When I started grad school last year there wasn’t a single hairy woodpecker on campus. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a pair showed up to breed that spring.

Those intrepid parents must have been successful, because I caught a year-old hairy this morning! He has a lovely mate and the two of them are currently on eggs.

RUFOUS-RUMPED FOLIAGE-GLEANER
(Philydor erythrocercum)

Stouffer, P.  Philydor erythrocercum Rufous-rumped Foliage-gleaner
Amazonas, Brazil

Ridiculous as it sounds, ‘rufous-rumped foliage-gleaner’ sums up this little bird perfectly. Like the other foliage-gleaners (of which there are over 30 species spanning across 6 genera), the rufous-rumped was named for its foraging behaviour which typically involves picking (gleaning) arthropods from plant material. There are several foliage-gleaners with equally glorious vernaculars, such as the henna-hooded and slaty-winged foliage-gleaners, but the rufous-rumped has a red bottom. So there.
