Top of the Wired Magazine Thanksgiving list, as it deserves to be.

Side note: there’s apparently no love for The Bob Newhart Show’s “Over the River and Through the Woods” (which is a damn shame) but South Park’s “Helen Keller: The Musical” is included.

Witness Jack Davis’ art draft for his February 14-20, 1981 WKRP TV Guide cover.  Ink and watercolor on illustration board, measuring 20 by 14.5+ inches.  Sold for “best offer” on 1/22/19 (opening bid had been $625).

This was only used for the US cover.  The Canadian cover, interestingly enough, was also a WKRP cover, with Richard, Gary, and the Silver Sow.

Herb’s into Zappa (specifically The Mothers’ “Just Another Band From L.A.” album)? That explains…pretty much nothing.

Nice group shot from the December 28, 1982 issue of the National Enquirer.

Today, September 18, is the 40th anniversary of the premiere of WKRP in Cincinnati. To celebrate, please enjoy an interview I did with Howard and Jan last week at the Mid-Atlantic Nostalgia Convention in Maryland. I hope you learn something new.

And my jacket? It’s real; I wish I could’ve properly showed the back (with the show logo), but it was just amazing to be there with both of them.

Last week the news came through that Allyn Ann McLerie had passed at the age of 91.  An accomplished stage and screen actress, she might be most memorable for her television roles, chief among them (at least on this blog) Carmen Carlson on four episodes of WKRP in Cincinnati (with a return appearance on The New WKRP).

I think she’s fairly underrated, and I could go on for days about her.  Instead, I’ll direct you to my appearance on episode 28 of the Hold My Order, Terrible Dresser podcast (and accompanying minisodes 1, 2, and 3) for a good primer on Allyn (as well as a discussion of season three episodes “Real Families” and “The Baby”).

Picture, if you will, Point Place, Wisconsin.  The year is 1977.  A man and his son have just watched the man’s wife go angrily upstairs to sleep.  What they don’t know, and will soon find out, is that it’s the thirteenth (possibly in October) and they just forgot her birthday.  Red Forman picks up a TV Guide, but not just any TV Guide.  It’s a certain TV Guide with four guys from a semi-popular Cincinnati radio station.

This is from That ‘70s Show season 3, episode 17, titled “Kitty’s Birthday (That’s Today?!)” and it stunned me when I noticed it.  If you can’t see it too well in these images, here’s a closer look:

Despite the fact that the Forman scene takes place in 1977, and that issue didn’t come out until 1978, and the other fact that Red is looking at listings for the 13th, and the issue actually was for October 21-27 (hey, they got the month correct), this Easter Egg is pretty darn cool.

Here’s the scene in question:

I’ve been trying to collect my thoughts ever since I heard about Howard’s passing (many thanks to the many and varied friends who blew up my phone today just to let me know and ask how I am).

Maybe the best way to share how I feel is to repost the interview I did with Howard and Jan back in 2018 for the Mid Atlantic Nostalgia Convention (I believe I did my best and I know it shows). I am forever grateful he and Jan took some time to show a devoted fan a good time.

Goodbye, Johnny.

Bengals won one for Johnny today, and Cincinnati is going to the Super Bowl!

You might want to sit down for this, fellow babies. The Doctor is out.
