Reception Dress | 1888⠀ ———⠀ This second bustle era reception or dinner dress features fine black Chantilly lace draped over blush pink satin. The shoulder seams are decorated with jet epaulettes on a slightly puffed sleeve. ⠀ ⠀ (@museemccord item no. Mourning Tiara | c. 1880s⠀ ——⠀ ⠀ Jet is the fossilised remains of driftwood. In Britain, the main source is Whitby, in Yorkshire. It became particularly popular in mourning jewellery in the mid 19th century.⠀ ⠀ The custom of wearing mourning dress was encouraged by Queen Victoria’s prolonged mourning after the death of her husband Albert in 1861. Formal mourning required black crepe or bombazine clothes along with ‘a few trinkets to accentuate the general sombreness of the costume’. This tiara shows that jet or its substitutes was worn at the highest level of society: only those above a certain social class would have had the occasion to wear a tiara. It is interesting that it is made of 'French jet’, a cast glass substitute for jet. As supplies of jet were not sufficient to keep up with the demand, dark cast glass known as 'French jet’ or 'Vauxhall glass’ was often used. Mourning Court Dress and Veil | c. 1889⠀ ——⠀ Empress Sisi was known for her 19” waist achieved with extreme tight lacing, ankle length hair, bizarre beauty regimens and for her inclination to wear a lot of black clothing. She felt dark colors accentuated her alabaster skin and dark eyes and hair and wore black frequently throughout her adult life. However, after her son, Crown Prince Rudolf died in a murder suicide pact with his mistress she wore only black as an act of devotion (she may have worn color on trips to Corfu but that’s up for debate). This court gown worn months after her son’s death doesn’t meet standard mourning “rules” of dress. It is very elaborately trimmed and made of lush, luminous silk satin. But Sisi was never one to follow the rules, especially when it came to her vanity. ⠀ ——⠀ #13daysofhalloween #fashion #history #art #dress #style #black #mourning #victorian #victorianfashion #mode #moda #empresssisi #empresselizabeth #austria #bavaria #halloween #silk https://www.instagram.com/p/B4C_TD2g3qL/?igshid=1ehwobs8lmvix
House of Worth | ‘Infanta Margarita after Velazquez’ Fancy Dress | c.1897⠀⠀ ——⠀⠀ Worth designed this fancy dress costume “Infanta Margarita after Velazquez” for Ms. Kate Brice. She wore it to the Bradley-Martin Ball in 1897. She ordered it by telegram last minute after deciding to attend the ball. The house of Worth made it in 24 hours, with out any sacrifice to quality, so that it could be shipped in time. ⠀ ⠀ ➡️Swipe to see Ms. Brice in the gown after a night of dancing and the inspiration painting by Velasquez.⠀ ⠀ (@ Reference Number 42.146.8A-B)⠀ ——⠀⠀ #13daysofhalloween #fashion #style #design #glamour #vintagefashion #art #vintage #historicfashion #costume #couture #halloweencostume #fancydress #halloween #velazquez #infantamargarita #victorianfashion #victorian #houseofworth #charlesfrederickworth https://www.instagram.com/p/B3zb-HNgG_m/?igshid=1ng74palb14ha
Afternoon Dress | c. 1883⠀ ——⠀ This dress was conceived as the second bustle period was beginning to emerge. The very brief époque between 1880-1884 created some awkward silhouettes as the curaiss bodice was still very much worn while the bustle was burgeoning on the back. Sometimes creating what can only be described as low, lusciously fabricated lumps that didn’t flatter. This sumptuous, aubergine example is definitely an instance where the proportions of the conflicting designs came to fruition in harmony. ⠀ ⠀ (@themintmuseum 2010.37a-c)⠀ ——⠀ #fashion #dress #victorianfashion #victorian #bustle #glamour #beauty #ootd #curaissbody #style #design #costume #purple #aubergine# #color #art #mode #moda #velvet #silk #mintmuseum #museum https://www.instagram.com/p/B3R3-xTg8Oh/?igshid=1j5hq2h61q49n
