May 2021 - Garden update!!

This year we started our balcony garden a bit later than usual. We decided to buy seedlings from local farmers instead of growing our own from seed. We didn’t really have time to prepare during the winter, so it was easier this way.

Thankfully some of our plants from last year survived the winter outside, so we didn’t need to buy new seedlings everywhere.

Plants that survived winter on our balcony (we had snow and minus 10 degrees sometimes, we are in the temperate zone):

  • Parsley
  • Arugula
  • Strawberries
  • Mint
  • Lemongrass
  • Chives
  • Thyme

Seedlings we brought from local farmers:

  • 4 kinds of different tomatoes (9 seedlings in total, we are pretty much hooked on tomatoes)
  • Yellow Hungarian paprikas
  • Chinese lantern plant/Jew’s cherry
  • Patty Pan Squash
  • Red Basil
  • Celery

Seeds we planted this year:

  • Second round arugula
  • Spinach
  • Sugar Peas (great snack during summer)

Now everything is small, but I’m already super excited about how the little balcony garden will turn out this year! We still have a lot of empty space though, so I’m pretty sure we are going to plant some more stuff in the future!

Garden update nr. 1

My plants just started grow like crazy last month! Here is a quick update on my parsley and strawberry. The strawberry got two flowers and my parsley just got HUGE. I’m planning to cook an asparagus and parsley soup to use at least some part of it.  I grew the parsley from seeds (I planted it back in March or end of February). The strawberries sprouts were store brought.

Today I learned something pretty disturbing about my zucchinis. There are male and female zucchini flowers. The ones which I have here on my plant, supposed to be male ones. They are on a stem and won’t have any zucchinis. Later on the females will show up, they supposed to be closer to the plant’s center… The most disturbing thing is that if the females will turn up I have to probably pollinate them by myself since in the middle of the city there aren’t any bees around on my balcony…

The @westcoastseeds #sunflowers are starting to get taller, along with the #MorningGlory seeds that somehow smuggled themselves into the pot with the sunflowers. I swear I didn’t plant morning glories. Not in this container, at least.
