Fish man tells his adopted bird daughter stories of the past.

(OC’s Castor, and Maela’i from the story I’ll never write)

I drew this the other day and have been debating for a long time whether or not to post it because I’m really not happy with it? But I’ll throw it here and call it a “concept image”. I’m just sick of looking at it, at this point!

This image, taken by Panagiotis Xipteras, shows the visual doublestarCastor, the second brightest star in the Gemini constellation. Even though it appears to be a binary star, Castor is in fact a complex multi-star system composed of six stars. The primary stars, Castor A and B, are both A-type main sequence stars, whereas the third star, Castor C, is a BY Draconis variable star. Each one of these stars is accompanied by a red dwarfflare star.

Confusion Oil

Used to confuse an adversary; a favorite of Courtcase Spells.

  • Black poppy seeds
  • Black pepper
  • Asafetida
  • Sulfur

Grind the above to a fine powder and add to a blend of castor and jojoba oils. For malevolent spells, substitute baby or mineral oi.

Apparently continuing the theme of lethal plants, today I am sharing Ricinus communis or ‘castor bean,’ which is a member of Euphorbiaceae,a family which is perhaps best known for its garden representatives of spotted spurge (a persistent weed) and fire sticks (Euphorbia tirucalli). In some regions members of this family have convergently evolved to resemble cacti, but Ricinuscould hardly be more different, to some resembling Cannabisplants. Native to the Mediterranean basin, Africa, and India, it is naturalized throughout the world and stands prominently in the Californian landscape.

While all of the spurge family possess irritating toxic sap, the castor bean is well-known for producing an exceedingly lethal compound found densely in its seeds – ricin. The compound is so harmful that the estimated lethal oral dose for most humans is around 80mg or less. Due to the high toxicity (it can also be absorbed through skin, eyes, and wounds) some regions have laws restricting the cultivation or harvesting of the plant. Such is its reputation that it even has broken into the entertainment industry, being used for example in Breaking Bad.

Despite the presence of such a hazardous compound in the fruit, the plant has great commercial value for another component composing around 50% of the seed: castor oil. This product has a huge variety of commercial applications and is even used in soaps, perfumes, and pharmaceuticals where it is largely safe since ricin is not fat-soluble. Until I spent time photographing this plant’s flowers, I didn’t really notice or appreciate its interesting floral anatomy or the vibrance of the female flowers.

I still think it’s a rather ugly plant.

MYTHOLOGY MEME: [1/7] heroes, prophets and saints

CASTOR AND POLLUX - In Greek and Roman mythology, the heroes Castor (Κάστωρ) and Pollux (Πολυδεύκης, known as Polydeuces to the Greeks) were twin brothers who appeared in several prominent myths. While accounts differ, the common legend has it that their mother Leda was admired by Zeus, who seduced or raped her in the guise of a swan. Their consummation, on the same night as Leda lay with her husband Tyndareus, resulted in two eggs from which hatched Castor and Pollux. The twins were worshiped as gods who helped shipwrecked sailors and who brought favorable winds for those who made sacrifices to them. The Romans considered Castor and Pollux the patron gods of horses and of the Roman social order of mounted knights, called equites.

I know I said not to expect any VC stuff any time soon but I’m working on the house sparrows I had in my freezer!

I also had a bunch of eggs that I’m trying to preserve which is… Not working the way I wanted it to. I was going to poke two holes in the eggs and use a needle & syringe to get the yolk out but. That didn’t work. So now the eggs either have huge holes in them or are broken into two pieces. I painted the insides last night with a coat of Elmer’s glue to hopefully reinforce them? And I’ll try to glue them back together. I hope I didn’t ruin all those eggs…

As for the birds they’re mostly plucked of feathers and soaking in water to loosen up the last of the feathers so I can pull them out. I’m gonna try to clean and keep all the feathers for art or w/e

When the feathers are taken care of I’m gonna skin and gut them to get as much flesh off and then try to preserve them via the Oxidation method. I’ve used that method on my mink, Bucky, my european starling, Apus and lots of feet so hopefully it works well for the house sparrows.

Also I named the sparrows Castor and Pollux after the figures from Greek & Roman mythology! I wanted them to have matching sort of names and in the mythology Castor and Pollux were said to have hatched from eggs so I thought it would be fitting for the birds, plus they’ll hopefully (if I don’t totally destroy them) have a nest full of eggs to watch over.
