Taking care of the Todoroki men..

Summary: The fiery men fall sick. How do they act? Do they give in to their s/o wanting to dote on them?

Warnings: None unless your unsettled by sickness. Gender neutral.

  • Stubborn, stubborn man.
  • Consistently runs himself into the ground in every aspect of his life. Hero work, training, family matters and upholding your relationship. Gives every ounce he has into everything he does.
  • Despite the many lectures he gives to people about caring for their health and well-being he often shirks his own. Believing he doesn’t deserve to take “breaks” for his own health.
  • So what happens when he’s hit with a villains quirk that leaves him bound to his bed while he’s coughing up a lung, can’t speak due to his inflamed throat and fever wrecking havoc on his immune system? He tries to go to work.
  • You’re awoken up from your dream filled sleep to the sound of something very large falling. Enji had collapsed from the bout of dizziness and vertigo that played a cruel trick on his feverish mind.
  • After trying to help him and persuade him back to bed he brushes you off, saying he’s fine, and goes to work. Not a hour later he’s stumbling through the door of your home, nearly collapsing again. This time he listens to you when you usher him to the bedroom and lay him down, hearing the quiet mutter of an apology as he finally gives in. Wonders never cease.
  • Now he’s learned his lesson and doesn’t give a fight when you start worrying about him and start coaxing him to take medicine. Out of all of them he’s the one to love the attention most, soaking it up like a sponge while he tries to keep a disgruntled expression. He’d give you far too much pleasure in yourself if you knew you were making him feel all mushy and soft on the inside so he puts on an ever grumpier facade, for now.
  • The phrase “grin and bear it” made flesh.
  • The worst of them all. Living in a shithole, eating the bare minimum, smoking and nearly ripping apart by the seams makes his health plummet in the cold and flu seasons. He’s also the worst because whatever reservations about being “clingy”, “needy”, and “affectionate” go out the window. In layman’s terms Touya turns into a massive baby.
  • From the moment he wakes up he’s complaining about every little thing. He’s too hot, the blanket is too scratchy, his staples hurt, the room is too bright so on and so forth.
  • At least in this state he says “please” and “thank you” during his rants about his needs. You can’t very well leave him to defend himself so you oblige. Finding simple, easy food to settle his stomach, crank up the air conditioner, find him a better blanket and as gross as it is, clean the discharge out of his staples. All the while he’s babbling in a state of delusional happiness. Whatever feelings he keeps bottled up spilling over as his turquoise eyes watch your every move. It’s quite sweet and a nice payment for taking care of the arsonist.
  • When everything is said and done he says the cure-all for his sickness: cuddles. Of all the things.
  • Before you can even retort saying you would also get sick and have to deal with his further complaining he releases all the stored energy he’s built up since waking up and pulls you underneath the covers, hearing none of your own complaints as he wraps you up with him.
  • He’s rather smug with himself when you concede and give him his final request. He’s an absolute man-child through and through and you both know it.
  • When he recovers he’ll threaten to burn you to ash if you mention it, much less tease him about his sudden change in behavior. Of course he doesn’t mean it. If he did then who would take care of him when he gets sick again?
  • That’s right, no one. So he keeps you around, leeching off the possibility of getting you to wear a nurse costume next time.
  • The most cooperative of the three.
  • He does fall sick quite often, never anything serious, but enough to keep him bedbound for a time due to the constant use of his quirks. Whenever he uses his cold side heavily he runs the risk of catching the flu and a stomach bug for his hot side.
  • Whenever he does he has no reservations about getting into bed and resting. After his mother was placed in the psychiatric hospital getting chicken noodle soup, a compress to his forehead and care after getting sick was out of the question so he always tried to sleep it off.
  • So he’s quite giddy inside when he sees you rush into the room with a piping hot bowl of soup, bread and medicine.
  • When he’s awake and being tended to he monitors your own health to ensure you don’t fall sick either, feeling terrible when he notices you slowly but surely getting sick as well.
  • Shoto only needs a day or two of rest and being tended to recover from the mild fever and chills and then its his turn to care for you. He’s far, far less experienced in the matter and ends up researching on the internet how to care for you.
  • There’s many things he has to learn still and knowing how to nurse a sick person back to health is one of them. He’s watched you everytime and generally tries to follow your lead and when you can, through a scratchy throat, coughs and sniffles guide him through the steps.
  • After he’s put a cold pack on your forehead and you’ve eaten a box of instant noodles he slides back into bed with you. Letting you use either side of his body to regulate your temperature as a silent apology.

