Usually, it was an accident. A lie I never set out to tell. A trick I never meant to play. I’d open my mouth, and something strange would come out, new and not mine. Like there was someone else inside.

wilder girls pissed me off because it’s genuinely such a good premise and there’s so much that could have been done with it but then it just absolutely falls flat on its face. the potential for metaphors about puberty and femininity is so blatant that it’s almost weirder that it’s explained in a scientific context, especially one that focuses on the island and not the girls themselves. it would have worked far better imo if it had just been left surreal instead of the last second attempt to make it somewhat realistic

Rory Powers writes a kind of horror that you cannot get out of your mind once you have finished reading. The elements of body horror she imagines as a result of environmental complications are chilling. These are the kind of books that will make you want to treat the earth with respect just to avoid the wrath of Mother Nature.
