QueenSugarOWN:  It’s all about telling authentic stories in an authentic way.

VOICEOVER, by Ava DuVernay:

“Storytelling is a radical act, especially when it is told by someone who is not often centered, which is the case with Queen Sugar. With the women and people of color telling these stories, you know, it becomes an act of defiance. An act of rebellion. An act of revolution, if you will. It can be our way, and our way is valid and it’s beautiful. We’re the lucky ones.”

This.

Despite a wealth of formidable contenders, the Academy Awards once again nominated zero women for Best Director, and nominations presenter Issa Rae noticed immediately. “Congratulations to those men,” she said.

The total female shutout follows a similar result at the Golden Globes — even though a number of acclaimed 2019 films were directed by women, including Greta Gerwig’s “Little Women,” Lulu Wang’s “The Farewell,” Lorene Scafaria’s “Hustlers,” Marielle Heller’s “A Beautiful Day in the Neighborhood,” Céline Sciamma’s “Portrait of a Lady on Fire” and Mati Diop’s “Atlantics.”

Our director, Cate Carson, is working on another bad-ass project with the Alliance of Women Director

Our director, Cate Carson, is working on another bad-ass project with the Alliance of Women Directors, premiering in October at Disney Studios. We can’t wait to share more about it, and will definitely release more info as it develops.

In the meantime, Cate, and the rest of the core team and department heads of PURE are still plugging away at pre-production for our pilot episode. Locations are locked, costumes are being made, and we are meeting with weapons masters to begin creating the prop weapons for our fight sequence. More to come!

‘Spider-Man’ Spinoff: Silver Sable, Black Cat Movie Finds Director

Gina Prince-Bythewood, who wrote and directed The Secret Life of Bees, will direct Silver and Black, Sony’s Spider-Man offshoot that centers on characters Silver Sable and the Black Cat.

Silver Sable, created by Tom DeFalco and Ron Frenz in 1985, is a mercenary who runs a company that hunts war criminals. The character has been both antagonist and ally to Spider-Man.

Black Cat, an acrobatic cat burglar whose real name is Felicia Hardy, has a long and tangled romantic history with Spider-Man in the comics. The character was cut from scripts for the Sam Raimi Spider-Man trilogy, and a “Felicia Hardy” (played by Felicity Jones) briefly appeared in Amazing Spider-Man 2, though no Black Cat connection was ever made explicit.

Note:  This deal will make Prince-Bythewood the first black woman to direct a superhero movie, the second woman of colour (following Lexi Alexander) and the 4th woman overall to direct a live-action superhero feature film following Lexi Alexander, Patty Jenkins and Anna Boden (co-directing with Ryan Fleck).

Only One Woman of Color Has Directed an Animated Movie in the Past 12 Years

In recent years, television and film animation have made headlines for progress in inclusive storylines, including historic same-sex relationships and plus-size superheroes. Unfortunately, though, a new study from the USC Annenberg Inclusion Initiative discovered that the same spirit of representation doesn’t appear to have spread to those working behind the scenes.

According to the new study, over the past 12 years, only 3% of animated movies were directed by women, Variety reported. That number is even smaller among women of color — Jennifer Yuh Nelson, who directed Kung Fun Panda 2, was the only woman of color to direct an animated film.

When it came to women directors working on television series, the number improved, but only slightly, Variety reported. Thirteen percent of animated programs that aired in 2018 were directed by a woman, and just three of those directors were women of color.
