Laura wound the length of black silk around her palm, released it, then wound it up again. He was late. He’d never been late before. She chewed her lip, continuing to fiddle with the fabric until, with a frustrated huff, she began to pace around the coffee table.
Maybe he’d texted her?
No. No messages—not from him or anyone else.
Maybe he’d just mixed up the time. Or the day. Or the apartment. Or the city. Completely plausible. It wasn’t as though he might be sitting somewhere, regretting that he’d agreed to her idea. Or regretting that he’d said he loved her so soon into their relationship. God, that wasn’t really happening, was it?
“Calm down!” she hissed to herself before taking a deep breath in. Alistair wouldn’t do that to her—he wouldn’t do that to anyone. And it wasn’t as though she’d proposed something scandalous. Laura looked down at the silk in her hands and smiled. He’d seemed interested in the idea when she’d first brought it up. Yes. He was just running late. Nothing to be worried about. Nothing to—
She all but screamed when someone knocked on the front door. Leaving the silk behind, she leapt towards the sound, cursing when her shin knocked against the side of the coffee table.
“I’m coming!” she yelled, vaulting over the couch and landing haphazardly on one and a half feet. “Hold on!” Her fingers fumbled with the set of locks and latches until, finally, the door swung open.
Alistair stood panting on the other side. His gym bag was slung over one shoulder and water dripped from his hair.
“Bull kept messing around.” He leaned against the door frame, still gasping for breath. “Coach made us stay. Phone died. Ran here. Didn’t want you to wor—”
