2 hours and a trip to the flower store later, Fred stood confidently waiting outside of Y/n’s address. He went over the plan in his head for the date. Go for drinks and maybe catch one of those muggle movies that Y/n always seemed to speak about. He took a deep breath and reached out his fist to knock on the door, but someone beat him to it.

The door opened quickly, and Y/n hurried out, a scene of chaos sounding behind her.

“Hi.” She panted as she leaned against the door as if ensuring it was closed. Fred smiled but his eyebrows furrowed with confusion. “Sorry family is a bit hectic today. Well, every day.” She corrected, blowing a strand piece of hair from her face. Fred nodded knowing the feeling of a crazy family, but he was usually the cause of the craziness, so he couldn’t relate too much. “Aw Fred are those for me?”

Y/n’s eyes drifted to the bouquet in Fred’s slightly sweaty hands. Fred nodded with a smile as he took the moment to appreciate how gorgeous his date looked. Y/n’s hair was styled up and she wore a dress that was not too casual nor too formal, it fit her perfectly and Fred’s eyes may have lingered a little too long on it.

“Um Fred?” Y/n bent down so Fred’s eyes would meet hers and as he realised he’d been staring at her body, he stammered and apologised. “It’s okay. I didn’t fit into this dress for it to not be appreciated.” She winked, and Fred’s throat ran dry, he admired her boldness. But Y/n’s coy expression soon turned to deep thought as she looked at the flowers. “Um, I’ll be right back. Just got to put these in a vase.” She gestured with the flowers, her smile still glowing even though she looked more distressed at re-entering the house. She took a deep exaggerated breath and opened the door.

Fred tried to see inside as a loud scream sounded followed by laughter. A woman was yelling after a crash sounded. Fred almost felt guilt for his own family, knowing that him and George had been just as mischievous if not more so than the boys who ran past the window before pressing their faces against it to better see outside. Fred shuffled his feet as they realised they were watching him.

“Oi you two!”

The two young boys turned sharply around, and Fred could just see Y/n standing behind them, her hands on her hips. The boys quickly ran from the window as Y/n reappeared at the door, looking slightly dishevelled.

“Sorry.” Y/n fixed her hair up with an apologetic grimace. Fred just laughed.

“Brothers?”

“Yeah. They’re little – monsters.” Y/n saved herself from swearing with a smirk as she went to close the door, presumably before her brothers could run outside but just before it swung shut, a woman’s voice yelled from upstairs.

“Y/n? Who’s at the door?”

“No one Mum, just a friend.” Y/n yelled back, quickly shutting the door before more questions could be yelled. “Sorry, it’s just if I told her you were my date, we’d never get out of here.” Y/n laughed but Fred could tell she was serious.

“Don’t apologise, I know what having a big family is like and having a Mum that wants to know the details of your life.” Fred noted, his smirk never fading as Y/n’s own rose on her lips. “Shall we get going?” Fred held out his hand for Y/n to take which she happily did. They made their way down to their date location, their hands swinging between them as they discussed the ups and downs of families. Fred was careful on what he said, if he said one thing such as the fact that they didn’t need to argue over dishes because magic did all the chores then he would be screwed, and Y/n would be nothing but confused.

At the same time, Fred tried his best to act as any muggle would which whilst wasn’t difficult, he felt as if it was. He felt like he was tiptoeing on each and every subject, scared that something would trick him out. What was worse was that Y/n seemed to notice.

“Are you sure you’re alright?”

“Oh yeah, I’m fine.” He tried his best to feel relaxed, but the truth was he’d never dated a muggle before, witches yes, muggleborns yes but not someone who didn’t have a clue about the whole other side of her world. Fred had thought briefly about telling her, about ripping off the band-aid but he couldn’t, not here at least. Y/n accepted his answer and pushed on with the conversation.

“You know, I feel like I hardly know much about you. Tell me something that I couldn’t guess.”

