Philip Treacy for Alexander Mcqueen | ‘Chinese Garden’ | 2005⠀

Treacy’s work, for all its originality, is also rooted in his deep knowledge of the history of art, fashion, and design. This Chinese garden refers to the popularity of Chinoiserie in the eighteenth century and to the 1770s fashion for elaborate landscapes constructed in the topography of a woman’s heroically sculpted hair. For his high-style coronet, Treacy has cannibalized the decorative shadowboxes of intricately cut-worked cork purchased in Asia and rearranged them into his own Orientalist fantasy. Continuing with yesterday’s macarbre avian theme, I am reposting one of my favorite pieces from McQueen. ”The Raven” by Poe is one of my must reads every spooky season. I wish someone could read it to me wearing this. ⠀

“A raven was a Romantic symbol of death. It’s an item that’s very melancholic but also very romantic at the same time. It came from a collection called The Horn of Plenty. And The Horn of Plenty was a collection that was very much inspired by the 1950s haute couture. And you even see the silhouette here; you see the very nipped-in waist, the huge shoulders. McQueen loved a very hard shoulder and a very small waist. So even in this particular garment, even though it seems so extreme, he’s still referencing 1950s couture. He’s still playing with the proportions that he loved so much.⠀
And feathers play such an important role in McQueen’s work. He lovedy birds. And feathers was a material that he would revisit again and again in his work.” - Andrew Bolton⠀

This jacket from McQueen’s fourth collection, was inspired by Alfred Hitchcock’s “The Birds”. The collection also included references to roadkill and illustrations of M. C. Escher. The sharp shoulders, exaggerated lapels, and the cloud of printed black swallows on an orange background make for the perfectly chic, macabre jacket. ⠀

The 30 cm high ‘Armadillo’ boot from Plato’s Atlantis is among McQueen’s most notable footwear creations. The design is not a conventional shoe, but appears as part of the wearer, elongating and extending the leg and combining a claw-like menace with the beauty of a ballerina’s en pointe.⠀

The majority of the ‘Armadillos’ were show only pieces, meaning that they were not intended to be commercially produced, though some were bought by particularly loyal clients. Each ‘Armadillo’ boot was hand carved from wood. The lining and the upper were lasted individually and therefore required four zips (two for the lining and two for the upper) to allow access for the foot. Although challenging to wear because of its height and weight, a ‘build out’, or bulge, above the toes enables the wearer to lift the boot more easily when walking.⠀

Fashion critic Sarah Mower wrote of the show models, ‘Their gangly legs sunk in grotesque shoes that looked like the armoured heads of a fantastical breed of antediluvian sea monster’. (Via @vamuseum)⠀
