Grammy Awards 2015 Red Carpet

Awards season has opened - not much time ‘til the Oscars - together with Fashion Week in New York opening later this week. Counting that I also have an exam to take on Friday, this means A LOT OF WORK for me.

But it’s fine, I love my blog and I love my few readers, and I love what I do. And I couldn’t wait to see the dresses celebrities worn for the red carpet of the most important musical event of the year: the Grammys.

In general, such an event it’s like the Oscars: everyone tries to dress up more soberly than usual, but remember that it’s all about singers and celebrities, and we all know how they like being in the spotlight - sometimes a little bit too much.

Check out my BEST DRESSED and WORST DRESSED lists. Here we go!

BEST DRESSED

Antonique Smith in Caché: There were many unusual choices as to dress code for this year’s Grammys, both for the best dressed and for the worst dressed. Indeed, instead of choosing the most famous celebrities wearing the most beautiful yet predictable gowns - see Beyonce, stunning as usual but with a choice of dress we’ve seen millions of times on the red carpet - I went for the 'underdogs’. Antonique, the actress turned R&B singer, was one of them: she opted for a low cost choice - Caché is a pretty cheap brand compared to big designers - and she nailed it in my opinion. I recognise this is one of those outfits you either love it or hate it, but I think it was very fresh, being two pieces, the top has a really sexy heart-shape - which I usually don’t like, but in this case it really suited her - I also love the bright orange - even if I’m not sure about the black roses of the prints. All in all, a smart choice. ★★★★

Pharrell Williams in Adidas: it was about time I put some men in my lists - I can’t remember when the last time was - and Pharrell was definitely the perfect one to use as an example of how men also can enter our best dressed list. And talking about unusual choices, he’s THE king - remember the mounty hat of last year? This time he chose Adidas - not a case he designed a collection for the activewear brand recently - in a grey short suit, very elegant, very modern and different, as it’s made of what looks like technical fabric. But the stunning thing about this piece of clothing is that it sort of 'changed’ colour when hit by the flashes of the photographers. Could you make a better choice knowing that you’re going to a red carpet and being shot by dozens of cameras? Just perfect. ★★★★★

Jen Goodall: if you’re confused about who the hell Jen Goodall is, don’t worry, I had the same problem as well. But if you’re a fan of The Black Keys, then you know: she’s the fiancée of Dan Auerbach, the musician from the band, and they are also expecting a baby. How sweet! Most of the times I see pregnant women making very bad choices on how to dress for a big event - Kim Kardashian is always the best example in this case. I don’t know who designed this dress, I just know that I completely fall in love with her, the empire silhouette is the best when you’re expecting a baby and yet there was a glow, a joy in the colour and in the pattern that, together with the styling - love her hair kept so simple - gave the look a boho aura which definitely elevates her as the coolest mom around. Congrats for both the baby and the dress :D ★★★★★

WORST DRESSED

Rita Ora in Prada: I couldn’t believe this dress was designed by Prada. Ora proved what I’ve always said: she’s just a bitch without any bit of taste - even if I used to dance to all of her songs in the clubs in London, ooops. I can’t really understand if she looks more like the Statue of Liberty or a skyscraper, anyway this dress gives me a cheap New York attitude. The worst thing is that you can see in her face that she thinks she’s the coolest girl on the red carpet. SAVE HER! †††+

Joy Villa in Andre Soriano: I told you not everyone went for a sober look, and Joy Villa is the proof of what I’m saying.  She was wearing one of those orange plastic fences they use on the streets when there’s work in progress. And she was naked under it. I just think people should understand they can’t always grab someone’s attention by dressing in this way, and you can’t do it unless you’re Lady Gaga. And GaGa was amazingly dressed this time. Unbelievably tasteless. †††††

Frankie Grande: stars should stop introducing their siblings to the celebrity world, because most of the times they set you for disaster. Ariana Grande is such a cutie, and she always dresses beautifully, and I don’t understand why she doesn’t tell her brother he should stay at home. I don’t have words to describe this awful suit, and I’m telling you, I have some pretty bright-coloured blazers in my closet. But this just looks made of Barbie fabric. Cheap Barbie fabric. †††††

My special mention this time goes to Madonna, who went around showing her ass in everyone’s face, making Lady Gaga stare at her with the most hilarious face EVER. I’ve always loved Madonna, she’s great, one of the greatest performers alive, but I must admit it, she’s becoming pathetic.

