LIVE

Not posting my photo of Allison Saft’s A Far Wilder Magic for any particular challenge, I took this photo recently and I really like it, so I just thought I’d show it off here.

P.S. I’m still reading this and really enjoying it. Would recommend.

Have you read I Must Betray You? I haven’t yet but I want to read it soon. I usually love all books from Ruta Sepetys.

Day 16: Anti-Oppression

Just finished this beauty yesterday.

Being able to visit places without even closing your eyes and no true visual aid is the magic books alone can create.

Why you should read A Far Wilder Magic :

  • atmospheric and cottage-core, set in a small seaside town that leaves you longing to visit
  • Alternative 1920s
  • Definitely inspired by The Scorpio Races by Maggie Stiefvater. And while the writing styles are different, the vibes are the same.
  • Jewish coded MC who has to face discrimination and hate for her identity. Other religious and ethnic disparities.
  • Realizing and leaving abusive relationships, and all the complexities that go along with such a topic
  • Sunny/happy-go-lucky boy and grumpy/standoff-ish girl
  • the romance is lovely and the characters help themselves grow and evolve as people
  • old manor house
  • alchemy! and a hunt for a mythical creature that our two characters team up for!
  • this book is so soft it’s like hearing a piano playing from a distant room
  • but I’m appreciative of how it takes on and handles the more difficult and uncomfortable subjects

Thanks to @storytime-reviews for the group tag.

Bought:Devotionby Hannah Kent, and Beyond the end of the world(The other side of the sky #2) by Amie Kaufman and Meagan Spooner

Borrowed:Romantic outlaws: The extraordinary lives of Mary Wollstonecraft & Mary Shelley by Charlotte Gordon from the library. I originally wasn’t going to borrow anything, but I saw this one on the shelves and I just HAD to read it.

Gifted:The long way to a small, angry planet (Wayfarers #1) by Becky Chambers

Gave to someone else: I think it was The Lake House by Kate Morton

Started:The understudy by Julie Bennett, and A far wilder magic by Allison Saft

Finished:The secret of laughter: magical tales from classical Persia by Shusha Guppy

Gave 5 stars: A psalm for the wild-built (Monk and robot #1) by Becky Chambers

Gave 2 stars: I tend not to rate books that low, if I’m not enjoying a book I normally DNF it. The closest rating to 2 I gave was The winter duke by Claire Eliza Bartlett, which I read last year and rated 2.5. Not even really sure why I finished it in the end, I guess I didn’t want to let it beat me.

Didn’t finish: A universe of sufficient size by Miriam Sved (this had promising elements but I hated one of the POV characters), and Pemulwuy: the rainbow warrior by Eric Wilmott. I was quite sad to DNF that one because of its subject matter, but I was in a bad reading slump and needed to start afresh.

Anyone else who wants to do this and hasn’t, feel free to take this as your invitation!

I loved Georgia’s coming-of-age story, and her journey made me so emotional. I can’t even begin to describe how much Loveless made me reflect on my hopes, struggles, and fears. And I’m so glad it ends with Georgia coming to terms with her identity and even starting to joke about it.

And Alice Oseman always create the best friend groups! I wanted to hug Pip and Jason, and I worried about Rooney and wanted to hang out with Sunil. I liked how they bonded over Shakespeare and their love for acting.

Overall, I loved the emphasis on how platonic love should be as important as romantic love. Georgia’s putting her energy and effort into her friends and making grand gestures to show that she appreciates them made me so happy! Now I not only need more ace protagonists but also friendship-centered books ♡

The stunning, standalone prequel to the New York Times bestsellingThe Priory of the Orange Tree.