I still find it amazing that Renora has been considered to be a canon couple since very nearly the start of RWBY regardless of the fact that they didn’t explicitly hold hands until the very end of Volume 4 and didn’t kiss until Voi 7 (and that kiss had a LOT of baggage attached)

But Blake & Yang? Despite the same level (or more) of emotional buildup weren’t really considered by certain people to be romantically linked until Vol 6 where it basically became undeniable and then those same people screeched “no buildup”.

Look, I know I rant about this point a lot but but it’s very frustrating when I see the ease at which opposite gender couples are accepted but same gender ones require a mountain more of evidence and even then most of it is ignored because the interactions between two women are simply assumed to be platonic despite being obviously romantic in nature.

This kind of thing isn’t just in romance and shipping though. Deku from MHA wants to be a hero that saves everyone and he’s called ‘idealistic’, Ruby wants to be basically the same thing and she’s called ‘childish’. Captain America fights against a corrupt government entity and it’s praised as one of the best MCU stories of all time, RWBY does the same thing and suddenly it’sbad writing.

It’s not really a surprise anymore that RWDE has double standards about everything.

Frankly, Ruby has far more common sense then Deku. She actually started training to be a huntress long before her crossing paths with Ozpin, while Dekus entire plan before All Might was ‘apply to UA without training or consideration beforehand.’

She also wouldn’t respond to being told further arm injuries would leave her crippled with ‘Hey, I’ve got legs I can break instead!’

I love the idiot, but he’s not that smart.

Honestly that’s a weird trope that’s always bugged me. Protagonist wants to be thing all his life, but never actually studies or trains for said thing? Yeah, I love Akko and Deku as much as any fan, but you don’t get your dream job as a Hero/Witch/Hunter by sitting around and wishing reallyhard.

(Funnily enough, even RWBY did this trope with Jaune, although more as a subversion than anything.)

But yeah, if Ruby were in Deku’s shoes she wouldn’t even need One for All. All Might would have popped out of that sewer grate to see a fifteen-year old girl beating the shit out of the slime dude.

In the case of Izuku, there’s a bit more nuance to that aspect, given that one of the things that is made apparent in the beginning with Izuku is that he never really received any proper support system until All Might validated his desire to be a hero.

His own biology told him that he couldn’t get superpowers to be a hero, his own mother apologizing out of well-intended love for failing him not having a Quirk but unintentionally making it clear that she didn’t have any faith in him to be hero, his friend turning into a bully because Izuku couldn’t be a hero, and society informed all of the above by being biased towards the idea that you only have value if you have a Quirk, and the repercussions of that kind of mentality permeates throughout the society that My Hero Academia shows. Hell, even All Might has internalized the Quirk-biased prejudices to some extent, no doubt due to him also not being able to be who he is without One For All, even if it’s ultimately his heart, courage, and desire to protect that elevates him above being just a hero and being a true Symbol of Peace (even if that came with numerous consequences and flaws in hindsight).

Anyways, back to Izuku, it’s not that surprising that, with such a terrible support system that Izuku wouldn’t have really been able to put in the effort needed to become a hero in spite of what society said. If one can’t push through sheer willpower, then a strong support system is also needed to help them push through and grow, something that Izuku initially lacked in many aspects.

It’s hard to motivate oneself when the world seems to be stacked against you, when everyone who should be there to support you fails to do so, and even harder to do so when you have subconsciously ingrained the belief that you are worthless without this specific trait that society expects from you. It’s no wonder that Izuku leans so much into a Hero-analyzing fanboy sort of fantasy in the beginning; because within the context of his starting point and his place in such a biased society, a fantasy where he can only have wishful thoughts is likely the most he was capable of doing, and the most society would ever allow him to have if he hadn’t gotten One For All.

