Another familiar and distinctive face this evening - as his previous picture was so deservedly well-received I thought I would include another of Asrah, the model of striking good looks who appeared in so much of Wilhelm von Gloeden’s work throughout his time in Taormina.

The glorious Nicola Giancola, photographed by F. Holland Day in the early years of the 20th century, but utterly timeless in beauty and sensuality. A much-improved copy of this exquisite photograph, I make no apologies for a repeat when the image is so breathtaking!

The moment I realised there was more than one Cainphotograph in Wilhelm von Gloeden’s catalogue, I started to spot more and more variations. This one bears small ink annotations in von Gloeden’s own hand; if anyone can read what they say and would care to share with all the readers here, I’d be delighted to add that information to my caption!

A treasure from Guglielmo Plüschow, a young man of exquisite poise and singularly fine form, seated so delightfully delicately on the sumptuous rich fabrics of satin sheen and soft folds, and framed by prettily dishevelled flowers. His deep dark sun tan with lighter marks and palest chest, leads my mind to wonder what he may do for a living, wearing sometimes shorts and short sleeves, other times clearly no more than a vest. Many of the models were fishermen or farm labourers in their everyday lives, transformed for just a few moments into something sublime; these timeless beauties captured forever for our admiration.

A gorgeous, glorious photograph credited to von Gloeden, a fine young man stretched out languidly to bask in the sun, so seductive and so evocative, you can almost feel the heat on skin and hear the hum of summer insects as he lounges there, so long ago but still so beautiful before our eyes. Look closely, for the mole right by his nipple - they should not only be called beauty marks when they show upon the face.

Billy Wood (c. 1913)

[loc.gov]

If only more photographs were annotated this way, it is always a pleasure to know what name belongs with the models we see! Unfortunately I’ve not been able to find any biographical details for this particular Billy Wood, so if anyone knows more about him, do let me know and I’ll be glad to add a little about his life.

[edit to add - My thanks to wrestlingfred who sent the following :
a user on Flickr suggests different William Wood possibly to be the model: amongst them British wrestler at the 1908 Summer Olympics.

A beautiful softly lit photograph of a remarkably handsome man, neither date nor credits known and so this may fall a little outside my collection’s intended era, but as it is such a very attractive picture I hope you will not mind, dear readers!

I’ve been collecting variations on von Gloeden’s famed 1902 “Cain” photograph for a little while now, this perhaps the greatest variation of all as the model has turned to face the opposite way.
