What really was impressive about Doukyuusei were not Chiaki Nakamura’s beautiful and detailed backgrounds but the storyboard which brought them alive. Director was the same as in the Mawaru Penguindrum and he clearly has found great chemistry with Nakamura.

Cityscape and the rooms feel alive and used just like in Nakamura’s previous works. She also has history of working with legendary. Shichiro Kobayashi.

Kyoto Animations background team has been awesome from way back when Aka-chan to Boku was made and had KyoAni BG’s in number of episodes. Here’s some backgrounds from the anime Air. Not only is the brush work from early digital era way ahead of its time, but the layouts and storyboard are so well planned that it supports the bg artists in creating appealing pictures.

Yoshihara Shunichiro is back in business with his old team. People have been asking me why Kabaneri of the Iron Fortress looks like Shingeki no Kyojin. Well there is more to it than just being from the same animation studio Studio WIT (formerly part of Production I.G) and having the same raising star Tetsurou Araki as the director..

Like in the Titans in Kabaneri there’s the same background team from thai-Japanese company Bihou Inc. Art director Yoshihara Shunichiro, who is one of the best and promising art directors of his generation. There also are his trusted co-workers Director of Photography Yamada Kazuhiro who has worked with him many times and art designer Aoki Kaoru (Titans, Jojo, Evol). What a way to start the series. This will definitely prove to be one of the best background art series of the season.

Some nice 3D and digital backgrounds in the Psycho Pass movie. BG-team wasn’t exceptionally good or notable and the whole movie had troubles with all visuals.

Shiotani Naoyoshi is a great director, but he certainly has troubles trying to keep up schedules and animation quality in his longer works. Especially Psycho Pass franchise has always had production troubles. Season 1 had episodes 18-19 which were aired even though they were only partly completed (for which he apoligized in his twitter) and the whole season 2 which looked awful.

Some backgrounds from Non non Biyori: Repeat. The second season wasn’t a let down at all. If anything the quality of the backgrounds was even higher than in the previous season. I really like how they added the “acryl paint”-feeling to otherwise sharp digital colors and outlines. Backgrounds in Non non Biyori play a vital part in immersing the viewer to the idyll life in the countryside.

As much as I’d love to highlight how good backgrounds Akagami has, I can’t. Studio Easter send their “newbie” department to do the job and the outcome is nothing extraordinary. Some beautiful lens flare effects on the skies and that’s about it. Good thing that Bones has good photography department.

But atleast we can enjoy good storyboarding and heartwarming romances.

Albeit I might prefer paperdrawn background art, I can’t deny that Ufotables instaff background staff knows how to take advantage of todays digital effects and tools. You don’t see this kind of lighting and shading in your everyday anime. Ufotable shows that just by paying attention to the special effects in the sky you can make the whole world seem very different.

Well to be honest the beautiful special effects should be credited to the photograph department. But since they have to co-operate with the BG-team I wouldn’t want to draw a too big distinction between background art and special effect art, atleast in the works of ufotable.

Random background pictures from Shinkai. The first one is a poster picture of his new movie which will air in Japan later this year. Kimi no na wa seems very promising.

Since 5cm per second he has had a better understanding of importance of the photography department (job in charge final editing and combining of pictures as well in charge of the special effects and light&shadow). He can make any background look awesome.

Makoto Shinkai’s movie Kotonoha no Niwa - the Garden of Words is mindblowingly beautiful. The level of detail is superb. Shinkai has a deep undestanding how to use shadows as well as bright lights. He knows how to make even an ordinary scene look extraordinary. Even the most basic things like sitting on a bench can be breathtaking when you watch Shinkai’s movie.

I rewatched Shinkai’s works this week and Hoshi wo Ou Kodomos visual beauty struck me once again. It is a shame that this movie is so underrated because of the enormous expectations it had. Sometimes a great design and background doesn’t need anything except simplicity - art design can be wabi if I may say so, but I must admit that I prefer complex and beautiful designs such as these over simple and humble esthetics of wabi.
