I got A LOT of questions on yesterday’s post about how to respond to fat shaming incidents without trying to reassure someone that they are not fat. So I thought I would address all the comments in one post:

When trying to comfort someone who has been bullied for their weight, most people respond by trying to reassure the targeted person that “they’re not fat, they’re beautiful.” But that only perpetuates the assumption that being fat is not okay, an insult, snd a problem to be solved.

If we do this, then that bullied person will learn that their body can evade criticism if and only if it does not change at all.
That spells trouble.
The question for people trying to unlearn fatphobia then becomes “how do I respond to a friend/child/daughter being fat shamed without trying to reassure her that she is not fat?” Our task is to address the feelings of insults and personal affronts without buying into the assumption that fat is a problem.
My advice is to say to the targeted person: “Bodies are supposed to come in all different shapes and sizes, and it’s not okay that someone is trying to make you feel bad about that. You have done nothing wrong. You are only existing in your body.” This way, we can console distressed emotions, but still continue to fight for the day in which yelling “you’re fat!” incites the same connotations and emotional responses as yelling “you have size 7 feet! You have brown hair! You have green eyes! You have big earlobes!” etc. etc. etc.
Let’s change the way that we respond to fat bullying by putting the onus back on the perpetrator and reinforce the notion that the targeted person does not need to change a thing about themselves.

Reposted from @thefatphobiaslayer I beg you, for the love of all that is sacred, please stop correcting fat people when they call themselves fat! Fat is a neutral descriptor, just like “tall” or “blonde.” Imagine if you called yourself blonde and your best friend said “don’t say that about yourself. You’re not blonde, you’re beautiful.” You would become VERY insecure of your hair color. Last night I went to THE BEST SHOW I have ever been to! @bodyposipanda is my hero ❤️I haven’t cried meeting Evanescence or Jennifer Morrison but standing in front of Megan Crabbe holding her book that literally changed my life I got incredibly emotional explaining why it meant so much to me. I’ve felt as if Megan has been there holding my hand over the past few months, pulling me out of my own self-hate and low self esteem! Megan said I have done so well and pulled me into THE most comforting hug, it felt like she wasn’t going to let go - she is the kindest human!! I am SO grateful to her ❤️ The show itself was full of SPARKLES and FUN and DANCING (THE OPENING SONG WAS MEGAN’S OWN VERSION OF HOW FAR I’LL GO FROM MOANA WITH THE LYRICS CHANGED TO DISCUSS THE HISTORY OF DIET CULTURE, I WAS SO EXCITED I NEARLY JUMPED OUT OF MY SKIN) as well as ANGER about diet culture, complete with an incredibly informed break down of the history of why we have disordered relationships with our body and food and the best bit - WHAT TO DO NEXT! Because together we can get ANGRY and say fuck you to diet culture and love our bodies ❤️ I promise to love my soft squishiness and treat it with kindness! (Thanks to Megan I now see my cellulite clusters as “constellations napped across my thighs” because I am goddamn magical!) Because our bodies ARE NOT THE PROBLEM - the way we have been taught to view them is! I am ENERGISED AND ANGRY AND READY TO FIGHT DIET CULTURE!
