The Spring/Summer 2014 collection from Anthony Vaccarello’s eponymous label displayed the Belgian designer’s body conscious designs that were not afraid to show a little, or a lot of skin. A color palette of mostly black with pops of white or red revealed dresses and skirts in slinky silhouettes. The designs were embellished with large and round silver gems which either accented cut-away swimsuits or completely decorated skirts with futuristic, V-shaped hemlines. Despite all the show of skin, there were some more covered-up elements like cropped jackets in leather and slouchy trousers.
Saint Laurent has a new designer, and people are not happy.
Hedi Slimane, who was the creative director at Saint Laurent for years, announced last year that he was moving on from Saint Laurent. People wondered who would replace someone so big in the fashion scene, and Anthony Vaccarello took that honored spot. People were not happy- to say the very least. Previously, he was the creative director at Versus Versace, and people felt like his vision would not translate with Saint Laurent designs. These people were right and wrong. The top photo comes from a 2015 fashion show, when Hedi was still creative director, and the bottom photo is a 2017 fashion show, with Anthony being creative director. Saint Laurent has always been provocative, but Anthony took it on a whole other level. He still kept the edgy vibe of what Saint Laurent is known for, but he definitely made it more scandalous, and people view this new collection as “trashy.” Let’s give him more of a chance to prove himself, but this first collection isn’t giving us too much hope.
