I will pretty much instantly distrust a fellow leftist if they paint the enemy as being ugly (’all terfs have bad hair’, ‘all far-right bros are fat people with neck beards’, etc). Grave of the fireflies is not your “average” ghibli movie. It’s cruel, it’s heartbreaking, it tells you a clear anti war message. It tells you in the way most people react with horror: children dying due to starvation. Died orphans, homeless, unloved, without food and hopeless. Clearly saying “war affects the most vulnerable ones the most”, and makes you see an example of war and how it’s not the little hero story American and British movies may tell you
You will NEVER see it on your average ghibli analysis. “Ghibli is about the little joys of life and living a "simple” life i wish I was a ghibli character" no! It tells you about human life, how fragile we are, we do not deserve being invaded and we do not deserve the horrors of war, the Earth is being destroyed and we become less than human, it tells you your culture is rich and beautiful and remember where you are from…. people reducing ghibli to just pretty colors and romanticizing “simple life” make me rage
