Tekken Thoughts: Is Bryan the most evil character in Tekken?

Even though he’s never been the main antagonist, I think it’s a pretty reasonable claim that Bryan Fury is in fact the most evil character in the series. Even more so than the Mishima’s and even more than the Devil in my opinion.

If we’re looking at character death tolls in the series, I would be surprised if Bryan wasn’t in the Top 3. He literally just goes around the world causing death and destruction. Even Kazuya and Heihachi have motivations for their actions no matter have cruel they are. Bryan literally slaughters the very Manji Party members that save his iife. Daman.

Bryan would literally be the last person I would want to be alone in a room with. I imagine the Mishima’s would spare my life if I was at least of use for them. With Bryan I wouldn’t last 5 seconds =/

There’s a lot to unpack here, and I think bringing this up means that we have to think about what it means to be evil.

If we’re talking about “evil people are likely to suddenly murder someone, personally”, then, OK, yeah, Bryan is probably the most evil in Tekken. Bryan *really* likes violence. And he’s got some personal vendettas, against the Manji clan, against Lei, against Dr. Abel…

But mostly, I think Bryan is evil in the way that a wild animal is evil. Which is to say, not that evil in the grand scheme of things. He likes violence. He likes hurting people. That’s certainly not moral by human standards, but his goals are mostly destructive rather than trying to control anyone. He can rack up a pretty good body count, but he’s just one guy murdering ninjas and throwing I-beams at helicopters. The scale at which he can cause evil things in the world is relatively small, and he probably doesn’t go around murdering children for no reason.

Contrastingly, consider Jin. Jin decided, having been asked by nobody, that he was going to start a world war, specifically for the purpose of waking up an ancient demon. This is the plot of Tekken 6. He chose to cause an extraordinary amount of suffering, world-wide, to bring back Azazel.

And killing that demon didn’t do anything. The world war continues on after Tekken 6, it didn’t get rid of Devil, and he can’t even control Devil like Kazuya can. In the process, he caused an enormous number of senseless tragedies – killing Miguel’s sister and The Tekken 7 Narrator’s Whole Family must have been commonplace.

Bryan’s just one hyper-violent cyborg man. He’s not an oligarch at the head of a megacorp with the power to start a world war and enough of a Messiah complex to not care about who gets hurt in the process. That’s not *that* evil.

File with my “Feng is basically moral and admirable” position.