Fred had to stop himself from scoffing a laugh and instead took a breath whilst Y/n smiled expectantly. The truth was the she didn’t know a lot about him and it wasn’t just due to the short amount of time in which they had known each other. “Um, well=” He panicked, thinking of the first thing that came into his mind. “I’m really into magic.” Fred cringed whilst internally screaming at himself.

Y/n’s eyes widened a little in surprise but her soft smile never faded. “Like card tricks?” She was trying to laugh which Fred found adorable and he was just glad she hadn’t thought of wand waving but instead the muggle kind. Fred nodded. “Well, you’re right.” He furrowed his eyebrows down, his heart beating rapidly, suspecting that at any moment he was going to be caught out. “I wouldn’t have guessed that.” Y/n laughed, and Fred sighed in relief before joining in.

He also told her about the pranks that he loved to pull with George and the thrill he got from seeing someone laugh because of him. Y/n told him in return about how she only worked at the post office to get by and was hoping one day to be (your/dream/job). She hated the work, but she loved interacting with people of all kinds and feeling like she was helping them in same way. Fred thought she was the most amazing person he had ever met, and he couldn’t help but stare at her beauty.

“What?” Y/n nervously tucked a hair behind her ear and smiled bashfully under Fred’s stare. He immediately shook his head, realising he’d been staring.

“Nothing. It’s just- has anyone told you how amazing you are?” He rested his chin on his hand as his elbow was propped up on the table. Y/n blushed a deep scarlet colour and meet his sweet gaze, a small bit of surprise behind her expression. She just smiled and shook her head. “Well you are.”

Fred could have talked to Y/n all night, smiling and laughing, listening to her stories and she listening to his. They wanted to keep talking so much in fact that they decided to skip the movie and just walk around the streets of London for a while. Their hands intertwined again, and Fred smiled to himself as he felt a jolt of happiness in his stomach, something he didn’t feel with most of the girls he had dated. Y/n’s hand fit perfectly in his, he thought as he stroked his thumb across her hand. He could only hope that Y/n felt the same way.

They came to a stop by a public garden. Y/n smiled at the flowers that bloomed; roses of all different colours, daisies, sunflowers which were only visible by the array of fairy lights that surrounded the garden. It felt magical. There was short silence only broken by the rush of water pouring from the fountain.

“It’s beautiful isn’t it?”

Fred nodded, trying hard to focus on the scenery before him rather than the girl next to him but he failed. His gaze drifted to meet hers and was surprised to see her already smiling at him.

“Fred,” She looked nervous almost. “I know we haven’t known each other that long but it feels like we have. I know it sounds stupid-.”

“No.” Fred was quick to dismiss her worries because he felt the same. Y/n smiled, her lips quirking as she bit her lip. “it’s not stupid.”

They inched closer together, the strangely near-empty streets of London fading from their view. Fred’s hand came to rest on her jaw ready to pull her in close, so their lips could finally meet. Y/n’s eyes closed, a smile edging on her lips. And then Fred felt the pot of guilt for lying bubble over inside his mind, he paused. Y/n opened her eyes slowly to see what was wrong.

“Fred-?”

“I’m sorry, I just-.” He had to tell her, Fred could stand lying to many people for the sake of a joke, but he just couldn’t lie to Y/n, he couldn’t. “I have to tell you something.”

Y/n looked at him with concern, hoping that this was just a joke, one that Fred was so famous for pulling in his stories. “What is it?” She could almost sense the inner conflict within him, the way his mind was working faster than he could process to make a decision.

Fred thought to himself that maybe he was just self-sabotaging another relationship, one that actually had potential to be more, to be what his siblings had – what he wanted. His distracted gaze met Y/n’s and he swallowed the words that had been on the edge of his tongue. “Just how much I want to kiss you right now.” He passed his nerves off as a confident smile, hoping that Y/n didn’t notice. And if she did, then she did a good job of pretending she hadn’t.

“Well I’m not going to complain.” Y/n’s smile brightened before turning into more of a smirk and Fred couldn’t help himself anymore as he looked down to her lips. He pushed all the feelings and conflict away and just focused on closing the gap between himself and Y/n.