It’s done! My 2020 project ❤️ Okay I admit, the hat is still missing and I want to add some boning to the jacket. I might do another petticoat and a proper corset (right now I’m wearing bra+ underbust BUT it is wearable and it’s the thing that took the most time to finish. Normally I rush things because I want something new for an upcoming event. This time I just wanted to do a bustle dress. (And I have no clue where to wear it ) I did a lot of handsewing and tried to make sure that there are no visible machine seams on the outside. Historical accuracy was not my goal, but I had 1880s in mind as inspiration and if I can trust my limited knowledge I’d say it’s at least historical adequate Opinions? ✂️ Patterns used: Jacket - Burda 7880 (highly modified front part and sleeves) Underskirt - Truly Victorian TV261 Apron and Bustle - Truly Victorian TV365 Corset - Cosplay McCalls Shapeshifter by @anachronisminaction ___________ #bustle #bustledress #victoriana #victoriandress #vintageaesthetic #victorianfashion #steampunk #historicalsewing #historical #diy #trulyvictorian #burda #TV261 #TV365 #Burda7880 #apron #seamstress #tailor #handmade #steampunkfashion #costube #handsewing #burdahistory https://www.instagram.com/p/CIdoZfpDRgd/?igshid=179cftpncgqs5
Silhouette - Does my butt look big in this? - GOOD! There’s a special kind of elegance about bustle dresses. We often look at past fashions wondering: why the tell did they dress like this? And I’m honestly looking forward to find out at what we’re gonna look the same way when it comes to today’s fashion. (My best guess at the moment are eyebrows and bare ankles during winter) ➡️ What do you think will be mocked about today’s fashion in the future? ⬅️ ___________ #silhouette #bustle #bustledress #historicallyadequate #historical #historicaldress #historicalsewing #victoriana #victoriandress #victorianfashion #sewing #costume #historicalcostume #costumer (hier: Ruhrgebiet) https://www.instagram.com/p/CJvReP9Dsd-/?igshid=w6v8abpnu0zy
Cosplaying Violet Baudelaire (2004 Lemony Snicket’s A Series of Unfortunate Events)
Cosplay for me usually involves Cosplaying Characters that don’t look like me at all. I usually tend to do Transformation based Makeup and can spend Hours doing so.
Ever since I was a Kid I fell in love with Violet’s Character. There was something badass about her Character that I adored. Also adored her Costume and have wanted to own it for so long.
Another reason for Cosplaying her and why I’m glad is: 1) We are similar enough in appearance that I don’t have to do much Makeup. 2) Same Height and Hair. 3) Plus I need to own her badass Gown.
I’ve spent over 5.5 Months on her, but can’t wait to go back to her shortly.
(WIP) Victorian/Edwardian Violet Baudelaire Boots - WIP 1 (I will take some proper Archive Photographs, but for now I’m settling for WIP Photographs.) Here are some WIP Photographs of the Victorian/Edwardian Boots.
Violet’s Boots are a custom build, after seeing actual Photos of hers. I still have a lot of work to do on these. The bars need to be made smaller too, as well as other parts being made and done on them.
(WIP) Alternative Black Organza Puffy Ribbon Sleeves - Comparison (I will take some proper Archive Photographs, but for now I’m settling for WIP Photographs.) Here are some WIP Photographs of the Alternative Black Organza Puffy Ribbon Sleeves I made for Violet.
For Books 4-13 and any Video Game, Book, Deleted or Alternative Scenes I wanted to Photograph etc, I wanted a set of Alternative Sleeves. So people would notice that I’m not Cosplaying the main Canon Film Violet Version, but instead Alternative Scenes and moments.
Violet has a Black set of Organza Sleeves for certain shots in the Reptile Room section of the Film, but also in some odd Publicity Material. Also in the Video Game. It is a very blink and you’ll miss it moment.
