A U.S. Navy Curtiss SB2C-5 Helldiver of attack squadron VA-9A “Tough Kitties” is lifted to the flight deck of the aircraft carrier USS Philippine Sea (CV-47) in preparation for launch from the carrier. Other squadron aircraft are visible aft, in 1948.
Redesignated from bombing squadron VB-20 in November 1946, VA-9A completed one cruise to the Mediterranean aboard the Philippine Sea during the period 9 February to 26 June 1948. VA-9A was redesignated VA-94 in August 1948 and disestablished in November 1949. Photo date: 1948

Since some of you - @auressea & @wikdsushi-v2 especially - in the tags showed your interest in that particular hand spin, here it is:

It’s called liñareand as you can see its a stick with a diamond shaped piece on one end where flax was put and then secured with a kind of little hat made of fabric called goru-txapel.

The spindle can be seen perfectly in this pic above.

Vintage Calabria, Italy. Giro d'Italia, 1954. Reggio Calabria - Catanzaro stage. The cheer of Calabrian women.

The name “Giro d'Italia” simply means "tour of Italy,” an apt name for the stage bicycle race Italy puts on each year in May. It’s one of three Grand Tours, together with the Tour de France and the Vuelta a España in Spain.

The first Giro was in 1909, put together by the sports newspaper La Gazzetta dello Sport as a publicity stunt.

With any stage race, there are daily winners and overall winners. Time for each stage is accumulated throughout the entire race, and the rider who completes the entire course in the least overall time is the winner.

People don’t often look back on the early 1900’s for advice, but what if we could actually learn something from the Lost Generation? The New York Public Library has digitized 100 “how to do it” cards found in cigarette boxes over 100 years ago, and the tips they give are so practical that millennials reading this might want to take notes.

Back in the day, cigarette cards were popular collectibles included in every pack, and displayed photos of celebrities, advertisements, and more. Gallaher cigarettes, a UK-founded tobacco company that was once the largest in the world, decided to print a series of helpful how-to’s on their cards, which ranged from mundane tasks (boiling potatoes) to unlikely scenarios (stopping a runaway horse). Most of them are insanely clever, though, like how to make a fire extinguisher at home. Who even knew you could do that?

The entire set of life hacks is now part of the NYPL’s George Arents Collection. Check out some of the cleverest ones we could find below. You never know when you’ll have to clean real lace!
