Hey Bay Area! What are you doing for the most important holiday of the year? No, not my birthday, silly! I mean Earth Day! Why not head on over to Cole Valley and try this beautiful vegan burger at Earthie’s Drive Thru’s “There’s a Party in Our Plants” popup!

Info:

On April 22nd, we’re introducing San Francisco to the best burger on Earth, made out of one simple ingredient: plants. But don’t let that word fool you – this isn’t your typical veggie burger. We’ve created something so satisfying, you’ll have a hard time believing it’s better for you and for the planet. Plus, we’re planting a tree for every burger we make.

Sunday, April 22nd, 2018, 5pm-8pm
205 Frederick Street, SF 94117

You can order fries and homemade sodas with your burger too. There won’t be tickets or anything but I’m told they’ll likely sell out so try to get there early! If you sign up on their site, you’ll get an email with a $1 off coupon. HUZZAH!

Congratulations to Academy of Art University alumna Yuqing “Max” Luo for debuting her first solo show at the Cannery Galleries! A recent MFA graduate from the School of Fine Art-Sculpture, Luo displayed her graduate thesis titled, “Border Lands.”

“I chose to come to Academy of Art University because its emphasis is on practical skills and its facilities are top-notch, and the faculty are very supportive,” Luo said.

As a graduate student, Luo valued the critiques from Academy faculty. By communicating closely with her instructors, she was able to refine her methods and apply it her work.

“The critique really helped me because I could talk about the creative process over and over,” she said. “Teachers helped me come up with conclusions.”

Luo found inspiration from her experience moving from one city to another. Growing up in central China, Luo moved to another city where people spoke a different language. The experience influenced the way she started to observe peoples’ behavior and how cultures influence individual perceptions of the world.

“One thing I learned is it is really important to try new things because you never know how much you can accomplish,” she said.

Learn more about what youcan accomplish by visiting us as www.academyart.edu. If you’re interested in learning about how you can get involved with the School of Fine Art and its programs, please visit us here.

I met Yuri on the pilgrimage to Tule Lake internment camp immediately following the 9-11 attacks in NYC. The rise in overt racism against anyone who appeared to be Arab or Muslim made the pilgrimage especially powerful—it seemed as if history was on the verge of repeating. Tule Lake was the camp where Japanese American dissenters (“no-no boys”) were sent, and the dissent continued from inside, leading to the construction of a jail inside the camp. I sometimes accompanied Yuri as she used her wheelchair to visit different parts of the camp’s ruins, and she was always very kind, but also very fierce in her political commitments and support of young people taking up the fight for true freedom and justice. She was the first Asian American activist elder I met in the Bay Area, and thanks to her, I feel connected to an important lineage, one that continues to inspire me today—a touchstone I come back to often. I will always be grateful.

everydaygothic:

The air is damp with the sea and fog caught between the hills. When you descended beneath the treetops, down to the forest floor, time stopped and everything went still. The only sounds are the distant echoing of water drops falling from branches and the whispers from around you. Perhaps it is the old gods speaking, or new gods preparing to rise. You look up. You cannot see the tops of the trees, only that trunks that extend ever upward.

Today’s magical redwood forest post is a guest post from my sister/hiking partner. We recently hiked in Mount Tamalpais State Park in the San Francisco Bay Area. It had been too long since I was exploring the redwoods and I can’t wait to share more of the photos.
