man i used to think alphys was badly written but i was wrong as hell. makes sense, as i didn’t have a clear grasp on what a morally grey character was back then… but almost the entire main undertale cast is morally grey… and i have been head over heels for these characters for nearly three years SHSJHSH anyway
alphys is well-written and underrated change my mind. i wouldn’t say that she’s selfish.. but she is not altruistic. her primary drive is to be accepted, and she believes she can achieve that by proving herself to others i.e. creating mettaton to impress asgore, going on with the determination experiments, lying to undyne that anime is real. she strives to feel worth something to others so she can feel worth something to herself. alphys believes that there’s nothing for people to look forward to in the individual she actually is, so good deeds or remarkable breakthroughs occur to her as covers. the thing is, performing acts of service is not among her genuine motivations, and being a clumsy fick she really just can’t effectively do any. the clearest, most deliberate example is her getting mettaton to act like he wants to cap your ass so she can act like she’s saving it from his antics, which after failing to keep up, she admits to have done it for the sole purpose of “being useful”.
needless to say, her arc shouldn’t be the main reason she’s unpopular in the fandom. i’m dead certain that it’s her neurosis and her relentless rambling, as it’s just conventionally appalling but i personally love her for that. i’m not one to have favorites often, but alphys has left a lasting impression on me ever since i looked into her character more. i’ll forever be in awe with the amount of care that went into weaving the complexity of undertale’s characters

I finally stopped fretting over this one and decided to post it. It started out as a funny crossover idea and then sort of turned into something sweet. If I had to title it, it would probably be “By the Light of the Echo Flowers” or something like that.