And of course my second special mention goes to Rihanna and her Giambattista Valli dress which inspired THOUSANDS of memes on Tumblr. My favourite is the one you can see above. LMFAO

Golden Globe Awards 2015

Yes yes yes, I’m a little bit late and I have no excuse for this, so I’ll tell you the truth: I forgot about it. Unacceptable. But after all, I’m here, and even if after three days, I’m ready to tell you about the BEST and WORST dressed at this year’s Golden Globe Awards. Ready for the star-studded highs and lows?

BEST DRESSED

I have to say it, when it comes to red carpets, I always find one particular look which really wins me over and I think it’s outstanding. Well, it wasn’t so this time. Many nice, simple and elegant outfits but no one which really made me fall in love. Am I becoming too demanding? Maybe.

- Emma Stone in Lanvin: she was not the only one who opted for a top/trousers ensemble, but I loved the red-carpetish vibe to the whole look, even if it wasn’t an evening gown. First of all, the bling bling of the top was really balanced by the black of the trousers, but most of all I loved that touch of something given by the silky black train tied around the waist. Really chic. ★★★+

- Naomi Watts in Gucci: how I love when celebrities go for a bold colour down the red carpet! With this yellow simple dress Naomi Watts really nailed and shone above many others of her colleagues. Loved the length which covers the feet and the belt which perfectly complements the look. ★★★★

- Reese Witherspoon in Calvin Klein Collection: she was my favourite of the night, proving again that she’s wonderful in everything she does. Yes, if you read some others of my red carpet reviews you know I have a crush on her, but I think it’s impossible not to fall in love with her spontaneous style. This gown is the perfect representation of the minimal style of Calvin Klein, which totally suits Reese’s personality. Amazing how blingy yet subtle and elegant is the fabric. Perfect for the night. ★★★★+

WORST DRESSED

- Jennifer Lopez in Zuhair Murad Couture: she’s constantly in my Worst Dressed list, so no surprise she deserved one of the three places again. It really looks like it’s a fusion between a bat and a python. Apart from this, I don’t know if it’s a problem I personally have or it’s really this way, but it seems to me every single gown she chooses becomes extremely vulgar over her. It’s maybe my own prejudice, but I would really like, for once, to see her wearing something basic and very chic, I guess she would extremely beautiful and sexy as well with that perfect body! But this dress, was definitely a miss, I don’t like the shape, I don’t like the colour, I don’t like the fabric. †††

- Lena Dunham in Zac Posen: yes, both Lena Dunham and Zac Posen as well are habitués of my Worst Dressed list. Basically Lena always makes the wrong choice, and Zac Posen always designs for those who are going to make bad choices. So, it’s a perfect couple. Pity that this dress, apart from being horrible in itself - I think the fabric is the most horrendous thing on earth - doesn’t flatter Lena’s body at all. She’s a curvy woman, and she should really find something which suits her body in the right way. Someone help her, please. ††††

- Giuliana Rancic in Maria Lucia Hohan: I’m relieved by the fact that even if I didn’t find anyone who totally caught me among the Best Dressed, at least I definitely found an EXTREMELY Worst Dressed. And what’s more, it’s Giuliana Rancic, which should be the one who really knows about how to dress for a red carpet event. But no, this dress is the proof you can talk about fashion and still dress as a wedding cake. Nothing to say apart from the fact that she was RIDICULOUS. †††††

Met Gala 2015 - Best and Worst Dressed

After a long vacation from my blog - which I swear, it’s finished - I couldn’t help making my come back with a major red carpet event: the Met Gala Ball - not a case if it’s considered the Oscars of fashion.