When their lips met, it was like someone had set off a round of fireworks in his stomach. Y/n gasped a little into the kiss before smiling and kissing back. One of her hands rested at the back of his neck whilst his free hand went to her waist, pulling her in impossibly closer. They pulled back after a short while and before they both got carried away. Both wore bright grins as they rested their foreheads against each other’s.

Fred soon offered to walk her home and she grinned as she nodded. Their hands joining were almost automatic now as they walked the short distance to Y/n’s house. The walk back was full of idle chatter and coy glances, neither of them wanting the night to end and feeling like teenagers.

They stopped at the door. Y/n still wearing a large smile as she turned to Fred, her hand disconnecting from his. Fred almost pouted at the loss of her warm hand in his.

“Thank you for tonight. I had fun.”

“Me too.” Fred smirked, his hands slipping into his pocket. “I’m so glad I found you.” He said the words with utter confidence and sweetness because they were nothing but the truth. Y/n seemed surprised, but she didn’t falter instead moving in closer towards Fred and kissing his lips again.

“I am too.” Y/n pulled back with a glare, but it wasn’t aimed at Fred, it was aimed towards the front window. “I better go. I’ll see you soon?” She added hopefully, turning her attention back to Fred.

“You can count on it.” He winked and quickly held her hand just, so he could kiss it. Y/n sighed contently before going to open the door. Fred went to walk away with one last smirk but before he could even reach the stairs, he heard, “Y/n kissed him!”. He laughed knowing it was her little brothers and smiling as he heard Y/n yell at them. He could only imagine what his own family would be like once he told them about Y/n and how happy they would be for him.

Fred gave a dramatic sigh and rested his chin on his hand. He looked out of the store window, watching people pass as George closed the door and turned the sign around to let passers-by that they were closed for the evening. He walked back to notice his brother heaving another sigh. George rolled his eyes.

“Mate, come on. I’ve never seen you this hung up on a girl before let alone one you’ve just met.”

“Yeah well. She’s different.

“You spoke to her for like 5 minutes.” George laughed as he started to do inventory. Fred walked with him around the shop, scribbling notes on a piece of parchment.

“Yeah but it was enough time to know that she’s amazing.” Fred frowned again, knowing that he’d probably never meet her again was a sad thought. George stared at Fred, his eyes narrowed in suspiciously.

“You haven’t been ‘testing’ that love potion again have you?” George asked. Fred shook his head.

“No. And that was one time. And it was your fault!” Fred reminded his twin gently. George just smirked and nodded, unconvinced. He remembered the time he had gotten revenge on his brother after he’d dyed George’s hair bright green by making one of their friends give Fred a drink doused with love potion. He’d chased after the girl for about 1 hour (as it had been a week test version), he’d also been very angry with a very amused George.

Fred spoke some more about the mysterious Y/n as they finished up inventory. George rolled his eyes again and got ready to interrupt.

“Look, you know what Mum would say about all of this?”

“That fate would find a way if it was meant to be?” Fred shrugged with an irritated look.

“Exactly. Now, stop complaining and gushing over what’s her name and let things be.” George had never felt wise but in that moment, he felt rather proud of himself. Fred reluctantly nodded but his expression tensed as George’s words processed.

“I haven’t gushed over her. And her name is Y/n.” Fred said matter-of-factly. George just smirked and raised an eyebrow before making his way upstairs to get some rest.

The rain poured down hard on the streets of London. People rushing under covers and bus stops. Loud traffic beeped its way through the streets. Fred hated muggle London. He hated it even more when he was sent to the muggle post office because George just couldn’t find the product they needed anywhere else but from a muggle supplier. A fact that Fred doubted highly because they had magic at their fingertips meaning anything was possible. George had also asked Fred to go with a smirk and a knowing look, he knew there was something else going on, but Fred was too tired and annoyed to figure it out.

