The Disregard of Holism
- Original Watercolor Painting
Focusing on too many things at once is a problem I face personally, couple that with the need to take everything upon myself and low stress tolerance and you have a disaster waiting to happen. If you face the same problem as me, I’d highly suggest making a group of specialized people and solve small problems locally, whether that be growing food, hooking up satellites for free WiFi, setting up a Food Not Bombs chapter in your area, or even cooperation in local to state government. We all have our talents, honing yours can change a life, but it takes all of us to change the world in a significant way. To rebuild a structure, parts must be torn down, the more you tear down periodically, the better the structure is going to be, however it must be reinforced. You cannot expect a house to stand without a plan for a structure, we are the supports that make the wall, the roof, and the floor. The foundation is what we believe in, and what the foundation is, is hope. Hope for a future that can be, with action, collaboration, and resistance against the hierarchical, overbearing, and exploitative power structures that currently exist.
This has been my first post in a while, so I’ll see ya’ll again in probably a month to commemorate my first post on this site “A Beginner’s Guide to Solarpunk” which absolutely blew up my account, to be truthful I’m proud of how far we’ve all come with our small internet based movement reaching new heights and our voices getting louder in the ears of politicians and capitalists alike. We’re here to stay, don’t forget about it.
This has been @punkofsunshine, have a good one and stay safe.
Back when I was a little kid, plastic packaging wasn’t prevalant at all. Liquids and sauces were packaged in glass. Dry goods were packaged in cardboard. Tear-off lids were made of foil. On the edge of my estate were the recycling bins and my mother would trot us all over once a week so we could smash the brown and green and clear bottles into the correct bins. It was fantastic
But then it was revealed just how rapidly the forests were disappearing all over the world. It was a disaster, the world’s lungs were vanishing, and obviously it was all because of the individual consumers who were buying massive quantities of paper.
(whereas in actual fact most paper and cardboard came from farmed forests planted with rapidly-maturing trees that are harvested and replaced on the regular, not from virgin old-growth rainforest. We know these days why forests are being razed, but in the pre-internet era the only sources of information we had were newsprint and TV news headlines)
When companies started offering plastic versions of their packaging it was seen as a way the consumer could cut down on their paper waste, even though the plastic was flimsier and had to go into the bin as no one had worked out how to recycle it yet, but we were assured that’d be coming soon!
(and more insidiously, the glass packaged foods were now a few pence more expensive than the plastic packaged food. Was it really worth making a stand over tomato sauce? No, buy plastic, save the trees)
Nowadays it was obvious what happened: the companies realised they could save a couple pence by packaging their goods in moulded plastic rather than the traditional packages, so made a big fuss about the unsustainability of their old packaging in order to convince shoppers that they were making The Right Choice by moving over to plastic packaging.
Greenwashing has been happening for decades and it’s always been an advertising campaign.
At least 44 dead, 56 missing in Brazil downpours
Torrential rains in northeastern Brazil have left at least 44 people dead and dozens missing, the government said Sunday, as rescuers capitalised on a lull in downpours to search for survivors.
“We registered 44 dead, 56 missing, 25 injured, 3,957 without shelter and 533 displaced,” Minister of Regional Development Daniel Ferreira told a press conference in Recife, the capital of hard-hit northeastern Pernambuco state.
The disaster is the latest in a recent series of deadly landslides and floods triggered by extreme weather in Brazil.
The number of dead had mounted from 34 since Saturday, with at least 28 killed in landslides, as heavy rains caused rivers to overflow and torrents of mud swept away everything in their path.
Authorities warned that heavy rain was forecast to continue Sunday, but the storm subsided in the morning.
Experts say Brazil’s rainy season downpours are being augmented by La Nina – the cyclical cooling of the Pacific Ocean – and by climate change.