This year the annual ball gave start to the exhibit ‘China: Through the Looking Glass’ and stars gathered in New York to show the most amazing and bizarre set of dresses you could imagine. In the last year, I must admit, I was bored by how few people dressed badly for such events, but the Met Gala is definitely the occasion in which celebrities show their worst - and I couldn’t be more pleased.

BEST DRESSED

You know I always prefer starting from the three best dressed and leave the juicy part at the end. It was pretty easy to choose, actually: most of the stars opted for dresses which were inspired by Chinese art and tradition, and this translated into costume and embarrassing moments most of the times - though Lady Gaga and Fan Bingbing showed on the red carpet in beautiful maxi kimonos. There were only few who nailed it, and these are my top 3.

Kendall Jenner in Calvin Klein Collection
Every best dressed list needs at least one simple dress - that’s why I chose her instead of Bee Shaffer, beautifully dresses in a stunning burgundy Alexander McQueen gown. And usually the most simple and elegant dresses on the red carpet are by Calvin Klein collection - seriously, I realised there’s at least a CK gown in each one of my red carpet reports. Kendall is young, beautiful, one of the most successful models of the moment, and of course she couldn’t but choose a blingy dress with a sexy twist - the strings on the side showing the right amount of skin. Loved the turtleneck, which balances the naked parts.
★★★+

Sienna Miller in Thakoon
Jacket +  trousers is always a good idea for a very formal red carpet: it never gets old and you’re pretty sure very few people are going to wear it. That’s why I’m obsessed with this fringed ruby red Thakoon ensemble. The black elements make the colour pop and give a sophisticated aura.
★★★★+

Uma Thurman in Atelier Versace
I don’t know if it’s the dress of if it’s Uma, I only know the combination of the two is just OUTSTANDING. She looked like a goddess coming from the sky to show us how mediocre we all are. It’s a pretty traditional choice for a red carpet event, and you all know I don’t really like traditional, but in this case everything is too right not to be noticed: the crisp white lights up the red carpet, the asymmetrical shape flatters the body, the draping gives lightness and elegance. I wanna be Uma Thurman, FML.
★★★★★

WORST DRESSED

All the celebrities condemned to hell and fire - and Sarah Jessica Parker’s outfit was definitely on topic. All the celebrities we love, after all, because they’re brave enough to wear something awful - or maybe they’re just not conscious of what they’re doing. Most of all, all the celebrities who, with their outfits, inspire the web to create the most hilarious memes of the moment. I have four special mentions for the bottom 3 list, the four outfits which were really close to gain this ambitious prize and yet they were surpassed by celebrities who literally throw themselves inside the closet to get dressed for the event: Jamie Bochert who went for a cheap hooker style, Madonna with her obsession in promoting her album, which made her choose an outfit stating REBEL HEART on the skirt (awful) and Grimes, sporting a little LEOPARD dress which you can definitely find at Primark for £9.99 and last but not least, Donatella Versace looking more and more like a a Afghan hound.

Sarah Jessica Parker in Philip Treacy hat and H&M dress
She definitely won, together with Rihanna, the most exhilarating memes of the web for their crazy over-the-top outfits. It’s not even a problem of brand - after all, we had, during the past, celebrities rocking H&M’s dresses, from Natalie Portman to the US first lady Michelle Obama - and the bizarre headpiece she’s wearing could even be defined a piece of art - after all, it’s Philip Treacy’s. No, the problem is just that this black gown is TERRIFYING. It looks like some sort of rubbish bag with litter thrown over it. I love you, Carrie, but I’ve always preferred the other three girls of the bunch.
††††