He shook of the rain as he entered the warmth of the post office. Normally at a post office, he’d expect owls around every corner, but muggles had a strange way of communicating, insisting to do it themselves through a system.

There was a fairly large sized queue for the desk, so Fred waited. He thought about how much more efficient owl post was, there was no complaints (unless it had been errol delivering something) and there was much less talking about sending something, plus it didn’t cost any money. Fred rolled his eyes as someone slowly counted out there change at the window. Whilst it didn’t take too long for the queue to go down in size, the motion of waiting with the bonus of being soaked to his skin from the rain had pushed him into annoyance.

“Next please.”

Fred sighed in relief as he finally made his way to the woman behind the desk. “Hi, I have to-“ Fred looked up and felt surprise cloud his annoyance.

“Oh hi.” The sweet voice he had been longing to hear again entered his ears.

It was Y/n. Y/n with the beautiful, warm (y/e/c) eyes. Upon seeing her, Fred felt himself smile for the first time that day.

“Hi.” He replied in a voice filled with disbelief that this was real. “What are you doing here?”

“I work here.” Y/n said clearly with a small giggle as she tapped her name badge. Fred nodded with a tinge of embarrassment.

“Right. Right.” He’d almost forgotten where he was and what he was doing. “I have to pick up this parcel.” He handed Y/n the letter, suddenly feeling a lot warmer even though his clothes still stuck to his skin.

“Okay.” Y/n read the letter and disappeared for a second, coming back a moment later with the parcel and her lovely smile. “Here you go.” Fred thanked her, and they smiled at each other for a few moments before someone cleared their throat loudly behind them. Fred resisted turning to glare at the person behind him.

“I best go.” Fred didn’t want to leave but he didn’t want to wait and see if someone would start a fight either, so he left. He wasn’t more than 4 steps away when Y/n yelled out.

“Wait!” So, he did. Y/n apologised to the customer, knowing it went against staff protocol, but she didn’t want to miss the opportunity. “I’m just about to go on my break. Do you want to grab coffee or something?” Y/n smiled hopefully, and Fred would be a fool to turn her down, so he nodded.

He waited in a comfy armchair whilst Y/n finished. It wasn’t long before she came out from behind the desk and pulled him up by the hand. She flashed him a smile as she walked out of the post office with Fred in tow.

They ran through the rain to a small coffee shop which Y/n said was one of her favourites. Fred had never tried coffee before, it wasn’t that he hadn’t heard of it – he just didn’t get the appeal, but he surprised himself as he took an instant liking to it. Y/n settled for a hot chocolate instead saying that it was a much better choice of drink in her opinion.

They talked for the whole half an hour of her break. It was easy to talk to Y/n – she was funny, friendly and sweet. Fred told her about himself (minus the fact that he was a wizard of course) and she returned the conversation. Every little thing he learnt about her made him like Y/n even more. And Fred doubted whether he would ever get enough of seeing her smile because it was truly gorgeous.

As they parted so Y/n return to work, they did so hesitantly. Neither wanted to stop speaking.

“It was really nice speaking to you Fred.” Y/n smiled hopefully and as Fred returned the kind words, she leaned in and boldly kissed his cheek. Her lips were warm on his still rather cold skin. Fred smirked as she pulled back, a red blush painting her cheeks. “Funny how we keep running into each other, huh?”

“Yeah it is.” Except Fred didn’t think that their meeting today was exactly coincidental. “Maybe we should do it again, sometime.” Fred wasn’t hesitant in his words, Y/n smiled widely and nodded. She quickly scribbled on a note and passed it to him.

“It’s my address in case you ever want to write to me. Maybe we can arrange a second date.” Y/n slyly added with a coy smile. Fred smirked wider with a nod before faltering briefly at her words.

“Wait, this was a date?” Fred’s eyebrows furrowed.

“Oh well, only if you want it to be.” Y/n looked more nervous as she spoke, her gaze flitting to anywhere but Fred. He thought on it for a moment and then shook his head. Y/n’s face fell.

