Today, like most days, would be a fine day to to lull about a boat in the river Withywindle as Tom Bombadil does here, to consider the beauty and wonders of the natural world. Bombadil is a creation of J. R. R. Tolkien in 1934, who with his river-nymph wife, Goldberry, helps along young Frodo Baggins in The Fellowship of the Rings. He’s depicted here by illustrator Pauline Baynes (a fascinating person herself) on the cover of The Adventures of Tom Bombaldi, a collection of 16 poems (that hobbits love), published in 1963 and located in our special collections.
