I simply cannot capture the massive amount of #EhrendorferiaChrysantha on this hillside. Photos don’t do it justice. AKA #GoldenEardrops, these plants rarely germinate except after wildfires. The #ValleyFire2020 really set these off! There weren’t this many last spring but certain hillsides have these massive stands of them. They’re easy to distinguish from the more highlighter-yellow of invasive mustards. Photo 3 features Encelia farinosa/incienso/brittlebush in the middle but that whole hill behind it is all eardrops.

Photos 4 & 5 are #AlliumHaematochiton (maybe A. marvinii but those may be the same species). 6 is that weird #SaniculaBipinnatifida / #PurpleSanicle again. 7 & 8 are a species of #Amsinkia / fiddleneck which I am not so good at telling apart.

#FritillariaBiflora / #ChocolateLily. I’m in love.

But there’s bad news. These grow in Wright’s Field, in which the County of San Diego inexplicably wants to build a sports complex/skate park. It’s absolutely baffling and would be an ecological disaster for this irreplaceable and rapidly disappearing grassland habitat. There are other beautiful uncommon and rare species of plants there and it’s important to birds and wildlife as well. There are vernal pools (a habitat that has almost been completely destroyed in California) nearby too. There’s no demand for such a park in Alpine and no infrastructure to support it!

#PaeoniaCalifornica / #CaliforniaPeony. One of the weirdest-looking plants we have out here. They look prehistoric somehow. Like they’re not quite what they’re meant to be yet. It’s not just that they don’t look like the cultivated or European ones and it’s not that they look wild, it’s like… the flower never matures beyond a bud and then the seed pod looks underformed too. They also bloom so early in the year that they always surprise me. They’re just wonderful.

I’m teaching a virtual nature journaling workshop @californiabotanicgarden! See the repost below for details. Before the pandemic hit, we were getting ready for a workshop in the garden. Unfortunately we can’t gather in person. Now I’m aiming to not only teach techniques for documenting nature, but to inspire people to get outside. With the help of many local community members and nature practitioners nearly 30+ native plants have returned home.

While introducing native plants to the local community, we also bring awareness of the historical context and implications. Genocide of both native people and the native ecology occurred on these lands and it is still important that we seek healing while those traumas have progressed generationally. Especially for us who have been taught a lie that our ancestors were “uncivilized”, we can find rootedness in our relations with the land. Western habits and lifestyles don’t respect the land. From city light pollution that confuses animals to paving roads that remove vital plants and trees, we are struggling to survive within a system whose ways are degrading to the planet, to animals, and to people.

We are here to build relations that will nurture continuous life. That means reimagining everything. That means realizing our own habits. But more importantly that means finding our own healing journey.