“No. I just mean if it’s a first date – you’ll know it’s a first date. Also, it won’t be as rushed.” Fred hoped he sounded as smooth as he intended. Y/n’s smile returned to her face and it was enough to tell him that he was doing okay.

“Okay then, I expect an amazing first date Fred Weasley.” Y/n said boldly. Fred was slightly taken aback but continued smirking at her as flirtatiously as he could. She winked before exiting the small coffee shop. Fred started after her amazed at Y/n’s beauty in every sense of the word. As he walked away he couldn’t wipe the smile off of his face even as the rain continued to lash onto his skin and even as he thought about how George must have somehow planned this. And Fred had every intent of questioning his brother, not knowing whether he wanted to hit George or hug him. He found a safe space away from prying muggle eyes and apparated home, still with a smile plastered on his face and the feel of Y/n’s lips ghosting on his cheek.

———-

George didn’t apologise or make an excuses for himself. He admitted that he’d co-ordinated the meet up perfectly and that he was only giving his twin the kick he needed to stop pining over Y/n and make something more of his crush.

Fred felt powered to prove to George that he was perfectly capable of making a move, so he wrote to Y/n, ignoring his slightly shaking his hand as he wrote. He posted it the muggle way through a strange red box and it was only then that the nerves of what he had just done set in. He’d just asked Y/n on a date, he rethought his wording and knew he sounded stupid, desperate and in a weird way overly confident from his need to prove himself. He peered back into the slit in the red box and peered inside but there was nothing to see except pitch black. He looked for an opening, he even considered smashing the stupid muggle contraption before realising it was no use, the letter was impossible to reach and by tomorrow would be on its way to Y/n who would probably laugh and throw it away. Fred had never felt worse about himself and he didn’t know why.

He was normally fine flirting with girls and asking them out but there seemed to be something different about Y/n and it wasn’t just the fact that she was a muggle.

Fred waited for a reply and George as usual mocked his distant stares out of doorways as if willing Y/n’s reply to magically appear. And then Fred realised that he hadn’t given her an address to write to and in addition to that he was sure that muggle post didn’t typically come to Diagon alley. Fred had a new plan, running to the muggle post office and asking if any letters had been sent. He arrived sweating from nerves but mainly from the exhaustion of actual running. He calmed himself down not wanting to attract attention to himself.

The queue wasn’t long, consisting of one or two people before it reached Fred. He stood next in line ready to chase down the probably non-existent letter that would be addressed to him and then he heard a voice, a familiar voice that made Fred’s heart race ten times faster.

“Fred? What are you doing here?”

He turned around, coming face to face with Y/n dressed in her uniform from the other day. She wore a smile that put the sun to shame, it was that bright whilst Fred stammered like an idiot because he’d forgotten that she works here and now he would look like a fool demanding a letter with his name. Unless-

“I-I was just thinking that I never gave you an address to write to and I wasn’t sure if you got my letter but-.”

“I did.” Y/n’s eyes glimmered with a happiness as she blushed and tucked her hair behind her ear. Fred smiled back.

“I realised you couldn’t respond to my question, so I thought maybe you’d written to me without an address.” Fred felt like he wasn’t making sense and neither it seemed did Y/n who tilted her head in confusion.

“Why would I do that? Then you’d never know my answer was yes.”

“I thought that- wait,” Y/n smirked as Fred processed her words. “Yes?”

“Yes.”

“Holy shit.” Fred muttered the curse under his breath, but Y/n caught it and giggled.

“Soooo…. Are you free tonight?” Y/n’s smile crooked to one side cutely as she swung on the balls of her feet nervously.

“Yeah.”  Fred nodded a bit too quickly, his eyes wide and gleaming with excitement. Y/n smiled, kissed his cheek and told him what time she got off of work. “Great! I’ll pick you up at 6?”

Y/n nodded before she was called away by her colleague and with a grimace she left but not before flirtatiously touching Fred’s arm with a smile that held promises of seeing him later.
