convey, and how injuries feel to the character. This book also presents a simplified overview of the expected recovery times for the injuries discussed in young, otherwise healthy individuals.

Body Trauma: A writer’s guide to wounds and injuries. Body Trauma explains what happens to body organs and bones maimed by accident or intent and the small window of opportunity for emergency treatment. Research what happens in a hospital operating room and the personnel who initiate treatment. Use these facts to bring added realism to your stories and novels.

10 B.S. Medical Tropes that Need to Die TODAY…and What to Do Instead: Written by a paramedic and writer with a decade of experience, 10 BS Medical Tropes covers exactly that: clichéd and inaccurate tropes that not only ruin books, they have the potential to hurt real people in the real world.

Maim Your Characters: How Injuries Work in Fiction: Increase Realism. Raise the Stakes. Tell Better Stories. Maim Your Characters is the definitive guide to using wounds and injuries to their greatest effect in your story. Learn not only the six critical parts of an injury plot, but more importantly, how to make sure that the injury you’re inflicting matters

Blood on the Page: This handy resource is a must-have guide for writers whose characters live on the edge of danger. If you like easy-to-follow tools, expert opinions from someone with firsthand knowledge, and you don’t mind a bit of fictional bodily harm, then you’ll love Samantha Keel’s invaluable handbook

throwawaywhumper:

This is your whump-blog wellness reminder post! Just wanted to mention a couple of things, whether its a casual reminder or something you didn’t know:

1. If you’re worried about your whump blog getting banned or deactivated by tumblr, remember that you can actually export and download the content of your blog in an easy file. That way if it gets banned, its easier to set yourself back up. Simply go into your blog settings on desktop, scroll to the bottom, there should be an option that looks like this to export your blog.

2. If you want more interaction, make sure your inbox has anonymous turned on. A lot of people like to lurk in the whump community and don’t want their identity revealed, but still like to show support through interaction. Anon gives them the space to do that, and of course remember to turn it off if you ever get uncomfortable

3. Don’t forget to tag your triggers! If you miss one or two that you didn’t realize, its okay as long as you’re open to adding more in the future as need. I find it helpful to make a private list of things to watch for, and then read through that to see if any apply to my writing.

4. If you’ve got especially graphic or nsfw content, its a good rule of thumb to put it under a read more if possible

5. If something makes you uncomfortable, don’t hesitate to block it out, there’s no shame in that at all and it doesn’t make you any less part of the community :)

And last but not least, remember that you’re valid in your interest! Liking whump doesn’t make you a bad person, its okay <3

okay but that first one tho

So I’ve noticed a bunch of medical errors in fics I read, so I decided to post this handy guide to some of the most common errors and some background on basic medical things.

ps- they are not medical treatment or first aid advice. I’m not actually a doctor. yet. but I am certified in first aid. this is just so your writing can be more realistic.

Some Oxford snowbaz date ideas. (I live here sometimes. I’d know)

  1. the science museum
  2. the ashmolean museum - it’s basically for art (they do brunch on the roof)
  3. the museum of natural history
  4. the storybook museum
  5. botanical gardens
  6. sometimes there’s a market on Broad Street
  7. crazy golf (it’s called the Junkyard Golf Club and it’s insane)
  8. picnic in university parks (uni parks)/ port meadow/ Christchurch meadow
  9. punting (it’s boat stuff. I really can’t explain it better)
  10. playhouse (a personal favourite, it’s cheap and the ones that are performed by students are rather good). There’s a large playhouse that fits a couple hundred and a small playhouse that fits 50 round the corner.
  11. The Sheldonian theatre (that’s more opera/ orchestra type stuff than plays)
  12. The “oldest” coffee shop in the UK or to spice things up, the “oldest” tea shop in the UK which is just across the road (Literally). I’m sceptical as to whether they are truly the oldest.
  13. Bookshops (Waterstones, Blackwells) blackwells has a massive basement full of books, I love it. There’s also some smaller bookshops obviously.
  14. Tour the historical prison ?? I’m running out of ideas.
  15. There are ghost tours around the city but that’s just tourist stuff.
  16. Magdalen Deer Park
  17. There’s at least 2 board game cafes I know about.

(I shall keep thinking)