Kerry Washington in Prada
Kerry is one of the hottest actress now and Prada is one of my favourite brands. It couldn’t go wrong. Unfortunately the stylist who worked on this look managed to create a Frankenstein from scratch. The colour is horrendous on this silhouette, everything is too much, from the embroideries, to the glossy silk, to the maxi bows on the shoulders. For every red carpet event there’s a celebrity looking like a birthday cake, and this time, I’m sorry, it was Kerry.
††††

Zendaya in custom Fausto Puglisi
Even if she didn’t make it to the memes - or at least, I haven’t seen it yet - she even managed to beat SJP. The top part is nice and sexy, but when you get to the skirt, here you have the problems. It’s sort of intimidating and frightening, looking like a UFO with mysterious signs on it and a long tale with patterns reminding of the Backgammon board. It looks heavy, old-fashioned, sort of a nice little dress turned into something suitable for a Halloween party. A cheap Halloween party.
†††††

I say goodbye to you all, but not before sharing with you the most perfect meme human mind has ever created.

Oscar 2015 Red Carpet Looks

The Academy Awards held in Los Angeles two days ago are a great chance to take a break from the fashion weeks of this month - without missing the opportunity of talking about fashion anyway.

A miracle happened, or maybe I missed some looks, but I admit that this time there were no real ‘Worst Dressed’. Too bad, as you all know I love talking about the most embarrassing looks chosen by the stars. But this is it, and let’s start from our winners.

BEST DRESSED

Lupita Nyong'o in Calvin Klein Collection: Lupita always knows how to shine on the red carpet, and after her Oscar last year for '12 Years a Slave’ she definitely set herself as the new celebrity to take a look at on the red carpet. This time she opted for a champagne pearl-emroidered Calvin Klein Collection in which the balance between simplicity of lines and richness of material was the strength of the whole look. She always chooses colours which enhance her skin-tone and she’s got so much class I’m sure she would be stunning in every dress. ★★★★★

Marion Cotillard in Dior Haute Couture: I understand this is one of those dresses you either love or completely hate. It happens that I love it. I’m not sure if I would be of the same opinion if the dress was worn by another person, but it definitely suits Marion’s fresh and hip personality, with a slight bon-ton vibe and a delicate print which adds a little bit of personality to the gown. Very smart choice. ★★★★

Rosamund Pike in Givenchy Haute Couture: I don’t always appreciate red on the red carpet - I mean, wouldn’t be better to choose a colour which contrasts with the red carpet to pop out of the crowd? This dress, though, was just amazingly elegant. The colour, which is a sort of lipstick red, is very strong but at the same time the lace, the soft shapes of the strapless neckline, the slit of the skirt, make it sexier and Rosamund adds a little ethereal twist. ★★★★

WORST DRESSED

Jessica Chastain in Givenchy: my heart aches for putting this dress among the worst, but I had to choose three of them, and as I told you, it was really difficult this time. The gown in itself is a really nice one, you know I love simple shapes, and that’s definitely the case. I don’t quite like the double strap though, it made the overall look very heavy in some way. †

Laura Dern in Alberta Ferretti: it’s not the first time a gown by Alberta Ferretti goes in my personal bottom three of the worst dressed. Again like with Jessica Chastain, the dress in itself was not bad, but in general this metallic fabric doesn’t convince me completely and makes me think of an armour for the Crusades in the Middle Ages. ††

Julianne Moore in Chanel: Julianne is an amazing actress and I’m sure she greatly deserved her Oscar. This dress, though - even if designed by Lagerfeld himself - was the only one I was sure of putting in the worst dressed list. I mean, I can’t even understand why everyone is crazy about it on the Internet - guess because it’s a Chanel gown and people automatically think 'OMG it’s Chanel SO IT’S AMAZING’. No folks, it doesn’t work this way. I hated those decorations on the neckline, on the waistline and at the bottom of the skirt, they looked like burnt fried eggs. Not the worst I’ve seen on red carpets, but definitely the worst for THIS red carpet. If you like it, then, it’s a matter of taste. †††
