This sanguine cloak would be perfect to wear on this snowy Colorado day. There is something peculiarly eerie about a hooded red cardinal cape, especially in the stark white winter. Maybe it’s the idea of being stalked by a hungry wolf?⠀

Mourning Tiara | c. 1880s⠀
——⠀

Jet is the fossilised remains of driftwood. In Britain, the main source is Whitby, in Yorkshire. It became particularly popular in mourning jewellery in the mid 19th century.⠀

The custom of wearing mourning dress was encouraged by Queen Victoria’s prolonged mourning after the death of her husband Albert in 1861. Formal mourning required black crepe or bombazine clothes along with ‘a few trinkets to accentuate the general sombreness of the costume’. This tiara shows that jet or its substitutes was worn at the highest level of society: only those above a certain social class would have had the occasion to wear a tiara. It is interesting that it is made of 'French jet’, a cast glass substitute for jet. As supplies of jet were not sufficient to keep up with the demand, dark cast glass known as 'French jet’ or 'Vauxhall glass’ was often used. (Via @vamuseum

Mourning Court Dress and Veil | c. 1889⠀
——⠀
Empress Sisi was known for her 19” waist achieved with extreme tight lacing, ankle length hair, bizarre beauty regimens and for her inclination to wear a lot of black clothing. She felt dark colors accentuated her alabaster skin and dark eyes and hair and wore black frequently throughout her adult life. However, after her son, Crown Prince Rudolf died in a murder suicide pact with his mistress she wore only black as an act of devotion (she may have worn color on trips to Corfu but that’s up for debate). This court gown worn months after her son’s death doesn’t meet standard mourning “rules” of dress. It is very elaborately trimmed and made of lush, luminous silk satin. But Sisi was never one to follow the rules, especially when it came to her vanity. ⠀

Under-kimono (Nagajuban)| Shōwa Period mid-20th century⠀
——⠀
This man’s under-kimono (nagajuban) is made of dark olive-green crepe silk and decorated with yūzen paste-resist dyeing. The upper part of the back panels is embellished with two skeletons playing go (a traditional Asian board game). In the background of the scene is a delicately painted spider web. The skeletons are rendered in white, black and gray colors, while the background is light gray. Both the figures and their background are painted in softly graded tones. On the lower section of the right back panel a skull is depicted among grasses with a wooden plaque, which bears the inscription “Namu Amida Butsu” (南無阿弥陀仏 “Amitabha Buddha”). In Pure Land Buddhism, the recitation of “Namu Amida Butsu” signifies the speaker’s complete reliance on the compassion of Amitabha Buddha; the chanting of this mantra-like phrase (nenbutsu 念佛 “mindfulness of the Buddha”) is believed to allow rebirth in Amitabha’s Western Pure Land.⠀

A nagajuban is worn beneath the kimono as undergarment, and not usually seen in public—only in informal settings, with family or friends. A nagajuban is usually shorter than the outer kimono, complete with the long kimono sleeves, which are neatly fitted inside the outer kimono’s sleeves. As silk kimono often cannot be washed, the nagajuban helps keep the outer kimono clean by keeping it off the wearer’s skin. Under-kimono are most often silk.⠀

Alexander McQueen | ‘Horn of Plenty’ |c. 2009⠀
———⠀
Continuing with yesterday’s macarbre avian theme, I am reposting one of my favorite pieces from McQueen. ”The Raven” by Poe is one of my must reads every spooky season. I wish someone could read it to me wearing this. ⠀

“A raven was a Romantic symbol of death. It’s an item that’s very melancholic but also very romantic at the same time. It came from a collection called The Horn of Plenty. And The Horn of Plenty was a collection that was very much inspired by the 1950s haute couture. And you even see the silhouette here; you see the very nipped-in waist, the huge shoulders. McQueen loved a very hard shoulder and a very small waist. So even in this particular garment, even though it seems so extreme, he’s still referencing 1950s couture. He’s still playing with the proportions that he loved so much.⠀
And feathers play such an important role in McQueen’s work. He lovedy birds. And feathers was a material that he would revisit again and again in his work.” - Andrew Bolton⠀

“It is important to look at death because it is a part of life. It is a sad thing, melancholy but romantic at the same time. It is the end of a cycle—everything has to end. The cycle of life is positive because it gives room for new things.” - Alexander McQueen⠀

This jacket from McQueen’s fourth collection, was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. The collection also included references to roadkill and illustrations of M. C. Escher. The sharp shoulders, exaggerated lapels, and the cloud of printed black swallows on an orange background make for the perfectly chic, macabre jacket. ⠀

Elsa Schiaparelli with Salvador Dalí | ‘The Skeleton Dress’ | c. 1938⠀
——⠀
To many contemporaries the sinister black skeleton evening dress with its padded representations of human bones was an outrage - an offence against good taste. Although otherwise in elegant harmony with the prevailing lines of late 1930s evening wear, the skeleton dress is so constricted that it became a second skin and the imitation anatomy sat defiantly proud of the fine matt silk surface. Schiaparelli exaggerated the usually delicate trapunto quilting technique to make enormous ‘bones’ - the design was stitched in outline through two layers of fabric, then cotton wadding inserted through the back to bring the design into relief on the front. The shoulder seams and right side are closed by bold plastic zips. (Via @vamuseum Museum No. T.394&A-1974)⠀

Worth designed this fancy dress costume “Infanta Margarita after Velazquez” for Ms. Kate Brice. She wore it to the Bradley-Martin Ball in 1897. She ordered it by telegram last minute after deciding to attend the ball. The house of Worth made it in 24 hours, with out any sacrifice to quality, so that it could be shipped in time. ⠀

——⠀
I decided to force myself get into the Halloween Ooky Spooky Spirit after a car accident (no one was hurt) and then a bout of bronchitis this past week. So I am doing a little ‘13 Days of Halloween’ thing to cheer me up. First up is one of Elphaba’s costumes by Susan Hilferty. She was inspired by William Wallace Denslow’s illustrations to Frank Baum’s 1900 children’s novel The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. I saw the OBC of “Wicked” on a theater trip to NY when as a young teen and I was forever in love musical theater since then. What’s your favorite musical?