Everything else you said still stands however. This ended up being much more of a tangent than I intended.

Recovery Girl: You need to stop getting yourself injured. You’re absolutely reckless.

Midoriya: Kaminari is in here just as often as I am! Why don’t you lecture him?!

Recovery Girl: Because unlike you, Kaminari doesn’t just visit me when he needs me to heal him.

Midoriya:Eh? What else does he come here for, tea?

Kaminari, barging through the door with a tray of tea: Hey, RG! Sorry I’m late- got caught up with wrangling Bakugou again.

Midoriya:EEEHHH?!

(Y/N)

It was dismissal time. Most of the students go to either go to their dorms or go out with their friends, but here I am.

The peaceful library of UA.

I love reading books and all. I love the scent of old and new books and I’m more comfortable reading by pages than scrolling on my phone. It has a very relaxing atmosphere, allowing me to calm myself after a hard training for us to become heroes in the near future.

I wasn’t alone. Beside me is Izuku, also reading for further research. Seriously, this guy is into a lot of research about quirks, heroes and the likes, but I don’t know why. He has his powerful one, and he could pursue on being a pro hero. Although, he still keeps on writing down information for additional knowledge. What a lovely nerd.

I finished the book, so I got up and started to find an interesting one to read next. I inspected the titles in the spine one by one, and there, I found it but it has no title, which made me wonder. The problem is, it is on the 2nd row from the top of the shelf, making it hard to reach for me. Yes, I’m short, but I think this is just normal for girls. Footsteps approached behind me as I stood on my tiptoes to reach the said book. A hand grabbed it with no effort and then gave it to me. It must be nice to be tall enough to reach these high-ass shelves.

“You could’ve just called me if you can’t reach it,“ Izuku chuckled.

"I don’t want to disturb you. You seemed to be busy jotting down some details for your hero notes.”

“Nope, if it’s you who called, it won’t bother me.”

I sighed and dusted the book in my hand. It was a hard bound cover, but it only has curly border designs and the title was scrapped off. I smiled. It feels like I’ve seen this book before.

“Hey, that looks familiar…” He muttered.

“It is, but I don’t remember what’s its title though.”

He pressed his fingers in his chin, thinking. “Yeah, that book is old, but we had read it at somewhere…”

I gasped, "Oh, right! I remember now!”

“It’s ‘The Day Before the World Ends’!” We chorused and laughed.

“I missed reading this book,” I said.

“Yeah, me too,” He replied. “I think it was last year when we found it?”

-izuku, a year ago -

Aizawa-sensei left the room as he finished his lesson and we waited for the next class. I sighed, having my brain squished for the topic, but I think I understood most of the lesson. My classmates shifted their seats beside their friends to chatter.

I looked around to search for my friends. Uraraka-san was talking to the girls, Iida-kun is outside to run an errand from a teacher, and Todoroki was sleeping on in desk.

I happened to pass behind Kirishima, “Hey guys! What are you talking about?”

“Nothing much, just about (L/N)-san.” Kaminari replied.

“(L/N)-san?” I sat beside them, glancing at the said girl, “Is there something wrong with her?”

“No, she’s perfectly okay but dude, how can she be so hot and cute at the same time! She’s got the wits too, she’s a whole package!” Kaminari said in adoration, “Apparently she grew up in another country and her accent sounds sexy~”

“And she’s popular too… even the classes from other departments look up to her.” The rednette sighed.

I looked at her. She was having a conversation with Uraraka and Yaoyorozu. I think she’s pretty too but, I just absentmindedly ran my mouth, "I think she’s average.”

“Really, Midoriya?” Both of them seemed to be very unconvinced.

I HAD THE WRONG WORDS. SHE’S DEFINITELY PRETTY, but as to not further embarrass myself, I continued.

“Y-Yeah, I think she looks f-feminine.”

