kotaro lives alone (2022) tells the story of a neglected 4 year old who talks like a feudal knight and wears a t-shirt with the word god written on it, his (1) tired newparental figure neighbour who experienced his first real emotion when the kid moved in next door but would rather just walk him everywhere than express how much he means to him, his (1) other himbo neighbour who only wears a purple leopard suit + several stray cats whose birthdays they celebrate AND it tells a very complex and sad story about how cruel parents can be? one minute you’re melting over how adorable the kid is and the next second your blood is frozen when bits of his past are revealed. and yet this show was healing. the kid is only four and after having gone through hell he finally has found a family of strange lonely people that takes care of him. even the cashiers, the teachers and the newspaper delivery guy care about him. this show deals with some triggering child trauma and neglect stuff, canon found family, a sweet himbo, a tired artist who saw the kid and unconsciously decided to adopt him after like, what, ten seconds? and an adorable child that deserves the entire world and thinks he’s the guardian of all his adult friends. he carries a toy sword around and collects cool rocks. he physically sparkles when he’s happy. this anime is an ode to found families and how kindness and love are something you don’t need to fight for. if you can stomach heavy topics and want to melt and cry at the same time, watch kotaro lives alone (2022)
