‘Las Arenas’ | Richard Rogers + Alonso i Balaguer | 2011 | Barcelona
Transformation of an historic bullring stadium in a commercial complex by Richard Rogers and local architects Alonso Balaguer.
This former bullring has been converted into a leisure complex, retaining the original facade. It has been given a 76m wide domed roof that is braced to the original structure, providing roof terraces overlooking the city.
The approach for the original 19th century bullring uses the most advanced architectural and engineering technologies in response to the brief, while respecting and celebrating the fabric of the historical bullring to re-establish the building as a visually striking landmark for the city. The most spectacular aspect of the intervention is the inclusion of a 100-metre-diameter habitable ‘dish’ with a 76-metre-diameter domed roof, floating over the façade – and structurally independent from it – providing flexible, column-free spaces beneath the dome. This ‘plaza in the sky’ incorporates large terraces around the perimeter with space for cafés and restaurants, providing stunning views across the city.

Xavier Corberó’s House.
Born in Barcelona in 1935, Xavier Corberó’s career spans over 50 years, during which time his work has been exhibited across the world, from NYC to Japan. Considered by some to be the most significant Catalan artist of the past 50 years, his most remarkable piece of work, and undoubtedly his most personal, is his home which he has been designing and curating for the past 40 years.
In 1967 he acquired an ancient house and plot of land in Esplugues de Llobregat, a village in the outskirts of Barcelona, and developed it extensively until his death in 2017 into a highly elaborate complex of houses (largely devoted to hosting artists-in-residence, as well as his own residence) and exhibition spaces, which also houses a significant sample of his sculptures and personal collections.
The exteriors include geometric concrete structures stacking at different heights to create commanding sculptures amidst the wild surrounds and bodies of water.
A construction where the most representative are its multiple arches with mirador function. Every detail of this house has the objective to let see the exterior beauty, the natural light. Pursuing to connect art and nature. Pursuing that the home was authentic poetry…

It was the German Pavilion for the 1929 International Exposition in Barcelona. This building was used for the official opening of the German section of the exhibition. It is an important building in the history of modern architecture, known for its simple form and its spectacular use of extravagant materials, such as marble, red onyx and travertine. The same features of minimalism and spectacular can be applied to the prestigious furniture specifically designed for the building, among which the iconic Barcelona chair.
