After Liberace died in 1987, his ornate and lavishly designed mansion in Las Vegas was sold and later foreclosed and abandoned. During this time its marble floored rooms remained empty, the fireplaces were dusted in soot, the remains of fires from long talks and nights filled with emotions. Today, the mansion is no longer abandoned but a true to its idol masterpiece and event center. However, let us remember the days where we were as empty as its halls once were.

Subtle hospital glam. Ambulatory medical tests require you to ‘go about your ‘normal’ activities’ while undergoing the testing. This was my latest 24hr holter monitoring (ambulatory ECG). It happened to fall on my 10 year anniversary with my love.

This was taken as I was getting ready to go out for our date. Seeing these photos a week later, I look sad; even though that wasn’t my intention. On reflection I think I was sadder than my steel-braced consciousness was allowing me to perceive. A night or two later I had my very first enormous, sobbing, spluttering cry since the arterial dissection/stroke in 2013.

When I took these photos I intended to share them as a ‘looking glam and awesome, despite this ugly medical inconvenience’. I wanted to look peaceful. Divorced from that moment, instead, I look somber; almost funerary given my clothing.

Grieving is fucking hard. It’s even harder when it’s for yourself.

Reviving this place as a sort of visual diary (maybe?), probably also posting some works.

Recently got to watch ‘Midnight Mass’ by mastermind Mike Flanagan and fell in love with it. Brilliant through and through!

2021, from the Diary, taken during a drive with my mom.

“Then the moon wept” - by Hawthyn Nettlenest (but actually me)

A lil’ speedpaint I did of a scene from a current campaign. My character, Hawthyn, is a painter and of course I like to think about what he would paint, and uh, big moments that need to be processed?? Had to draw

We had a week-long festival called The Moondrop Festival leading up to, well, the moondrop :V We had been dealing with some cultists throughout the week, and then we arrived at the last day of the festival, preparing to see this beautiful phenomena.

But mere minutes before, a large group of cultists arrived with their leader and an owlbear skeleton for a surprise attack. We fought them off, but many guards and some civilians died in the battle. Then, a moment later the moondrop occurred. Hawthyn had travelled far to witness this event and to paint it, of course, but he would have never guessed the painting would be so somber.

It was just a quick paint, and I tried to think of a way to refine it so it felt like less of a doodle, but I couldn’t really figure it out, so this is just what it is, even if I feel it’s not that well balanced lol, I still really like the idea and it was a fun thing to do for my character~

“Sunbeam Melts The Hour” by RM Hubbert (with Marion Kenny & Hanna Tuulikki)

The official video by David Hand (http://www.alongbirdalley.co.uk), taken from the album Thirteen Lost & Found by RM Hubbert.

I am more in love with this video than with the actual song itself. Don’t get me wrong: this track is brilliant and distinct, but this video is just so amazing that it overshadows every other element. It was created by the very talented David Hand, who is a graphic designer and illustrator who uses his talent through various different mediums. Through this music video, he showed that he is not just an accomplished illustrator, but also a brilliant animator.

The simplicity to this video is what drew me to it. The colour palette, or lack thereof, helps support the delicate sound of RM Hubbert. The recognizable brand that David Hand has helped create for RM Hubbert is genius. His use of creatures of the abyss has helped create a mysterious and somber image for RM Hubbert - which really is a visual representation of RM Hubbert’s sound.

David Hand really knows how to translate sound into visual elements.

Now to RM Hubbert: what a wonderful, chilling sound. “Sunbeam Melts The Hour” is beautifully haunting. There are definitely elements of Bon Iver, Mumford And Sons, Iron And Wine and Lykke Li to this Scottish singer’s music.

Above everything, he is a guitarist. This is very clear when listening to any of his songs, as the guitar picking and strumming will give goosebumps to the best of us. The vocals to the music that he plays, composes and writes are done by guest artists.

What I love about RM Hubbert is the depth to his lyrics, which is brought to life by his command of the guitar: he writes about death, loss, friendship, mental illness and topics which often leave us lost for words - in a way that is captivating and spellbinding.

Some of my favourite tracks by RM Hubbert are “For Joe”, “Half Light” and “For Maria” - make sure you check them out.
