Women and their bodies are battlegrounds for society’s debates over moral and ideological values-whether that’s about women’s appearance and behaviour, their sexual activity or even clothes and alcohol consumption.”

Whether it’s because of the rise of fascism or right wing populism, women and pregnant peoples’ reproductive rights are coming under fire across the world.

In ‘Abortion Wars’, Judith Orr charts the history of the struggle for bodily autonomy across the UK and the World. This is a book about how far we’ve come and how far we still have to go. Part of the book is devoted to first hand accounts of the struggle for abortion rights in Northern Ireland, U.S.A and Korea. This isn’t just a book but an instruction manual for liberation.

“A danger from which there is no escape is the penalty for felling the noble sacred tree”

Another book I read while doing some research!  Christine Zucchelli has written a wonderful book about trees in Ireland and their connections to religion, witchcraft and mythology. She also delves into superstitions, fairies and holy wells. The book is well researched and referenced and it’s clear that Zucchelli has taken the time to listen to local people and their stories.

“All Eli had to do was smile. All Victor had to do was lie. Both proved frighteningly effective.”

“But as the world itself will tell you, something put in motion will not stop.”

“But just for a moment, I close my eyes, lean into his touch, and remember what it was like when it was just the two of us against the night.”