"Midoriya has a poor taste in girls.” Kaminari teased.

“W-What? I-It’s not like that!” I stuttered.

They laughed, “Then, what do you think of Uraraka?”

“Well,” I fidgeted, not knowing the right thing to say,” S-She’s pretty normal too.”

They put their heads in their desks, “Why did we bother to ask…”

I chuckled nervously and scratched my hair, "I’m sorry if I don’t seem to be hitting the topic. I-I’m not really good with girls…”

“You think we are too? If I were good with girls, I probably won’t be single right now.” Kaminari laughed.

“Is that so… w-why are you guys talking about them? Do you happen to like Uraraka-san or (L/N)-san?

"Hey, we’re just discussing, t’s not like I have serious feelings for them!”

"I think… I like her.”

Kirishima and I stopped as we heard Kaminari. Lovestruck, he was looking directly at (L/N) when he muttered those words.

I asked, “You… like her, Kaminari?”

He was awakened from reality, "Huh? What? Did I said something?”

“Yeah. You said you like (L/N)-san.” Kirishima poked his arm.

“WHAT. I DIDN’T SAY SUCH A THING!”

“Yes you did, dumbass. Midoriya can testify.”

The blondie covered his face, “How embarrassing!”

"Kaminari, if you really like her, then why don’t you just tell her right away?” I asked without thinking.

“Midoriya, its not very easy to confess, you know.”

Upon imagining if I were in that situation, I blushed, “Oh, right.“

I reached the library right after the dismissal to finish my assignments and read some books about quirks. I know I have my own now, but it’s definitely an ace if I study more about heroes and the quirks, and later on, I’ll start my training.

I was picking a book when someone talked to me.

"Was that a manga?”

“H-Huh?”

I turned around and saw the slender figure of (L/N)-san.

“The one that you’ve been reading a while ago. Was that manga?”

“U-Uh… that was Hirokita’s.”

“Hirokita’s? What’s that?” She went confused.

“H-He’s the author of the book. Its The Origin of The Quirks and its Diversity.”

“Oh, I thought Horikita’s was the title. You must really like these kinds of books. Is it good?”

She was talking to me, I can’t believe it! I turned around a little so she can’t see me blushing.

“Yes. D-Do you read a lot of books? It doesn’t seem like it t-to be honest.”

“Yeah. I don’t read in the classroom but, I like fantasy, hero, and classic novels very much.”

W-We’re actually the same!

“T-Then, let’s read t-together!” I blurted out.

Her eyes seemed to sparkle, “Really?”

I nodded, “I recommend these…H-Here, that’s o-one of J.K Rowling’s novels. I-Its very awesome! So are F.S Fitzgerald novels on the lower section!”

"Thanks. I’ll definitely read these!” She said as she picked up the book I pointed to.

"B-But, can I ask a favor, Midoriya-kun?”

“Favor? What is it, (L/N)?”

“Can you teach me the recent lesson in Math and English? I don’t quite get it. Pretty please?”

My eyes averted to the side, “S-Sure! But you could’ve asked Iida-kun. I bet he got the lesson more than me!”

“I asked him first, but he said he has to attend his strict training regiment. I’m thankful you agreed, Midoriya-kun!”

I haven’t talked to (L/N)-san since I am nervous, but here I am, agreeing to teach her. I am praying to god so that nothing awkward can possibly happen.

After that chat, our meetings and conversations became more frequent. Of course, I was very flustered at first, but soon we became partners in a test against teachers, talked in the class, and stayed in the library a lot, before parting for our own quirk and technique training. We read and share ideas to each other. Before I even knew it, I realized that it was so much fun to be with her, that I’ll never be nervous anymore even if I got trapped in a room with her.

It’s been a long time since I spend time with someone with the same interests as me. I am glad to meet another friend.

Friend…

The second I knew, she was climbing on the shelf trying to reach a book at the top, standing on a chair.

“(L/N)-san! Be careful! You can lose balance and that part is dusty!”

“I’ll be alright-”

Her reply was cut off when she pulled the book from the shelf and a cloud of very fine dust appeared in front of her. The chair shook as she blew the dust off, but I held it and assisted her to get down.

