Lily
Purity; peace; resurrection; royalty.
Sacred to all Virgin Goddesses, the Mother and Maid, the One and the Many.
The lily also represents the fertility of the Earth Goddess and later of the sky gods.
The lily in the West shares the symbolism of the lotus in the East.
A branch of lilies depicts virginity, also regeneration and immortality.
Alchemic: The white lily is the feminine principle
Christian: Purity; innocence; the Virgin Mary; its straight stalk is her godly mind, its pendant leaves her humility, its fragrance is divinity, its whiteness is purity; it is also a symbol of the Annunciation and of virgin saints, as chastity; it is the flower of Easter. Dante calls it the ‘lily of faith’. The lily among thorns depicts the Immaculate Conception as purity in the midst of sins of the world. In art a lily on one side and a sword on the other depict innocence and guilt.
Egyptian: Fruitfulness, but the lotus is more frequently used in Egyptian symbolism.
Graeco-Roman: Purity; it sprang from the milk of Hera and is an emblem of Hera/Juno and of Diana as chastity.
Hebrew: Trust in God; emblem of the tribe of Judah.
Islamic: Its symbolism can be taken by the hyacinth.
Minoan: Chief attribute of the goddess Britomartis.
Sumero-Semitic: Fruitfulness; fecundity.

But there’s bad news. These grow in Wright’s Field, in which the County of San Diego inexplicably wants to build a sports complex/skate park. It’s absolutely baffling and would be an ecological disaster for this irreplaceable and rapidly disappearing grassland habitat. There are other beautiful uncommon and rare species of plants there and it’s important to birds and wildlife as well. There are vernal pools (a habitat that has almost been completely destroyed in California) nearby too. There’s no demand for such a park in Alpine and no infrastructure to support it!

Dianella sandwicensis, known as Uki in native Hawaiian, is monocot member of the Asphodelaceaefamily which includes some well-known succulent genera such as HaworthiaandAloe.The actinomorphic flowers with anatomy in triplicate causes it to readily resemble flowers of the true lilies, leading to a common name of flax lilies for Dianellaplants in general.
The species is endemic to Hawaii and has a natural range spanning many of the islands where it can grow in many of their environments, whether dry or wet, or low to high altitude. It can flower at any time of year and produces vividly colored purple-blue fruit which were prized for incorporation into seed lei and used for dye. The leaves were further used, being braided into cord or used to thatch houses. In the modern day the plant is still used as a source of natural dye and for ornamental planting.

Unfortunately my Easter Monday has already had a few lily toxicity cases. I really wish lilies came with a warning label that they cause fatal toxicity in cats. Every part of the lily including the pollen causes renal failure in cats. There is no safe amount- any exposure at all requires an immediate vet visit.
I cannot stress enough how important it is to get your cat to the vet as soon as you know they’ve been exposed. If we can start treating your cat immediately sometimes we can reduce the severity of kidney disease. One of my cases today chewed a leaf on Saturday and the owners knew it was toxic, but thought since the cat vomited it could wait. Today the cat already has signs of kidney failure and it’s too late to help much.
Oddly, lilies only cause GI upset in dogs and not kidney disease. I still don’t advise anyone with pets ever have lilies in their home.
