Here’s our collaboration with Origin of Everythingand12tone on the history of God Save the Queen and My Country Tis of Thee, what makes music sound anthemic, and what happens when you translate a song. Give it a look and check out their channels, too! ^_^

Wake up, Romanians!

The first (two) words of European anthems. I’m so proud to be Romanian today. Best two words possible. (Although I do like Finland and Iceland: Oh!)

Here is the Anthem. At 5:32 is where most countries are mentioned.

USA: Referred to as Washingtons land who “remembered the chains that detained her too” in reference to the American War of Indepedence. President Thomas Jefferson expressed his support to the Greek War of Indepedence and many Americans volunteered to fight in Greece.

Spain: Referred to as the Spaniard Lion that greeted the revolution from its castle. Many Spanish scholars at the time voiced their support for the Greek cause.

Italy: Referred to as Italian carcasses who are being eaten by the Austrian eagle. Italy is portrayed as a victim of foreing opression much like the Greeks saw themselves at the time.

United Kingdom: Referred to as “Englands furious beast” who’s growling wrath is heard at the corners of Russia. Described as being startled by the events and keeping an eye at the Aegean Sea. Being the worlds greatest naval power at the time and in control of the Ionian islands, the seafaring Greeks constantly tried to procure British support.

Russia: Simply mentioned in reference to the UK as explained above.

Austria: Referred to as the Eagle who feeds on Italian corpses and who has cursed the Greek revolution. Also described as a nasty foe who squawks. The Austrians were seen negatively by the Greeks at that time due to their condemnation of the revolt and vocal support to the Ottomans. The Austrians also arrested the famous Greek revolutionary and writer Rigas Feraios and later extradited him to the Ottomans who then executed him.

Turkey: Meaning the Ottoman Empire, it is implied throughout the anthem as the oppressor and main adversary of the Greeks.