“I told you its high and dusty! Y-You could’ve fallen!”

“Well, I didn’t, thanks to you.” She smiled.

I sighed in relief I was about to reply when I accidentally caught a sight of her skirt that I shouldn’t see. I internally screamed and quickly moved away, making a weird noise.

“Is there something wrong, Deku-kun!”

“I-IT’S NOTHING!!”

She ‘hmmed’, scanning the book in her hands.

“A-Anyway, what’s the book that you want to check out?” I continued, calming myself.

"I caught my attention. Look, it doesn’t have a title.” She pointed.

She gave me the book and I turned the pages to search for the title. “Oh, I’ve read this book in my middle school. It’s about the day before the end of the world.”

She put her fingers on her chin as she repeated the title, “How interesting yet terrifying to think of.”

"Yeah. Its genre is fantasy, although we know that it will eventually come but I hope it won’t be very soon. I’m still fascinated about how authors write these.”

“Me too. The author’s imagination must be amazing.” She agreed.

“What will you do if the world’s going to end tomorrow, (L/N)-san?” I asked.

“Hmm, if that’s the case, then I’ll spend time with all my loved ones and eat a lot of sweets all day.” She cheerfully replied.

“Sweets? I saw you eating a bunch these past days.”

“Then I’ll eat the ones that I had never tasted before! Or any cuisine I’ve never tried too! If the world’s going to end, at least let me leave peacefully with a full stomach.” We chuckled.

Our laughs ceased, and before we knew it, piles of books fell on where (L/N)-san pulled the said material off.

"Oops. I’m sorry…” She mumbled.

I sighed, “I guess we have to clean these or the librarian will scold us.”

“Yeah, sure.”

We picked up the books on the floor and dusted them as well. It’ll be a waste if we left them with their titles covered with these. We chattered as we work and soon enough, we were almost finished. I put the remaining books on their shelves.

“Uhm, Midoriya-kun…” She called.

“What is it? I turned to her direction.

"I was wondering… what you’d do if the world’s going to end tomorrow?”

I inhaled before I answered.

“I’d tell you that I like you.”

Her eyes widened when she heard my statement.

I faced the shelves, “Then I turn into the cosmic dust. The end.”

Silence engulfed the space for minutes. I didn’t dare to say another word, nor does she.

I MIGHT HAVE SAID THAT WITHOUT STUTTERING, BUT I’M PANICKING INTERNALLY. WHAT DO I DO? WHY THE HECK DID I SAY THAT, THAT WASN’T UNCALLED FOR. OH NO OH NO OH NO SHE’LL THINK I’M A WEIRDO AND AVOID ME. I AM INDEED ATTRACTED TO HER BUT I DON’T EVEN PLAN TO DO THIS IZUKU YOU IDIOT —

“Are you teasing me?” She asked again, interrupting my internal chaos.

“No.” I tried my best to sound calm.

Her hand clung to my arm in the middle of my panicking. I accidentally faced her, exposing my embarrassed self.

“W-Why are you blushing?” Asked (L/N).

“N-No I-I’m not!!” I defensed, covering my entire face.

Her lips formed a wide smile, “You’re lying! Its crimson red!”

I slowly took my hands off my face,

“I-Its crimson red…”

She leaned on the shelf, giggling, “I didn’t expect that but… I like you too. Very much.”

“M-Me too…”

-izuku, present -

*inwardly cringing*

I have never felt so embarrassed upon remembering a memory. It felt like it just happened yesterday. But, oh well. That turned out alright somehow.

“I have been meaning to reread this!” (Y/N) said, carefully turning the pages.

“Did you forget already?”

“You think I did? I just thought it would be fun to look back!” She playfully hit my arm, "Hey, Izuku.”

“Yes?” I replied.

“What will you do if the world’s going to end tomorrow this time?”

I smiled at her as I gave her my best answer.

“I’ll hug you and tell you I love you with all my heart for the last time, then we’ll turn into cosmic dust.”
