Front cover of L’Exposition de Paris, 1900, showing (in the lower half) the Palace of Electricity and the Water Castle. A detailed account of the World’s Fair held in Paris in April to November 1900, the book also includes an overview of the previous international expositions held in Europe and the United States, starting with London’s Great Exhibition in London of 1851.

Sound film (shown on a huge screen, 21 by 16 metres in size), moving sidewalks (at three different speeds), x-ray machines, wireless telegraphy, and the diesel engine were among the new technologies being demonstrated at the Exposition. Art and architecture contributions included the Grand Palais and the Petit Palais; Pont Alexandre III, still the city’s most ornate bridge; the Gare d’Orsay, the world’s first electrified urban railway terminus (now an art museum); and a major focus on Art Nouveau. Parisian events that coincided included the opening of the city’s first metro line, between Porte Vincennes and Porte Maillot, and the second Olympic Games of the modern era. And the Eiffel Tower received a coat of bright yellow paint for the first and only time in its history!

I can finally share this secret painting I’ve been working on slowly over the past few weeks! Happy very belated birthday to my good friend and artist, Sam Hogg! Sam has always been there for me with constant encouragement and has done such beautiful art of my own neglected chars. I finally got to paint her characters, for once!

I’m appreciative of Sam’s characters thoroughly kidnapping the muse, as it’s been so wonderful to slow down and enjoy the process instead of rushing from one project milestone to the next! It’s also been invigorating to explore something stylistically different from what I’ve been doing lately, especially as this feels like my best painting in a long while.

“The Pirate’s Kiss” features Eidy & Kalam from Sam’s story, The Whaler Girl, a dangerous pair to others and to one another. I’m looking forward to seeing Sam explore more of their tumultuous relationship in her stories!

Inspired by Klimt’s The Kiss, which always struck me as being about a woman swept up in a dangerous romance, which was the perfect root inspiration for these characters.

This was also quite the experiment done solely in Procreate! It’s been exciting to finally achieve a painterly look in this app after some struggling to get used to how the app operates.

finally got into Critical Role and would you look at that I’m in love with the Fae being, who would have guessed. This started off as just a doodle to draw Fearne with Angel’s trumpets in her hair, but it became Art Nouveau

close up under the cut

[ID: A digital drawing of Fearne Calloway from season 3 of Critical Role, a dnd podcast. Fearne is a fawn, with pale freckled skin, pale green hair, and goat esk horns, eyes, nose and ears. She stands in profile, with the yellow flower, angel trumpets, in her hair, which is half pulled up to a loose updo, half flowing down her back. She is drawn similarly to the Art Nouveau style, and has a gold disk surrounded by stylized fire balls as the background. Also a part of the background are flowers drawn in gold. End ID]
