When I started grad school last year there wasn’t a single hairy woodpecker on campus. Then, seemingly out of nowhere, a pair showed up to breed that spring.

Those intrepid parents must have been successful, because I caught a year-old hairy this morning! He has a lovely mate and the two of them are currently on eggs.

Sparkling Violetear (Colibri corruscans)

Unfortunately, the local hummingbirds were all molting on this visit to the Peruvian cloud forest. That means it’s hard to capture the massive “ear tufts” of violetear hummingbirds like this guy.

Corruscans are some of the largest hummingbirds in the mid-elevation Andes, second only to sicklebills. They flap more like songbirds some of the time, and are fierce defenders of their flower patches.

I am thrilled to introduce Madagascar’s newest frog species, Rhombophryne ellae! This new diamond frog is presumed to be endemic to Montagne d’Ambre National Park in the far north of Madagascar. Its uniquely orange legs and large black hip markings set it apart from all other Rhombophryne species so far. I have the great pleasure of dedicating the new species to my partner, Dr Ella Z. Lattenkamp, in appreciation of her support of my work, and celebration of her recent PhD defence! You can read about the new species and get a link to the #OA paper published in Zoosystematics and Evolution on my blog at http://www.markscherz.com/archives/4598 (link in bio)

Located in the heart of the Los Rios District, the San Juan Capistrano Historical Society has been restoring and preserving historical structures. It is adjacent to the Capistrano Depot that actively takes you on the #train throughout #SoCal.

The National Trust for Preservation established the week long tradition of recognizing preservation practices during the Nixon administration. They now show how #ThisPlaceMatters with a toolkit for grassroots organization. We celebrate all the month of May. The trust created a list of 31 actions, one for each day, for you to get active in this movement. Visit https://savingplac.es/2VYOlr6 via @savingplaces.

Biologist Nicolas Laurent and his team go on an expedition to the Democratic Republic of Congo, to the remote village of Inkanamongo. The goal: find viruses in mammals to investigate how biodiversity loss affects the emergence of zoonotic diseases such as Ebola, Monkeypox, and those linked to Coronaviruses.

Production: Stijn Pardon and Nicolas Laurent, Royal Belgian Institute of Natural Sciences (@rbins)

Did you know Saskatchewan is home to several impact structures caused by meteorite impacts? One of the largest is Deep Bay located on the South Western tip of Reindeer Lake. The impact crater is over 13km in diameter, has a depth of 220m (the deepest water body in Saskatchewan!), and was formed approximately 99 million years ago
